Owning the RX 7900 XTX & 2023 GPU Pricing - Die Shrink Telegrams
Added 2023-07-26 19:45:37 +0000 UTCAs many of you know, Tom recently tested the 7900 XTX for a couple weeks, and now Dan has played around with it as well! This is actually the first AMD dGPU Tom has used extensively since the RX 6500 XT, and this is also of course the first time Tom & Dan have tried out RDNA 3...So what do we think about it? What do you ALL think about it?
For this week's episode we want to take questions/comments from you all about:
- As someone who used RTX cards from 2021-2023, did Tom miss Nvidia?
- Does Dan really "feel" the difference between N22 and N31?
- Did Tom "feel" the difference between the 4090 and 7900 XTX?
- Did either of them have any issues with RDNA 3?
- What do we think about "fair" RDNA 3 vs Lovelace pricing?
- Do any of you have any thoughts about going from RTX to RDNA 3, or RDNA to RTX?
Please don't hesitate to give us your thoughts and ask ANYTHING surrounding these subjects! You have at least 4 hours to submit below depending on when we record. Don't wait too long to submit for this one!

I upgraded from an Xfx merc 319 rx6800xt to an Xfx merc 310 rx 7900xtx. The card was already on sale at Newegg and when the starfield deal went live I could easily justify the card for a real world price of 819 after the game deal. Now I can drive my aw3423dwf to 165hz in almost everything I regularly play.

2023-07-27 15:12:14 +0000 UTCHi Tom and Dan, one AMD, on Nvidia question for you. re: Nvidia, it looks like they've adopted a weird tick tock pattern where even generations are just terrible value and panned and the odd ones are pretty good. Why do you think this is and do you see the 5000 generation actually being good value? Re: AMD I got a used rx 6800 reference for $350 earlier in the year. None of the RDNA 3 cards are exciting upgrades for me. Am I going to get an exciting upgrade from AMD next gen or will used RDNA 3 (like a $500 7900xt when next gen launches) be the upgrade path?

2023-07-27 14:34:47 +0000 UTCHey Guys, how is the coil whine on your 7900xtx ? I always had bad luck with the high tier AMD models. My previous card was a 6900xt with insanely loud whine.

2023-07-27 07:53:05 +0000 UTCHey Tom I recommended my friend get a 7900 xt for his new build but he's been having driver issues (crashing) have you guys been experiencing that at all?

2023-07-27 00:25:46 +0000 UTCHey, Tom and Dan! I managed to get an RX 7900 XTX reference model on launch day, and my experience has been overall positive. I play games at 4K, and the move from 12GB on my RTX 3080 Ti to 24GB on the XTX is really noticeable in newer games. I did however have some driver issues for the first 2-3 months that the card was out, though they have mostly been resolved with updates. Have you had any issues with crashes or freezing with your card, or has it mostly been smooth sailing?

2023-07-26 22:42:30 +0000 UTCCurious if you could run a canned benchmark to get a rough idea of how driver performance has progressed since launch. Has rdna 3 created any more distance between rdna 2 since launch?

2023-07-26 22:21:09 +0000 UTCHey Tom. Bit of an odd question...but do you have any info or foresee if RDNA 4 will allow for smaller designs? I picked up a 6950XT and holy..... 5lbs and 13+ inches long. Thankfully its thinner than the Nvidia cards. I know they have oversized coolers, but really...? Makes my old Nvidia 2070 XXC look like a toy. Is there any hope on the horizon of die shrinks that indicate going back to something more reasonable in size? Preferably 10"-11" or so for the high end?

2023-07-26 22:14:25 +0000 UTCHey Tom and Dan! I upgraded from the GTX 10 series to the XFX 7900 XTX. I must say it’s impressive and I am quite happy with it. Although it takes up the entire length of my case! What was the thermal performance for your card? Specifically, the memory junction temps. Also, what GPU BIOS version did you use? The default config or the secondary?

2023-07-26 21:59:15 +0000 UTCConsider how much additional performance the top end GPUs of the next generation could have and let's say you were given the choice between more raster performance and more RT performance. What percentage of each would you go for and why? Would you pick the same percentages for mid-range and low-end GPUs?

2023-07-26 21:09:26 +0000 UTCWhat surprised you the most about your experience with the 7900xtx? Did anything really break your expectations? What did you think of the raytracing performance with FSR 2 enabled? I was impressed with games like the Witcher and Hogwart’s Legacy. For reference I was all AMD in the early days, then I bought a 1080ti I loved before switching back to AMD with a 6900xt and now the XFX Merc 7900xtx. My target is 4k 120Hz gaming and now I think Raytracing will have a bigger role in my purchasing decisions, but I will stay in the same tier/price bracket around $1k if I can.

2023-07-26 21:02:14 +0000 UTCHi Tom and Dan, how's the Xtx's Raytracing performance. How do you think it compared to last gens high end cards and other current generation cards. Do you think it provides a solid gaming experience with Raytracing turned on? Are there any compromises you need to make?

2023-07-26 20:51:44 +0000 UTCHi Tom, how much performance did you gain from overclocking? How much of a premium would you be willing to pay over a reference design for the extra capability?

2023-07-26 20:43:11 +0000 UTCHello Tom and Dan. A relatively hidden driver feature I quite enjoy since switching to RTX is DLDSR, which makes older games look incredible by applying AI enhanced down sampling. Have either of you experienced any similarly obscure driver features from AMD or Nvidia that you think deserve to be highlighted?

2023-07-26 20:17:36 +0000 UTCGoing from Ampere to RDNA 3 has been better than I was expecting, call me crazy but Adrenaline is miles ahead of GeForce in its feature set its insane how little it is talked about especially when features/software are a big push nowadays. If you’re like me and you make a lot of clips of games or of friends AMD Relive is a must, shadow play looking back at it now is laughable bad up against relive. A personal experience I’ve come out positive with is A good friend of mine is in the Air Force, he carries a horrible 1650 laptop around when he’s being sent out to different parts of the world leaving his desktop on base. I’ve been letting him remote into my PC with AMD link and he’s been able to play games with a decent experience considering some places have bad connection. The only negatives I’ve come across is the idle power draw, but thanks to members of the MLID discord it’s been easy to circumvent. The only thing I thought I’d miss being nvidia reflex I find myself not caring for at all.

2023-07-26 20:10:03 +0000 UTCHi Tom and Dan, How has the ray tracing been on the 7900XTX? NVidia cards are typically seen as better for ray tracing, but if rDNA3 is good enough, it seems like it would be a great high end card with VRAM to spare. Also, what feature(s) in rDNA3 that needs the most improvement when compared to nVidia? Keep up the great content!

2023-07-26 20:08:45 +0000 UTCHello good sirs, I'm interested in the XTX thermals. Considering a build with a 7800 X3D and 7900 XTX in a fractal terra case. This means it will need to be more of a reference design GPU compared the more built up Red Devil line.

2023-07-26 20:05:30 +0000 UTCHi Tom and Dan, Ignoring raw performance, are the intangibles/quality of life features of the xtx close enough to the 4080 to make it a no brainer recommendation? Or, is there still something 'missing' in the amd experience? What are your visceral feelings towards the 7900 xtx?

2023-07-26 19:57:49 +0000 UTCWith the v-ram being so much larger compared to an RTX 3080 10Gb, would you find it worth upgrading from 10Gb to the 7900 XTX 24Gb? Would Dlss 2 be a convincing factor to keep you on the green team or would FSR performance be suitable to your liking in place of nvidias offerings? and lastly, does AMD have anything close to a “rage mode” that would work in tandem with a ryzen CPU? Thanks for all the great listening!

2023-07-26 19:56:58 +0000 UTCI'm seconding Falto on the emulation subject. I've got a 7900XT and absolutely love it, but I've had DirectX problems in Xenia (360 emulator) that I don't encounter with Paacal and Vega. Also, I've had issues where trying to use Xbox Game Bar to record clips in EA titles like Battlefield 4 crashes my game. So far, that's just about my only gripe with the card.

2023-07-26 19:56:49 +0000 UTCDid Dan notice a practical difference between no framegen but reflex on, and DLSS3 framegen/AMD Antilag level input latency? Much to-do about the latency but Igor’s Lab and Battlenonsense both show Reflex as being significantly ahead of AMD Antilag in latency to begin with (eg overwatch2 training map) and since people don’t notice the higher input latency on AMD I’m not sure framegen is a difference that matters either.

2023-07-26 19:54:28 +0000 UTCLast question I swear Tom. Did you use RDNA 3 for any professional/productivity work at all? If so, how did it fare against Lovelace?

2023-07-26 19:53:54 +0000 UTCWhat do you think would be a fair price for each of Nvidia and Amds lineup?

2023-07-26 19:53:12 +0000 UTCHi Tom, this is a question I wanted to ask you for a long time. Did you have the time to do any napkin math IPC comparison between rDNA 3 and 2? Because the rDNA 3 CU are supposed to be double purpose, but superficial performance comparison shows that all performance improvements come from increasing CU count and clock speed. I remember we were somewhat disappointed about the double purpose Ampere CU performance boost, but here it looks way worse.

2023-07-26 19:53:00 +0000 UTCHave you guys tested emulation and video editing on RDNA 3? If so how does it fair compared to Nvidia cards? For me emulation, video editing (and DLSS) are some of the main reason I decided to stick with Nvidia. For emulation I mainly use Switch, PS2/3 and Xbox 360 games on my pc and use Vegas pro software to edit videos.

2023-07-26 19:52:28 +0000 UTCTom. You've used the RTX 4090 and RX 7900 XTX now. How do you ultimately feel the drivers stack up? I myself feel RDNA 2 has essentially nailed the drivers, with only a few quirks here and there (while AMD has a VASTLY superior layout for their control panel). Has AMD "caught up" to Nvidia in terms of software and driver stability/feature stack?

2023-07-26 19:50:59 +0000 UTCAre the encoders that bad? If i wanna use the graphics card to record my gameplay does the improved RTX encoders really make a diference?
Eduard
2023-07-26 19:49:54 +0000 UTCAt launch, as usual there were significant driver issues with the cards, with AMD even pulling resources from their previous generation driver teams to try to resolve them. How do you feel about the drivers now ?

2023-07-26 19:49:09 +0000 UTCSir Dannyworth. How is the difference from Navi 22 to Navi 31? I myself have a 6700 XT and have been CONSTANTLY eyeing the market for Navi 31 (but always say "wait for Navi 32" for some reason). Was it a massive upgrade for you? Any issues, driver wise, over RDNA 2?

2023-07-26 19:49:02 +0000 UTCTom and Dan, how do you feel about the overall efficiency of RDNA 3 now that you've both used it? Was it something that just threw insane heat back into your room? Any power issues? I ask this because RDNA 2 was pretty wicked in this regard and it seems they've went backwards here.
