Initial RTX 4080 Reactions and 4090 Test Results - Die Shrink Telegrams
Added 2022-11-15 23:05:37 +0000 UTCWell, the 4080 is out...what do you think? Got any questions for Tom regarding his new RTX 4090 SUPRIM Liquid?
Tom and Dan will sit down in a few hours to discuss their initial thoughts on the RTX 4080, how RDNA 3 will stack up, and what we think of the 4090 Tom is testing so far.
Feel free to chime in now or after Tom posts his video today - but do note that you only have ~3 hours to respond with your comments and questions below. For your submission to be considered you must use good grammar, be concise, and be respectful :).

I just don't see the point of that. I personally don't see a point of gaming beyond 60 Hz, and you won't notice the difference of 12-bit color depth. 120 Hz is nice for desktop use. I haven't tested anything beyond that, though. So yeah, HDMI 2.1 is more than good enough in my opinion.

2022-11-16 11:30:07 +0000 UTCJust want to say that every single reviewer/youtuber keeps pointing out that HDMI2.1 and Display port 1.4 was good enough for them. There outright ignoring tons of people plays older games where hitting 4K 120+hrz at 12 bit rate color and without video signal compression would be preferable. The fact that Nvidia doesn't have even Display port 2.0 means that New features made to take advantage of things like High-quality HDR and 12bit color on New displays coming to market will not be useable by these cards and it is a great loss.

2022-11-16 09:34:02 +0000 UTCHi Tom and Dan, What the fuck is going on with reviewers finding a positive “efficiency” spin on the 4080. We have just a moved from a $700 3080 to a $1200 (if you can get it at this price) 4080. They should have been hammered for this.
2022-11-16 07:06:23 +0000 UTCHi T & D, I have no interest in spending this kind of money on a graphics card no matter how good it is, because I simply don't prioritize gaming that amount. From my POV, 40 series may as well not exist for the time being.

2022-11-16 03:31:18 +0000 UTCHow are you liking the 4090 Suprim Liquid so far in terms of thermals and noise? I recently worked to validate two of those in a workstation build offering with a Threadripper Pro and they are really nice cards. In thermal testing, one GPU hit 68 and the other hit 64 and that was along with a 280W CPU and 1 TB of RAM. I run one in my personal rig as well and's super quiet and fantastic. How often are you checking for the burnt connector?

2022-11-16 02:14:37 +0000 UTCHi Tom and Dan, Reviews for the RTX 4080 weren’t that exciting, with performance landing near where people predicted. What I did find noteworthy was that like the 4090, it tended to draw less power with most workloads than its advertised tgp. Another example of a card with an overbuilt cooler. This feels like it could have easily been a 2-slots wide design with a 300watts tgp, and have similar performance.

2022-11-16 01:23:58 +0000 UTCHello Tom and Dan , the 4080 performs right around where you’d expect. The interesting thing is the power usage, it’s a little lower than I expected as it seems to rarely hit the claimed 320 watt tdp. Which brings me to my question: why didn’t Nvidia reuse the 3080 cooler? Now this already overpriced card will have these behemoth and more expensive coolers that it doesn’t need.

2022-11-16 00:58:02 +0000 UTCI'm not really impressed price wise but the performance per watt is there. Seems it's quite a balanced card if it had a smaller cooler and would have been like 900 instead of 1200.

2022-11-16 00:53:44 +0000 UTCHi Tom and Dan - if Nvidia decides that 4080 style pricing is the "new normal", do you think the dGPU market could stagnate like the mobile phone market? Or is its pricing likely to be a short term anomaly while Ampere stocks last?

2022-11-16 00:11:12 +0000 UTCHi Tom and Dan, my thoughts on the 4080 are simple. Like Tom has said many times before, there’s no such thing as a bad product, just a poorly priced one. Or something to that tune, the funny part is the massive cooler for the TDP it’s drawing. The whole situation sucks to me because the card itself actually performs well considering the power it uses, but everything around it sucks, and those things to me are highlighted more because of the competition.
