Discussing the Rise and Fall of GPU Prices w/ an MLID Ex-Source!

Broken Silicon's next guest will see the anonymous appearance of a former Moore's Law Is Dead source who informed on Retail Sales, Volume, and Launch info from Vietnam.  This was but ONE of dozens of retail sources who helped break the stories on Ampere's (Fake) launch and GPU shenanigans going on over the past few years.

You can ask this guest ANYTHING about the Maxwell - Ampere / RX 200 - RDNA 2 generations, challenges in retail, and what he thinks about current GPU pricing.  Let's talk about if things are "back to normal" finally!

You have ~36 hours (till Sunday Morning US Central Time) to submit questions below.  Be respectful, use good grammar, and be as concise as possible to have your submissions considered!

Hello, I know this may be a bit off topic for this show. I've heard you talk about the best power supplies but what about UPS to protect and allow you to properly shut down in a power outage. We just built a new computer with a 7950x3d under $550 and new 6950xt for $550 and got Starfield. I want it all protected appropriately. Thanks!

Hey Tom and Guest. I know I missed the last call ping by about 5 hours, so this may not get answered. But if this does manage to sneak its way in, do you think that Nvidia will increase Blackwell pricing over Lovelace? If so, do you think that more AIBs will leave, as Nvidia continues to increase their margins while they get pennies.

Hi Tom and guest! Long time viewer, first time supporter. I'm quite young and started learning about gpu generations and general pc stuff about 5 years ago. I remember when I started and the rx 580 4gb and 8gb where the used bang for buck king that seemed like it could play anything at 1080p. As game requirements rose, those cards seem completely unusable for current year games at 1080p. Do you see a card in the current or previous gen that might fill the same role as the years go on or has the industry hit a point where you can't have a few year old card that doesn't get squashed in the new games?

I'd would love to know what the segmentation in the market was like in Turing (what percent bought 60/70/80 class). How bad were sales of that vs pascal & was the segmentation different?

How would you characterise Nvidia's current strategy? Does it make sense to you? Have you seen any similar scenarios where a company had such a huge amount of unsold stock and if so, how was it resolved?

Chris Rijk

How important do you consider DIY to be to the overall PC market? Do you see trends in DIY spilling over into the rest of the market?

Chris Rijk

How much further can the distaste for the current GPU offerings push down pricing? Will the GPU manufacturers focus on adding features to justify the higher than previous gen pricing instead of pricing changes?

Woody Chang

Hey Tom and and guest. Quick question. If AMD is planning a RDNA 3 refresh, which since I haven't seen a leak about it, probably won't happen at this point, but if they did, which cards do you think would refresh? Another 750xt/ 650XT/950XT, or the whole line...seriously doubt that...or just the high end just to make a 4090 killer and something to combat a 4080ti if NVIDIA decided to drop one. Also, what would the pricing look like in this scenario as well? Thanks guys! And I'll take shot of whiskey everytime Tom says the word "leak"! Lol

According to google, the average wage in South Vietnam is only a few hundred dollars (US) a month. With such low wages, most pc sales and pc parts sales would almost have to be the low to low midrange. I’m wondering how the elevated prices during the gpu shortage years affected consumers, as well as now where the low end is seeing new releases that don’t perform as well as the previous gen. I would think that value has to be way more important to the Vietnamese consumer than here in the US. Is this so?

SavageSMC

Did the GPU shortage change the outlook for brick and mortar electronics retailers? I was thinking that quite a few US retailers forced you to come in person to get your GPU during the COVID, and I was thinking that might have given a few more opportunities for those stores to make a sale. Thanks!

Woody Chang

It seems that Nvidia has much better sales in Europe compared to the US. Do you agree? If so, is this recent and what might be causing it? How does the rest of the world compare?

Chris Rijk

What are some of the biggest challenges of launching computer hardware in a market that is in a state of recession from a Retail pov?

Dylan K.

What percentage of GPUs get returned? What happened with people who tried to do returns during the GPU shortages?

rafa zaya

Any good stories about procurement and/or negotiations for product around the time of GPU shortages?

rafa zaya

Is it fair to say that Gpus simply operate on low margins and retailers try to make up costs with other products once customers are in the door. If so, what other products have reliably higher margins? If not, when have gpus had much better margins for retailers? Thanks!

Jamwap

What are the most important factors that make a GPU launch successful or unsuccessful in the perspective of a retailer?

Rootknight

Was the GTX 970 a popular card in your region? Here in the US, it was a big part of the PC gaming renaissance, and lots of gamers held onto them well into the Ampere/RDNA 2 generation due to the shortages/scalping. If not, what were/are the popular cards in the Vietnamese PC gaming community?

Cleansweep

How has selling GPUs changed since when you started working in retail?

qhfreddy

With NVidias high margins while leaving almost none to AIBS, do you think more will follow EVGAs example in leaving the GPU business? Cause currently it seems like NVidia is making a killing while board-partners are left to fend for themselves while being treated poorly.

Dave Scholze

What was the most bogus claim made by any tech company you've seen, and did it affect sales of any of their products?

Totally Not Suspicious White Man

Ampere’s MSRP was not fake. AIBS simply didn’t understand the need to reduce margins to bring pricing benefits to consumers.
