Die Shrink 58: AM1, AMD’s Ultimate Budget Platform

AMD's AM1 platform was an insane development for “Ultra Budget” Builders of the time.  It allowed for builds that roughly matched (then) current gen console CPU performance at crazy low prices, and occupied a segment we hope things like AMD Monet or some Intel Gracemont-only architecture can occupy again.

The 5700g is $199 at microcenter post alderlake launch. Good call.

That Pentium "recommendation era" shows for me flipside, not so pleasant side of PCMR: people lie to get you onboard and then you get disappointed in a year. It is better what one shop did in PUBG heyday: promis machine capable of x fps running PUBG and then warranty for that.

Interesting episode it's odd to see that some processors back legit wouldn't run games based on number of cores and people are saying that 4 cores aren't enough because it won't run all things maxed out. While not that long ago some clu could just not even run the game!

Man, this was unexpected, but I enjoyed the topic immensely especially since I've used an a6-1450 (temash) netbook as a mobile typewriter and occasional mobile emulator for the past 7-8years. I upgraded the HDD to a 128 SSD, gave it 8 gigs of ram, and ran a Linux distro on it (windows 8 era). Battery life was also acceptable at 5-7 hours depending on the workload which was more than enough for me. Even had a chance to replace the battery around the 3rd to 4th year mark. Best $300 I've spent by far and I wish amd and intel would do something similar again. The New Celeron/pentium (but doesn't seem to push performance past kabini) and amd's lower end Ryzen (3050e) seems to be similar in price and performance. Again, kudos Tom and Dan!

"Kabini Tom & Jaguar Dan" was a good one. Also the accents from England. :D
