The Past & Future of VR with an Oculus Engineer - Telegrams for Guests

Broken Silicon's next guest will be an Engineer that works on Oculus Tech at Meta.  This is someone with extensive gaming hardware and software knowledge who can speak in-depth about the challenges of building a product for gaming.

Feel free to ask us about PS VR2, Oculus Headsets, Index, and other upcoming VR headsets.  Standard gaming hardware questions are welcomed too regarding recent Intel/AMD/Nvidia/PlayStation/XBOX/Apple/ARM rumors and upcoming releases!

You have 36 hours to submit questions (Till Friday Morning)!  Just make sure you use good grammar, put thought into your question, and be as concise as possible.

I understand if its not possible but can you disclose any details regarding the Oculus Quest 3 or Project Cambria? Do you think the recent shortage would affect the release of these upcoming devices like it has affected the release of the PS5 and Xbox Series S? Thank you!

Hello Tom and Guest. I have three question on the same subject. Since VR pushes way more the need for higher resolution, what place does FSR and DLSS take in current VR Title development and in the near future? How much do you think VR titles are being held back by hardware not strong enough to properly run them with better graphics and Framerate. Do you think the new generation of of gpu from AMD and Nvidia are going to help develop the VR ecosystem since better price/performance could help raise the minimum requirements of titles.

What new thing do you think the ps6 will bring? Like for example ps3 brought HD, ps5 brought super fast SSD.

When will we again see OLED or something with better contrast & darks than LCD in a headset? Is there a way to make video pass-through or passthrough-AR feel more natural? Thanks!

Hello Tom and Guest, VR is an interesting mode for gaming, in concept. But are software developers companies and programmers looking at larger scale applications of the tech beyond a more realer-er way to get sniped through 14 buildings and a rock? Is there interest in using VR as teaching tool for students in schools? Say being able to tour the Louvre, the Colosseum in Rome, take tour of the ISS or a even travel with a NASA rover on Mars? It seems an amazing opportunity to engage children and connect them more with the nebulous World at large?

Im literally putting on my tinfoil with this question but how much of a concern do you have with a computer strapped to your head! If in the future vr and ar headsets have the hardware in the headset are we playing with fire? Im worried because of a large battery and RF antenna so close to the brain for long periods of time. P.S. i do play a lot vr video games mostly modded skyrim vr.

Hello Tom and Mysterious Engineer, my question is simple; do you think the PSVR2 will push VR into the mainstream? I've tried multiple versions of VR (HTC Vive, Oculus and PSVR1) and some games are good but most are just...okay. Will PSVR2 bring the much needed high quality headset at a more consumer friendly pricing to get developers interested in VR? It seems like it'll almost always remain as a supplemental type of gaming if it does not have mass adoption. Bonus Question: On the PC front of VR, will Zen 4/Raptorlake and RDNA 3/Lovelace make much of a difference or still hamstrung by lowest common denominator type thing? Thanks.

I've been completely uninterested in VR based on what I've seen over the years. What do you think VR has to offer for a "flatscreen traditionalist" like me? Why should it translate into better "experiences"?

Hi Tom and Guest, VR seems to be great for racing games and games like beatsaber from what I understand. But in first person games the 'walking' mechanic is probably the hardest part to get right. Are there better solutions coming, do you think there are games that have cracked this puzzle? Cheers, Gus

Gus

Hey Tom and Guest, how do you think VR will change the gaming industry and different experiences VR can provided besides just First Person. A lot of people are focused on first person experiences in VR but I'm more focused on the over the shoulder 3rd Person view like in Dead Space and Resident Evil 4. It will feel like you are a camera man following someone into a haunted house.

Hi Tom and guest, with the push for stand alone headsets like the quest, what role if any will PCs continue to play in the future? At what point will things like oculus link not be necessary?

Tom bringing up apple in the discord got me to thinking. What are the non gaming related use cases for VR, and do you see this impacting gaming through wider adoption and economies of scale? What is keeping this tech from widespread adoption currently?
