I never had a horse in hand-held gaming; my parents would never buy any gaming console and I sold GI-Joe and Transformers to buy my NES as my parents put me in charge of financing that venture. Hand-held was just out of the range my paper route could provide in the late 80's early 90's. Never knew so many hand-helds came and went, a real treat to listen to and research.
