Early AMD RSR Thoughts - Last Minute Die Shrink Telegrams
Added 2022-03-21 01:22:14 +0000 UTCAMD's RSR is out....what do you guys think? Good? Bad? Meh? We are particularly interested in getting the opinions of people who tried it...or at least tried to try it...
Feel free to throw in expectations on DLSS 2.3 and FSR 2.0 below as well!
We record in 30 minutes, so put it down below NOW! Sorry for the short notice, but we just realized now is truly the best time to do it since Broken Silicon comes out later than usual this week, and we want to give you something to fill the gap!

I have a 6700 XT Red Devil and a 4k 60Hz monitor. I turned on RSR in Elden Ring chose 3200x1800 to 3840x2160. I have settings turned up to nearly max and it took my average fps from 56.4 to 60.2. The game plays buttery smooth now and it looks as good with it on as with it off. Visually to me there is virtually no difference between RSR and native with my set up and settings in that game. I've also tried it out in a few other titles and so far have had the same results. I really like RSR honestly. I also have tried it on another PC in my house that has a 5700 xt Red Devil and another 4k 60Hz monitor and have had very similar results for FPS improvement but had to adjust resolution a bit lower to 1440p and there is a very slight decrease in visual fidelity but only in certain instances and not very often either, so far in my experience. I can't wait to see what FSR 2.0 can possibly improve from RSR, maybe in FSR 2.0 supported games the 5700 xt can utilize 1800p to 2160p....
2022-03-22 19:12:08 +0000 UTCHey guys, Interesting to see FSR 2.0 isn’t using deep learning. My thoughts are that deep learning will eventually dominate in terms of performance for image reconstruction however it presents as a larger learning curve for the engineering team. Long term I expect AMD to also adopt a neural network in the reconstruction pipeline. What are your thoughts on this? Doron

2022-03-21 13:28:22 +0000 UTCI have a 6700xt, and tried RSR on Halo, but couldn't get it to work. Have a 1440p monitor and lowered the resolution to 1080 but it still said to lower the resolution, so i dropped it all the way down but still no good. Then tried it on FinalFantasy14 and it looks "alllllmost" as good as native but my performance shot over 250fps!! Which is waaay overkill for that game. Going to tinker with it some more on other games. Interesting thus far.

2022-03-21 02:56:07 +0000 UTCWhile I unfortunately have not tried RSR, it's because I can't. I really hope for the driver level support to extend for cards earlier than RDNA 1 so I can try it effectively on my 4500u laptop; I've looked at reviews and think it's pretty nice. I've also tried Magpie to kind of tunnel FSR through any apps and I like it, but there's too much overhead on it for being any effective use to me; the results look pretty good since RSR would essentially look the same but be much more efficient and thus effective + useful.

2022-03-21 01:56:16 +0000 UTCI really like it, it looks good enough that I don't miss being at native res (1440p on 4k). It lets me play at higher settings with better framerates. I was thinking to myself "if you told me that was 4k, I could believe you". Being shown both, it's obvious which is native, but it works on every game, and allows the built in anti aliasing to be enabled too, which is a bonus. I will always use it.

2022-03-21 01:46:13 +0000 UTCI've tested RSR a couple of days ago on my 6800 XT (it's as fast as any 6900 XT that's not an XTXH btw) and was really blown away by two things: 1. How easy it is to implement/use in many games. All I needed to do was ensure my game was in exclusive Fullscreen mode, not windowed, and lower the in-game resolution. With RSR enabled in global settings, I'd get a pop-up stating RSR is enabled/disabled, if FidelityFX CAS/CACAO is supported, or if FSR is already supported by the game. I think the only issue I had was with The Division, which acted weird when lowering its resolution in exclusive Fullscreen mode. Not an RSR issue, as I've experienced this before FSR was even a thing. 2. Image quality. I've lowered some games' in-game resolution to 1080p from 4K and saw little visual impact with quite a jump in frame rate. No, I don't realistically use that setting, but just wanted to see how far I could go before being able to notice a major visual downgrade. This felt like FSR balanced at worst, FSR Quality at best. Running in-game resolution from 1440p to 1800p effectively boosted frames with a near-imperceptible loss in image quality. 1440p to 4K is like FSR Quality, while 1620p to 1800p feel like FSR Ultra Quality mode.I only noticed HUD elements looking softer and a touch larger at lower in-game resolutions, especially once I went to 1440p or lower. There will be many updates to come, but I'm going to be honest: RSR was needed for AMD to not keep throwing a bone at Nvidia for a feature that should be a kind of "competitor" to Nvidia's exclusive DLSS. With this driver-level feature, AMD's secured what seems like quite a decent victory over NvIdIa, but we shall see over the next few months. Also, I've noticed games that supported FSR did not have an RSR toggle in Adrenalin, which makes perfect sense to me. Horizon Zero Dawn is one of those games in my testing. Side note: I expect FSR 2.0 to also be implemented in an RSR update. Right now, AMD just needs to make sure RSR doesn't break games or elements in games, as well as Adrenalin itself. This is absolutely a step in the right direction. It's great for the longevity of AMD products such as desktop GPUs and especially laptops. Want 4K120 in a more demanding game? Your N21 GPU will get that while saving as much as 40% power doing so. Want to get 4K60 on that 6700 XT (not too difficult natively) or 6600 XT (a bit tougher to achieve natively)? Consider it done. 6800M can't go as fast as it can because of hardware-level issues preventing display output to switch to the dGPU? EZ fix and you'll also be able to push that 1080p display's 300Hz refresh rate. Can't wait to see RSR breathe new life into older Radeon GPUs, too.

2022-03-21 01:37:20 +0000 UTCI personally really like RSR, I don’t notice a major difference in visual quality. I can’t wait for the double standard to appear when everyone should enable DLSS no matter what, but you can’t use RSR. My question is do you think AMD is going to make FSR 2.0 at the driver like, a RSR 2.0 if you will?

2022-03-21 01:36:55 +0000 UTCHey Tom and Dan, why do you think AMD isn’t using AI/machine learning in FSR. Does AMD not have the expertise in-house to implement upscaling with AI or is AI not necessary to pull off good upscaling?
2022-03-21 01:36:55 +0000 UTCmany tech writers and media expected AMD's upscale technology( FSR )competitor to at least match NVidia's DLSS. Will RSR or FSR2 finally end this argument and will it finally blunt one of the few arguments NVidia has left to buying NVidia?

2022-03-21 01:30:38 +0000 UTCHey Tom and Dan, haven't really used RSR yet been grinding Elden Ring, I have a 6900XT so I can easily play it at 4k 60fps but I'm interested in the FSR 2.0 and how they will extend the longevity of graphics card and also gaming consoles. Do you think that FSR will allow the PS5 and Xbox Series X to last a little longer than what most expected and do you think it may extend this generation by a year or 2 especially wheb the pro version of the consoles come out?
