Discussing the Legality of Patent Trolls, ARC, Nvidia 16-Pin Issues with Hoeg Law - Guest Telegrams
Added 2022-11-27 23:05:21 +0000 UTCBroken Silicon 181 will see the return of Richard Hoeg of the "Hoeg Law" YouTube channel! So far the planned main subjects include:
- Intel getting Patent Trolled by VLSI
- Intel paying Patent Trolls to go after Companies
- If Intel mislead investors with their ARC Alchemist "Launches"
- The point at which Battlemage (or any product) hasn't launched as promised
- The Potential for Nvidia to be Sued over the 16-Pin Failures, and their obligations
But please - write in with other legal questions related to Nvidia, AMD, Intel, or other silicon/hardware companies that you are curious about! This is a rare opportunity to ask legal questions of an expert who understands gaming - please don't be afraid to bring up things outside of what is listed above while you have the chance! Just make sure it's well written, as concise as possible, and respectful.
You have ~14 hours (till Late Monday Morning 11/28 US Central Time) to submit your inquiries below! Sorry for the short-ish notice, it was a holiday weekend for both me and Richard!

in general who benefits from patent trolling? Is there any incentive for regulators to control or restrict it in any manner?

2022-11-28 17:21:26 +0000 UTCNot a question, but Rick, thank you for the 40+ video series you've been doing on Microsoft-Activision, it's really nice to see the entire process, all the ups and downs broken down in digestible chunks

2022-11-28 16:57:49 +0000 UTCPerhaps a counterfactual, comparing the legal challenges of Intel acquiring Tower Semi compared to the Intel-GloFo deal that Intel went for before that.

2022-11-28 14:14:46 +0000 UTCIf you are really looking for content, ask about the whole structure of IBM-GloFo deal and the subsequent GloFo-ONSemi deal. It§s older stuff, but seems quite wild to me. GloFo are the masters of the deal. They got paid $1.5bn by IBM to take IBM's fabs - mainly Malta and East Fishkill. And then, GloFo turned around and flipped East Fishkill (which is like 1/4 to 1/3 of Malta) to ON Semi for $430mio. So GloFo bought a big modern fab in Malta, and made almost two billion on the purchase 🤣 How is this a legal question? Because IBM is suing GloFo over this whole situation. Here's the most recent news on that case: https://www.paulweiss.com/practices/litigation/litigation/news/ibm-wins-appeal-reviving-fraud-claim-in-25-billion-lawsuit?id=42878

2022-11-28 14:14:22 +0000 UTCHi Tom and Richard, Arm and Qualcomm are currently in a dispute over what the Nuvia acquisition means for the Arm licensing. Qualcomm seems to want to use the cheaper Nuvia license and Arm is claiming Qualcomm may not use any of the IP created at Nuvia and combine it with Qualcomm IP. Or at least, this is what I understood from what I read. Do you think Arm has a decent case regarding the IP claim? Related to this, do you think the RISC-V ISA being open source solves these legal issues for chip designers?

2022-11-28 12:25:14 +0000 UTCHi Richard and Tom, just recently I saw Warren Buffett wants to buy big share of TSMC. I was wondering if there is possibility of FTC/SEC intervening in finance side deals? To me this looks very critical company for many other companies right now, just not same way merger like nvidia/ARM case. So far this case looks purely investing case, no other goals, but majority owner of any company has say to business decisions if that happens.

2022-11-28 08:04:02 +0000 UTCHi Tom and Richard, I saw one video where Richard suggested MS-Activision/Blizzard deal could be blocked by FTC, how likely is that at this point, almost a year in the process(MS/Xbox team has started planning their operations like deal went through already)?

2022-11-28 08:00:19 +0000 UTCTwo main rivals (Intel/AMD) are owned by the same three giant hedge funds...State Street, Vanguard, Blackrock. How does that pan out in the age of supposed "competition"? Can there be a Board conflict of interest in voting at investor meetings?

2022-11-28 01:14:37 +0000 UTCWelcome back to the show Rich! I would like your perspective on the situation that is ongoing between ARM and Qualcomm. Up until earlier this month there was a lot "they said this and that" moments. After it came to light that ARM is looking to possibly change the way they handle licensing IP and designs to partners and OEM's, do you think that this new information may garner the attention of a lot of western government agencies and market watchdog groups? Do you think it could shake up the legal landscape for companies looking to expand their own IP from one primary market into a secondary market?
