Die Shrink 81: RADEON vs GeForce in 2022 – How are we feeling?

How do we all feel about RADEON vs GeForce? We aren't just here to talk about relative performance - this episode is an open discussion about who is “winning” in mindshare, features, and what you typically get out of either a RADEON or GeForce product.  We wanted to do this before Lovelace and RDNA 3 launch during one of the final "quiet" weeks in GPU news...and we feel this is the closest we'll get!

Before Next Gen GPU news gets crazy, let's get a lay of the land...

I'm a bit late getting to this one, but yeah, fuuuuuuuuuck Gigabyte. I had to update my bios to move from Zen 1 to Zen 3 and their specific tool for updating the EC almost bricked my board and borked the temp windows installation I put on to use their tool TWICE. I just gave up on it and consigned to only having 2 working ram slots instead of risking bricked hardware.

lol on my 4k monitor it might as well be 600x384, had to use the "zoom" feature of my browser.

That's part of my point. My first 5700XT was like that...the replacement? Exact opposite. By 2021, the Radeon drivers were night and day better than launch, which leaves the hardware itself to ponder the disparity in experience with the same cards.

RDNA1 was a clusterfuck of bad drivers, silicon level bugs and general AMD insanity.

Nvidia isn't really a perfect experience either, they each have their issues. My 3080 has horrendous multi-monitor support. I get annoying instances of my screens shutting off momentarily and then coming back on. I have to keep at least one of my monitors plugged in via hdmi because the card handles display port handshakes so badly my system gives up and crashes sometimes when the monitors wake up from sleep if they are all plugged in via display port. It's been frustrating enough that I will probably switch to radeon when the next gen cards come out, though I have no idea if nvidia will fix these issues, which I've seen a lot of people having.

Could be both the worse GPU binning and the hardware bugs that have been to my knowledge fixed with drivers. Less stern QC would push some of the cards past their capability, resulting in instability. It makes sense.

Sometimes I wonder if AMD has less stringent quality control criteria in relation to their GPU binning, which would explain some of the disparity in experiences between Radeon users. My first 5700XT had crashing issues, which got progressively worse, until it became basically unusable, and frustrated me to the point where I stopped gaming for almost 2 months. I got it RMA'd, and the difference with the replacement card was night and day. No more constant crashing, it was rock solid. I ended up selling that card during the height of the mining craze for a thousand dollars, and bought a 6900XT, which has been fantastic for me since day 1, with occasional driver issues that are promply solved by a roll back and/or moving to the newest release. When people talk about having AMD driver issues, I usually chalk it up to user error, and things like not doing proper driver uninstall prior, inferior components in the rest of the build, etc. But, what if it's an issue where AMD simply allows chips to get approved for use in cards that are of worse quality silicon-wise, then Nvidia? This would certainly at least partially explain some of the vast differences in experience that AMD card owners have with the same models.

You should check it out on desktop. I still need to take the time and look into improving the mobile version of it.

Moore's Law Is Dead

I just paused the podcast to look at your gpu chart realized that the resolution of the picture was 600 by 384. Is there a place where I can download a higher resolution image of that chart?
