In reference to Dan's movies without full subtitle tracks topic, I encountered the same issue watching some movies that were originally (Mexican) Spanish, Italian, and more. They were movies in both English and those languages, depending what portion of the movie, and the alternate languages weren't translated in any way to be able to understand, despite a significant portion of the movies (25% or so of the talking) being in those languages. That made me unable to enjoy the Italian one at all, despite seeming like it would be an interesting movie. With the Spanish one, I at least understood enough to not have a ruined experience, but still don't enjoy having to think so much with something that I do to relax (watching movies). I never took foreign language classes, but got a reasonable bit of (Mexican) Spanish language learning done from spending a while with some temporary foreign workers and more. I also enjoy watching some Japanese anime (preferably with subs for not cutting out the Japanese references and culture, though sometimes dubs are fine too).
