Reader Mail for August Loose Ends

It's been a month, and thus it is time for yet another Livestream!  This time Dan should be joining for at least part of it, and we'll also have some fun physical reader mail to open.  In the meantime, here is a reminder of the developments we've seen over the past month:

You have ~20 hours to submit below.  Be respectful, use good grammar, and be as concise as possible to have your submissions considered!

Tom and Dan, how do feel about Starfield now that is released? The decade long development cycle and in particular VRAM usage being rather low, is this a happy mistake which will boost sales with GPU's a few generations old or will this change with optimization and updates, rendering older renderers to 720p? Dan, get a job and contribute to society. Leech.

Hi Tom, any update on 7800 XT sales? Has the price drop on the 4070 affected sales much?

Chris Rijk

Hi Tom and Dan, what do you think about the new cache DRAM that Intel is developing together with Samsung? Do you think it will be better or comparable to what AMD together with TSMC?

QuickJumper

Apple just released its new iphone 15 pro with new A17 PRo SOC. It's just 10% better in cpu related performance. Does it tell us potentially bad things about the 3 nm process at TSMC, or is Apple just happier with smaller SOC with a bit better performance?

Silvannos

With the 4060 Ti and 4070 getting $50 price drops, do you think Nvidia will be reevaluating where the rest of their line up is positioned or is this the bare minimum to fend off AMD from them?

CompressedAIBlocks

In my opinion this tired old narrative regarding raytracing being the future of gaming is outmoded. Radeon with the RX7800XT is proving at least to me at $499 excellent raster with decent raytracing and a decent software suite is the future. NVidia fan boys in the tech press always push RT narrative and its great software. To most gamers raytracing in the midrange isn't very good. The upscalers on a fairly priced GPU are the things that gamers want and have been clamoring for.

Does AMD have an equivalent technology to DLSS 3.5 coming? Given their relative ray tracing weakness to nVidia, you would figure a DLSS 3.5 equivalent would be as beneficial, if not moreso, to AMD GPUs

Greetings, does amd have a competitor for ultra low-end laptops(twinlake), whether currently or in the future? Is it a market worth getting into?

Xavbeat03

This one is for Dan! After having the 7900 XTX for a little bit now, have any of your initial impressions changed? Do you think you will benefit from FSR3?

PCDog

Probably more fake frames, and more excitingly image quality improvements (as unexciting as that may sound). If we're lucky they will reduce the latency.

DeadOfKnight

I have to make a comment about starfield that I think gets missed. I recently upgraded to a 7900xt (thanks microcenter for your excellent prices & selection) due partially to the free starfield deal. The game has the usual Bethesda teething issues but it's fun. I also played it on my 3070 laptop using FSR. It was equally fun. The fact that FSR works on Nvidia cards means it's not like I was missing upscaling tech. DLSS probably would have looked better but the game ran fine. I wouldn't choose the 3070 laptop over the 7900xt but the game is far from unplayable at that level of hardware.

How are all the animals getting along with each other? 2 dogs and a cat must mean chaos!

I'd love your thoughts on a hypothetical question: What if NVIDIA went with TSMC 7nm with the Turing 20 series as opposed to staying on the same 16/12nm node as Pascal? Could they have done it? The 3080 was better than 2080Ti-- but required a lot more power draw to do it.

Jeffrey Reyes

Which month do you estimate we’ll hear more about performance and power targets for N43 and N44? Do you think the dies could get a CU increase, or do you think they’ll likely remain at 64 and 32?

TechnoLadz

I'm curious too but I was thinking maybe Apple wants more battery life? with a new node the designer of the chip always compromises between more performance with same power draw or less power draw for equal performance

Jeffrey Reyes

It's curious how times change - Apple's new A17 Pro was just announced on 3nm and the CPU is about 10% faster than their previous design, which is also what they managed with their previous two designs. Apple seems to have stagnated and I'm seeing lots of comparisons to Intel in the 2010s. I don't have any good explanations for why but maybe they don't feel the need to improve performance?

Chris Rijk

In a recent BS, much was made about Intel reporting anonymous telemetry data via their driver package. I may be wrong but don't AMD and Nvidia also do this and Nvidia does it without providing a way to opt-out?

deepglugs

Can you speak on the switch 2? The leaked performance (Botw 4k 60 and ff7r) using dlss? What does the hardware look to have currently? When can we expect it to release?

Falto

Have any of your developer contacts mentioned being excited about FSR 3? Do developers like FSR, or are they more partial to DLSS for the improved image quality?

Yeti

When will the next generation start of gpus? I remember you mentioning that they might launch them later than usual?

Falto

What do you think Nvidia will do with dlss 4.0? Any mini leaks?

Falto
