RADEON vs GeForce in 2022 – How are we feeling? (Die Shrink Telegrams)
Added 2022-09-06 20:50:54 +0000 UTCThis is an episode we knew we wanted to do at some point before Lovelace and RDNA 3 launched - How do we all feel about RADEON vs GeForce?
It's a quieter month (so far) on the Next Gen GPU rumor front, so now seems like a good time to take a step back, and discuss:
- What has Nvidia done well with Ampere? What should they have done better?
- What has RADEON done well with RDNA 2? What should they have done better?
- Has RADEON gained any mindshare this gen?
- What features make you buy RADEON? What features make you buy Nvidia?
- If an AMD card and an Nvidia card literally had the same performance and VRAM, which would probably buy? What would the "loser" in your answer need to do for you to switch sides next gen?
We aren't just here to talk about specs - a lot of this is meant to be viewed through the lens of mindshare, features, and what you typically get out of either a RADEON or GeForce product.

2022-09-08 17:33:59 +0000 UTC"What features make you buy RADEON?" Windows 7 support Windows 7 support Windows 7 support Windows 7 support Did I mention Windows 7 support? Also, better raster performance than Ampere. Fuck raytracing.

2022-09-07 18:45:21 +0000 UTCI have a hard time feeling any sympathy for NVIDIA bemoaning their current poor sales considering they just spent two years raking us over the coals. Personally I feel at least in the case of Nvidia, that they earned their current predicament. I will never believe they “tried” with all their might to funnel gpus to gamers and away from miners and have suspicions the “leaks” that enabled LHR cards to fully work were deliberately let out. I also find it hard to believe a company as large as Nvidia could not have applied pressure either directly or through the US government to force eBay to ban sales of products marked up over a certain percentage of MSRP, whatever that level may have been. Are their recent woes any comparison at all to the amount of money they have made over the previous years?

2022-09-07 13:35:56 +0000 UTCNice to know, thanks. I know when the nVidia one came out there were ludicrous demos of it cancelling vacuum cleaners, chainsaws, etc - I wonder how AMD compares. Perhaps it wasn't marketed as strongly or the influencers I follow didn't care for a follow up.

2022-09-07 06:38:04 +0000 UTCI feel mixed on who's going to win gaming this round. I originally thought that the rumored massive infinity cache would give Radeon a huge latency advantage to feed the beast of higher shader count and frequency. Now, the wide memory bus looks nice for Radeon, but I don't know if the MCM penalty will be compensated for adequately. I was 95/5 Radeon before, now I'm just 60/40.

2022-09-07 03:09:21 +0000 UTCAMD added noise cancelling too, so you can check that off of the Nvidia pros list. CUDA is pervasive, and for professionals, I agree, unless openGL/CL support massively improves, AMD loses there.

2022-09-07 03:05:39 +0000 UTCHey tom, why do you think people still have a perception that amd graphics are bad for streaming and other productivity related stuff. Since I got my 6900xt. My experience in the beginning with productivity related apps were bad. But it has been almost 2 and a half years now. And drivers related to productivity has gotten way better. OBS has integrated B-frames for amd that makes streaming way better and on the same quality levels at rtx cards with NVENC. Especially with talking heads still making judgement based on old benchmarks. As the Short Circuit video released today based on Corsair new laptop vs the G14 showcased. With Alex's prejudice towards the amd laptop in productivity.
2022-09-07 00:12:03 +0000 UTCG'day Tom. I sometimes feel hypocritical as I want others to support Radeon to keep competition alive (although I have next to no experience with their software/drivers/etc besides your comments). At the same time, I will likely continue to stick with Nvidia for CUDA (occasional video editing) and I wouldn't mind getting access to their RTX noise cancelling feature on my next card. One thing Nvidia needs to change is forcing me to sign into their GeForce Experience app each time I update drivers. It's bad enough I need to sign in at all, but at least allow me to have the credentials remembered as I only open it every few months to check for driver updates and then have to also open my password manager every time as well. Oh well, at least we don't have to restart Windows.

2022-09-06 23:54:02 +0000 UTCI feel like the awe of Nvidia's gaming experience still catches people including me as an enthusiast specially. I have an rx6600 but I want that better ty performance. I want the less compromised experience of dlss. Everytime I see something amd does I see nothing but second best even tho it's not that simple. I am an enthusiast at heart but not in my wallet.

2022-09-06 23:52:21 +0000 UTCI'm happy with what both sides have done. AMD continues to innovate and nip at NVidia's heels, while NVidia continues to grab for every advantage they can to stay ahead. FSR2 isn't as good as DLSS, but it doesn't have to be, it just has to be "good enough" to worry NVidia, and that's exactly what it is. As I mentioned on Discord in our conversation, I'd need significant gains in both RT and Raster for me to switch to AMD. And a knowledge that my games would "just work". I've used NVidia for quite some time, so it would be hard for me to switch. But for games like Cyberpunk and Starfield (whatever that requires) if I can get 25% more FPS in one vendor over the other I'd switch. So that all being said, I'm getting 55fps in Cyberpunk with all settings (including RT) maxed out fully on a 3090ti. If NVidia were to give me 75fps with a 4090 on those same settings I'd be happy. If they only gave me 65fps and a 7950xt gave me 75fps, that's something I'd seriously consider.

2022-09-06 23:51:56 +0000 UTCSup Tom, I have a GPU related question for you, along with the community. If you were in the market to purchase a graphics card from either brand, which benchmarks would be more appealing to see in the for sale listing? High FPS 1080p or more demanding lower FPS 4K? As a seller myself, Im curious as to what the people prefer. And yes, Im using your platform to increase my potential sales :)

2022-09-06 23:28:30 +0000 UTCI've always personally stuck with Nvidia GPUs for their driver stability, better gaming performance, and better encoding. That said, I feel like Nvidia really could have given their mid-range and high-end Ampere cards (RTX 3070 & 3080 SKUs) more VRAM. It seems like the 12GB frame buffer on my RTX 3080 Ti is starting to hit its limit for 4K gaming, and it would have been nice if I had the 16GB that AMD offers on their Navi 21 cards. If I was in the market to buy a card now, I probably would buy an RX 6900 XT over my RTX 3080 Ti. With Lovelace and Navi III, I would consider switching to AMD for my main PC if the 4K rasterization performance of the top model is around the same as an RTX 4090 with a lower power draw and at a lower price.

2022-09-06 23:21:31 +0000 UTCI have owned 3 AMD GPU's since 2020 and all have been stable and good products for my money; a 5600xt a 6800 and now a 6800XT. None have let me down and the only crashes or stability issues I have experienced have been in CP 2077. Considering there were places to get under the map and back up or jump through the wire framing of buildings and I just assumed I was Beta testing until patch 1.5 early this year , I really don't consider stability issues that game AMD related. Who ever can give me the most from what I am willing to spend in rasterization and VRAM for now. RT isn't a factor at all for me until the frame rate hit is 20% or less in native rendering. I don't stream, I am not a content creator so the only suite of software I care about is that which lets me tweak for the performance I want in games and AMD has that in Adrenaline. Who ever offers a free, bitrchin' spatula gets my money, honey.

2022-09-06 23:18:08 +0000 UTCI’ve always bought Nvidia….aside from that Intel GPU I bought years ago…ahem, we won’t talk about that. 😅 Seriously though AMD is for the first time getting my attention. The big thing for me is that the performance is on par with Nvidia, and now the features (FSR 2.0) are close to Nvidia as well. Although ray tracing is behind Nvidia I don’t have any games that use ray tracing right now, so its not a concern for me. What’s pushing me to AMD is power consumption and price. AMD seems to have an advantage there, and it’s pulling me away from Nvidia. I also game on Linux, so any Windows driver issues are not of concern to me. The open source Mesa driver is excellent! So, if the cards are the same performance I’ll probably go AMD for better efficiency.
