Reader Mail for August Loose Ends
Added 2023-09-14 22:35:55 +0000 UTCIt's been a month, and thus it is time for yet another Livestream! This time Dan should be joining for at least part of it, and we'll also have some fun physical reader mail to open. In the meantime, here is a reminder of the developments we've seen over the past month:
- Navi 4C's Design was Leaked
- Potential Specs for Navi 43/44 have been Leaked
- AMD Revealed FSR 3
- Nvidia Revealed DLSS 3.5
- The RX 7800 XT & RX 7700 XT have been launched
- Starfield has released to endless controversy (and success)
- Both the RTX 4060 Ti 16GB & RTX 4070 12GB have received $50 price drops
- New Details about Zen 5's Possibilities have been revealed
- Little Phoenix Specs have been confirmed
- Intel Raptor Lake Refresh & Meteor Lake Lineups have leaked

Tom and Dan, how do feel about Starfield now that is released? The decade long development cycle and in particular VRAM usage being rather low, is this a happy mistake which will boost sales with GPU's a few generations old or will this change with optimization and updates, rendering older renderers to 720p? Dan, get a job and contribute to society. Leech.

2023-09-15 18:46:36 +0000 UTCHi Tom, any update on 7800 XT sales? Has the price drop on the 4070 affected sales much?

2023-09-15 17:37:10 +0000 UTCHi Tom and Dan, what do you think about the new cache DRAM that Intel is developing together with Samsung? Do you think it will be better or comparable to what AMD together with TSMC?

2023-09-15 12:29:30 +0000 UTCApple just released its new iphone 15 pro with new A17 PRo SOC. It's just 10% better in cpu related performance. Does it tell us potentially bad things about the 3 nm process at TSMC, or is Apple just happier with smaller SOC with a bit better performance?

2023-09-15 05:20:50 +0000 UTCWith the 4060 Ti and 4070 getting $50 price drops, do you think Nvidia will be reevaluating where the rest of their line up is positioned or is this the bare minimum to fend off AMD from them?

2023-09-15 02:56:06 +0000 UTCIn my opinion this tired old narrative regarding raytracing being the future of gaming is outmoded. Radeon with the RX7800XT is proving at least to me at $499 excellent raster with decent raytracing and a decent software suite is the future. NVidia fan boys in the tech press always push RT narrative and its great software. To most gamers raytracing in the midrange isn't very good. The upscalers on a fairly priced GPU are the things that gamers want and have been clamoring for.

2023-09-15 02:21:47 +0000 UTCDoes AMD have an equivalent technology to DLSS 3.5 coming? Given their relative ray tracing weakness to nVidia, you would figure a DLSS 3.5 equivalent would be as beneficial, if not moreso, to AMD GPUs

2023-09-15 00:47:47 +0000 UTCGreetings, does amd have a competitor for ultra low-end laptops(twinlake), whether currently or in the future? Is it a market worth getting into?

2023-09-15 00:20:01 +0000 UTCThis one is for Dan! After having the 7900 XTX for a little bit now, have any of your initial impressions changed? Do you think you will benefit from FSR3?

2023-09-15 00:03:14 +0000 UTCProbably more fake frames, and more excitingly image quality improvements (as unexciting as that may sound). If we're lucky they will reduce the latency.

2023-09-15 00:00:39 +0000 UTCI have to make a comment about starfield that I think gets missed. I recently upgraded to a 7900xt (thanks microcenter for your excellent prices & selection) due partially to the free starfield deal. The game has the usual Bethesda teething issues but it's fun. I also played it on my 3070 laptop using FSR. It was equally fun. The fact that FSR works on Nvidia cards means it's not like I was missing upscaling tech. DLSS probably would have looked better but the game ran fine. I wouldn't choose the 3070 laptop over the 7900xt but the game is far from unplayable at that level of hardware.

2023-09-14 23:05:17 +0000 UTCI'd love your thoughts on a hypothetical question: What if NVIDIA went with TSMC 7nm with the Turing 20 series as opposed to staying on the same 16/12nm node as Pascal? Could they have done it? The 3080 was better than 2080Ti-- but required a lot more power draw to do it.

2023-09-14 22:58:48 +0000 UTCWhich month do you estimate we’ll hear more about performance and power targets for N43 and N44? Do you think the dies could get a CU increase, or do you think they’ll likely remain at 64 and 32?

2023-09-14 22:56:59 +0000 UTCI'm curious too but I was thinking maybe Apple wants more battery life? with a new node the designer of the chip always compromises between more performance with same power draw or less power draw for equal performance

2023-09-14 22:53:59 +0000 UTCIt's curious how times change - Apple's new A17 Pro was just announced on 3nm and the CPU is about 10% faster than their previous design, which is also what they managed with their previous two designs. Apple seems to have stagnated and I'm seeing lots of comparisons to Intel in the 2010s. I don't have any good explanations for why but maybe they don't feel the need to improve performance?

2023-09-14 22:52:06 +0000 UTCIn a recent BS, much was made about Intel reporting anonymous telemetry data via their driver package. I may be wrong but don't AMD and Nvidia also do this and Nvidia does it without providing a way to opt-out?

2023-09-14 22:42:47 +0000 UTCCan you speak on the switch 2? The leaked performance (Botw 4k 60 and ff7r) using dlss? What does the hardware look to have currently? When can we expect it to release?
