Discussing Alchemist and Upcoming Releases with Bryan Heemskerk
Added 2022-07-21 23:58:20 +0000 UTCBryan Heemskerk is a guest who has been on twice before - and every discussion has been a lively deep-dive into how Graphics Cards work, and what makes them actually run games well. This week he is coming on to discuss what is likely going on with Intel Alchemist - Is it a fatal flaw in the hardware? Bad drivers? Both?
We will also undoubtedly discuss Zen 4, Raptor Lake, RDNA 3, Lovelace, Switch 2, and other Game Developer and Gaming Hardware subjects depending on what you ask us below!
You have 16 hours - Until Noon US Central Time on 7/22 to submit your comments and questions below. Be concise (no novels!), use good grammar, and be respectful to be considered!

During the shortages, we've heard that NVIDIA sold cards to miners, exacerbating shortages for gamers. Do we know if NVIDIA increased pricing when selling to AIBs during the pandemic (besides creating new variants with higher prices)? If they didn't, and AIBs and distributors and scalpers profited from demand outweighing supply, it almost seems unfair for them to then demand rebates from NVIDIA (can't believe I'm saying that) to keep selling the remaining 3000 series.

2022-07-23 06:32:38 +0000 UTCHi Bryan and Tom, Now that Intel dgpus are coming, I hope at some point, how important it is for game developers to get 3rd viewpoint to test their game? Is it more work and extra effort in QA or welcome "standardization" viewpoint showing potential flaws in APIs, standards and mere industry ways of doing things?

2022-07-22 17:12:00 +0000 UTCHi Bryan and Tom, Last time Bryan was anxious that they cant get any gpus to studio to make game in newest hardware... has situation improved?

2022-07-22 17:10:34 +0000 UTCHi guys, all the hype I hear about UE5 makes it seem like the most revolutionary technical thing to ever happen to gaming. Does this happen around every big launch or is this one bigger than typical, and do you think it'll live up to the hype?

2022-07-22 17:07:00 +0000 UTCHey I keep hearing devs are not too found with the series s hardware, so my question is what exactly are we potentially losing on other on platforms. I ask as I do know multi platform games target lowest common hardware and once last gen games stop releasing series s will be that.

2022-07-22 11:41:09 +0000 UTCHi Tom and Brian, what do you think would be the incentive(s) for devs to optimize their games/apps for intel’s GPUs given that they will likely gain very little market share this generation?
2022-07-22 02:26:43 +0000 UTCHello Tom and Brian, from a developers standpoint how powerful are the current Gen of CPU’s? With i3’s essentially being 8700k’s and soon not too far off ninth Gen levels of performance. Where do you even start to leverage that amount of performance if the lowest SKU is that strong and what can you do going forward to make games better than they are now?

2022-07-22 01:52:38 +0000 UTCTop of the morning, 'gents! What are your current thoughts on the state of ARM's Mali GPU's? Is there any hope for truly good looking games on Android or a decent Snapdragon Windows laptop within the next two to three years? My best wishes to Reese! Dogs are amazing

2022-07-22 01:29:51 +0000 UTCHello Tom and Bryan! Without a doubt, the Alchemist launch is not without it's Achilles heel, whatever that may be. In a video with Linus(of LinusTechTips) about the A770, he explained that the performance, or lack thereof, is mostly due to DirectX12 support, and any title using a previous version of DirectX is likely to not fully utilize the Alchemist card. While I appreciate the background information and I like to see the effort Intel is making to set expectations, I wonder if this is merely an attempt to save face at an underwhelming product. Or maybe, Intel is right and making graphics cards and good drivers is hard without experience. What do you(both of you) think? Intel lazy? Or GPU hard?
2022-07-22 01:16:16 +0000 UTCHello gentlemen, hope you're finding all the ways to do well in all of *large hand gesture* this. My bests to Reese. On to the question... What do you think about the fact that any legitimate source about the Switch "Plus" dried up a bit over a year ago? I feel like a lot of people assumed a Switch revision was shelved or canceled because of supply issues, but those supply issue would have effected a base Switch just as much as a upgraded model--which they could have sold for more, so I don't know that I ever bought that theory... And doing the OLED model increased other component prices as well as shipping without the savings of a smaller process node. Soooo... what do you think happened? Do you think Nintendo just sent out Orin kits so developers could tool around with dlss as a test? And everyone got too excited about it? Do you think they had a "pro" model that they pulled because the Steam Deck was more powerful? Or do you think there was something renegotiated with Nvidia and ordering chips? Perhaps Nvidia wanted their chip capacity for Ampere cards during the mining craze and offered Nintendo a more advanced chip at a discount as long as Nintendo delayed their upgraded console to after the market peak? Sorry. Very long question with a lot of my own thoughts. Please cut as you see fit.
