Ryan Shrout, Scott Herkelman, Jim Ryan Leave their Respective Companies (Die Shrink Telegrams)

Last week we saw Scott Herkelman leave AMD, Ryan Shrout leave Intel, and Jim Ryan retire from Sony - and we already feel like the next Broken Silicon will be too full to properly air our thoughts on all of these departures - so let's talk about it in a Die Shrink!

Questions and thoughts for this episode can include anything having to do with AMD, Intel, Sony, or any of the companies they compete with.  An eclectic roster of submissions will be welcomed for this one!  Just be respectful, use good grammar, and be as concise as possible to have your submission considered from below.

Moore's Law Is Dead

What do you think is the correct way to market FSR3?

qhfreddy

Is AMDs marketing set up to fail?

qhfreddy

Do you think AMD is building its FSR feature-set and marketing it based on the assumption that people will consider it to be "on par" with what Nvidia has? Do you think buyers will feel that way? How do you think the fact that most of FSR works identically on Nvidia hardware plays into that?

qhfreddy

Why are anti-lag+ and nvidia reflex completely ignored by marketing and most hardware testing outlets? Is there some disconnect in marketing on both AMD and NVidia's side, is it the reviewers, is it a lack of proper ways to test it, is it a lack of interest from the community?

qhfreddy

Do you think the community response of hyping up certain features to be things they are not (in a similar vein to the absurd performance claims of some RDNA3 leaks) creates a lot of negative backlash that marketing can not control?

qhfreddy

Do you think Hallock leaving may have pushed AMD marketing into a downward spiral?

qhfreddy

TPU's W1zzard in regards to the FSR 3 test: I don't think you guys understand how amd played this one. There was no prerelease info, briefing or support. The tech suddenly appeared publicly in two games last week On Friday afternoon, right before everybody goes to weekend, their pr people emailed me "new tech is live now. do you want keys?" So the question is: Sherkelman leaving, AMD PR falls even more apart or it's time to clean house?

KingHarkinian

Do you think AMD upturning its marketing is more likely to be a net positive or a net negative? What about intel? Furthermore, do you think there are more, bigger changes happening "under the hood" of their marketing teams or even beyond that, or do you think it's just changes happening in leadership?

qhfreddy

The early rumblings on FSR3 frame generation seem pretty negative, it requires manually setting an FPS cap and vsync to work for example, and the quality is predictably worse than the already horrendous artefacting of DLSS frame gen. What even is the point of these "features"? Can they even be marketed by anyone?

qhfreddy

Scott Herkelman leaving was surprising but Ryan Shrout's and Jim Ryan's departure made me pause for a moment. Shrout's situation with Intel we know about. However Jim's was almost out of nowhere. I just wanted to get a read from your perspective on -really- everything related to Jim's retirement.

I hope this finds you in good health Tom and Dan. While Scott is a big departure, we know the big picture is Lisa with AMD. Jim leaving Sony USA could be a big change. He was a middle man for lack of a better description to the heads of Sony. Could this have a larger impact on Sony as we see it in the states than we realize?

Loophole35

Hi Tom and Dan. Which of these departures do you each respectively believe to be 100% what it reads on the tin, and which do you believe to be in actually a forced exit disguised as self determined retirement/resignation?

Shadhahvar

Tom and I assume Dan. What do you think of Jim Ryan leaving Sony? I personally think a change of leadership will be good there. It seems like a lot of their employees were uncomfortable with the live service approach he wanted to take and I agree. Sony needs to nail the big single player experiences and maybe just ease off of every game being a third person game.

I feel like Scott Herkelman leaving AMD is the biggest shocker, since he seemed to be doing the best out of the three. I'm not sure how much control he had on Radeon marketing, but he was at least good at delivering presentations and explaining things in podcasts/interview venues. I'm not sure his replacement will be any good at that, which means Frank Azor is probably going to be the ONE guy representing AMD on the podcast/interview circuit whenever they do reveals. Not really surprised by Ryan Shrout leaving Intel and Jim Ryan retiring, just the timing. Shrout's marketing plans seem to have crashed and burned, and Jim Ryan seems like he was a bad fit overall, not even factoring in the life-work balance issues.
