Discussing Sapphire Rapids, Threadripper, and Intel's Future w/ an Audio Workstation Engineer

Broken Silicon's next guest will be Vin Curigliano, owner of AAVIMT.com.au, a Custom PC building company that specializes in Digital Audio Workstations!

Now, that sounds very niche - but don't kid yourself, this guy is an veteran of the market with many connections at Intel, Microsoft, and other "regular companies" we cover on this show!  This episode will focus heavily on:

This episode will, as usual, be heavily steered by your submissions below.  I really encourage you all to feel safe asking in-depth questions about AMD vs Intel Workstation hardware, Intel's inner-company issues, and the future of competition!  You have ~36 hours (Till Sunday Morning US Central Time) to submit below!

Intel and Nvidia has alot more debt than Amd, hos much will the interest hikes affect how the companies do business

With Zen4 AMD finally adds support for (some) AVX-512. How does their implementation compare to Intel's and how large is the performance boost for workloads you typically work with?

Curufinwe

Are boost algorithms problematic for audio workloads? What are your experiences in this respect?

qhfreddy

In your segment, how much are the Sapphire Rapids accelerators used? What about AVX(512)?

qhfreddy

Why do you think we don't see workstation parts with cabled PCIe as is used in servers? Do you think it would be worthwhile to use in workstations?

qhfreddy

What's your biggest gripe other than power efficiency about Sapphire Rapids workstation parts? What about Threadripper?

qhfreddy

How much is too much when it comes to PCIe? Some people had concerns about the PCIe bifurcation of SPR only going down to x4 while AMDs one goes all the way to X1, how much does this matter for practical workstation use?

qhfreddy

How does Sapphire Rapids stack up against the previously released AMD Threadripper parts?

qhfreddy

Hi Tom and Vin. With the advancements in AI and AI hardware is there going to be a point where CPU's and GPU's converge and also new kinds of hardware(not just the AI chips) will take the dominant role? FSR and DLSS kind of offer us a glimpse of what AI could be useful in the future.

QuickJumper

I often hear people argue along the lines of "why do you want HEDT if you can get 16 cores on desktop?" What is your response to these kind of arguments?

qhfreddy

Hi Tom and Vin, this may have been something that has been discussed in the past but, what is next in the semiconductor industry after silicon engineers and architecture designers can no longer shrink transistor size or increase die size to continue pushing performance/the industry is self forward. What material/s could be a proper replacement for p/n type silicon transistors. Or what techniques could be used to push silicon forward once size alone can no longer decrease?

Keakum

Is Vin aware that they still have a Google + link on their site that leads to nothing?

infinitevalence

Hi Tom & Vin. Question for Vin, I've been running optical audio into a dac with a mini amp and some bookshelf speakers and they sound ok, but I really can't tell much of a difference from the $25 sound blaster speakers I was running before. Is it the equipment or me?

B. Fish

I am not at all experienced with audio workloads. Can you describe the CPU/GPU loads required with a variety of example tasks?

FloridaMan

On the AAVIM website, I noticed that there currently are no mobile options available for audio workstations. What is the process for getting mobile audio workstations, and are there unique challenges to spec'ing out and configuring a laptop for the role?

Cleansweep

Hey Tom and Vin, What kind of audio features would you want Microsoft to integrate into Windows 11 and onward, both for audio production and consumption? Personally, I would love for Windows audio drivers to have a universal equalizer/tuner with a few useful presets like dialogue enhancement. It'd be nice to not have to reinstall Alan Finotty's custom audio drivers just to get those quality of life features every time I update my GPU audio driver.

Cleansweep

Hey Tom and Vin. Your channel as went from an Intel fan boy channel to the Intel doom channel haha. But in all seriousness I am worried about Intel, it seems like almost everytime we get some info on them there is very little good and a whole lot of disaster. I am excited for the news of the 14700K being 8+12, be a good replacement for my 13700k. Do you think Intel has any hope of picking themselves up at this point because it's beginning to seem like Intel may just become a fab company that makes CPUs and GPUs on the side in the future.

Kinihun25

What are things you typically consider when putting together an audio workstation? Are there any unusual decisions you might make when compared to other types of workstations?

Xavbeat03

When looking at Mainboard spec sheets I always wonder if the advertised sound chips do actually sound different from another. Should I consider the quality of sound chip when choosing a Mainboard as someone that wouldn't spend on a soundcard or external equipment

Tillx100

Do you have a favourite part from the lineup? Do you think there is a gap in their lineup against what AMD currently (and in the future are expected to) offer?

qhfreddy

What were your first thoughts when you got your hands on the Sapphire Rapids workstation parts? How have those changed since then?

qhfreddy

How is Threadripper for DAWs, considering it's MCM and all the latency issues it has?
