End of 2023 Telegrams for Dawid, Tom, and Dan!

That's it folks - 2023 will end in less than 2 weeks!  As always, we will be recording a couple episodes ahead of time to be released over the break, with some fun surprises, and Dawid Does Tech Stuff will be joining us yet again for one of those episodes!

As a reminder, here are the major stories from 2023:

Here are Product Releases we are excited about for 2024:

Generally speaking, we are planning to take the comments/questions below, and then organize them as we see fit into the episodes we feel they would best fit in.  The Dawid Episode will generally focus on discussing 2023, and the Dan Episode will generally focus on what we are expecting out 2024 releases.  However, we will likely do a bit of both based on how the questions are asked towards each guest.  Feel free to address no one if you don't care who answers the question, address Dan if you want Dan, or address Dawid and Tom directly if you want us to specifically answer whatever your submission is.

You have ~36 hours to submit below!  Be thoughtful, as concise as possible, and use good grammar to be considered.

Thanks for all the content throughout the year Tom and team! My question is about upcoming AMD server products. As leaked we are expecting zen6 Venice to feature different chiplets. During Lisa Su's last presentation she was talking about opening up infinity fabric, and we know they are part of the UCIe (open chiplet interconnect) consortium. Do you think we will see products with customer's chiplets integrated by Venice? Or only after that? Or maybe even by Zen5 for certain customers? Thanks for all the hard work and happy holidays!

Hey, guys! What sort of performance bump are you expecting in the low end and in laptop from Blackwell? Will the 5060 be a 4070ti in raster, and maybe even the laptop version around that level of performance as well? Any chance of an actual 5050 launch?

Jordan Simkovic

I'm not sure if this has been answered before but is there a reason why amd won't make their own console like apu for destup? They already make them for console surely, they can learn a thing or two from both sony and microsoft to make something similar. i Know strix and all those new apu's are coming out but nothing better than a ps5 is odd to my uniformed brain.

Hey Tom and Dan, what are you most excited for in the consumer market of desktop here in 2024?

Sprutnik

If intel was to sell its fabs who would but them?

Sad XTX 999

As an "unbiased" gamepass owner even though Microsoft hands it out to me for free, I must say I'm excited for the future of ABK on gamepass. Revive prototype, guitar hero, and all the dormant IP's shoved away in favor of yearly COD. Put them all on game pass as exclusives for all I care. Unbiased perspective of course. I am very curious to see if Microsoft can once again fail to realize what they have and squander it.

Sad XTX 999

With the insomnia hack being just as big as the Microsoft hack, honestly worse because of all the leaked private data. what are your thoughts on PlayStation believing that their strategies are already dated and behind the competition? I'm an avid PS first party enjoyer. But even I'm getting tired of what seems to be the same game being made by different studios at this point. At least I know they realize that they have to evolve the formula if they perceive themselves to be behind in some way, and yes, I understand at least Sony is releasing quality games unlike Microsoft. But it seems that the COD nest egg potentially being altered in some way in three short years has them spooked.

Any reports on Blackwell and what its main focus is? I believe it was mentioned that they're going all in with something better than DLSS 3.5. Has lovelace's failure in some parts shifted nvidias pricing strategy for blackwell or can we expect to see a 5080 for $1400.

Sad XTX 999

What was your favorite product launch this year, along with your most hated.

Sad XTX 999

Curious to see if you know when 4090's will return and be in stock. When they do return will they be 2500-3000 USD like they are now?

Sad XTX 999

Hi Tom, earlier in the year you would often talk about Nvidia's huge stockpile of unsold GPUs. Has the situation changed much at all recently?

Chris Rijk

The Steam Deck was released in Feb of last year, and only became freely available in Oct. Yet it feels like the crown was given to the Steam Deck only in 2023, after waves of Windows handhelds were released and some flaws were found with them. Finally modern 3D games on the go, not locked to some store like the Vita or 3DS/Switch. How much of this delay in on-the-go gaming outside of smart phones and "consoles" was due to AMD and Intel only recently having good enough APUs for this both from the performance and Perf/W. The decade before this seems "lost" and growth stunted looking back.

Nicholas Buckner

The AMD MI300X combined Infinity Cache from RDNA, and some apu features. Is the bifurcation of CDNA and RDNA architectures going to be re-merged in the coming years? Or is AMD going to further split gpu/apu development, similarly to how you hinted CPUs might get performance focused, area-focused and power-focused cores for beyond Zen CPUs.

Nicholas Buckner

Dawid has done some really great budget builds in the past, I'd love to hear his thoughts on phoenix for desktop (either mini PC or for a budget build).

How would you summarise Intel's year? To me, 2023 feels like one of Intel's worst years ever. Financially they've done badly and had to lay off many engineers and their new products have been poor. What I'm feeling for Intel right now is mostly pity, mitigated by it being largely self-inflicted. Let's hope that 2024 is better for them as it's not fun like this.

Chris Rijk

What performance does top Arrow Lake need to hit to over base Zen 5 to be a good product? Do you think it will be able to hit that performance?

Benjamin Cannon

People using their node before Intel gets anything out using the ndoe

Benjamin Cannon

It feels like AMD has basically "won" the DIY x86 market. What more do they need to do to win over OEMs and pre-builders?

Chris Rijk

Hello Dawid, Dan and Tom. GPU’s and CPU’s take up the majority of the conversation when discussing pc hardware for obvious reasons. However I’m curious what non cpu/gpu part or trend you are most excited about. It can be currently on the market or yet to be released.

Billy Mays

Howdy y'all, what's your favorite and least favorite pieces of tech news this year?

Xavbeat03

Hello Tom and Dan, how do you see Intel's Foundry Service going into 2024? Will sales figures of upcoming nodes such as "Intel 4" hinge upon the performance of Meteor Lake? In other words, if Meteor Lake flops, will it bring the Foundry Service down with it? Who is buying Intel silicon anyway?

kjm015

Could you see any of the future GPU products including dedicated hardware for asset streaming like the PS5? What form do you think this would take, FPGAs or ASICs? Would this be silcon space in the GPU Die? Or maybe a seperate chip on the GPU board?

Josh Audibert

What is your favourite MLID or DDTS video or podcast of 2023, and why is it Die Shrink 107?

KarbinCry

With TSMC first mentioning 1,4nm node that will approximately arrive around 2029 do you think that Intel can catch up to their nodes in that time?

QuickJumper

Hey Tom and Dawid in 2023 I think I realized how truly arrogant and clueless Pat Gelsinger is. AMD is in rearview mirror or meteor lake is our centrino moment may be some of the worst. To be clear I don't hate on Intel but I wholeheartedly dislike Pat's arrogant demeanor. What do you think are some of his funniest and most outrageous quotes and what would be in your opinion the right message he should send moving into 2024?

QuickJumper

2024 is looking like a big year for gaming hardware. What would it take for it to be one of the all time greats? And how many duds can happen without knocking it down to "just" being a great year?

Cleansweep

Hello Tom and Dawid, do you think it would even make sense for Intel to release a low power Meteor Lake chip on desktop to have the platform already out there for Arrow Lake, or would that be such a total marketing disaster it would do more harm than good? Do you think Framework will even bother making a Meteor Lake motherboard? I honestly hope not, looking at how bad it seems like it'd be.

3-Valdion Dreemur

In 2022, Nvidia launched a cut down 3060 8gb which I believe Dawid christened the “3060 scumbag edition” - for Tom and Dawid, what product qualifies as the most scummy/cash grab of 2023?

Crast

Hey Dawid, what's the most entertaining wonky tech product you've touched or looked at in 2023?

Cleansweep

Tom & Dawid, what are your thoughts on basically laptop stagnation for at least the first half of 2024. Sure Hawk point has a beefier ai engine, but that's not a major selling point for consumers. We have no new GPUs, Intel has a big old nothing burger and strix (which is exciting) is looking like a q3 launch so maybe back to school? To me, 2024 looks like a skip it entirely year.
