Die Shrink 51: SteamOS Hype, Successes, and Failures

Tom & Dan discuss the SteamOS launch from nearly a decade ago! The hype, the "innovative" controller, the motivations at VALVE, and if it was an overall success...or not...
Two quick thoughts:
SteamOS and Steam Deck: I pray it improves the gaming situation on Linux and I pray that it's a seamless experience, but I just want to point out the casual user / lay-person is ill-equiped to handle PC gaming even on Windows. I say that because I have worked with engineers(!) who feel troubleshooting the little things on Windows is enough to never game on a PC. If you're not equipped to troubleshoot on Windows, you sure as hell won't be able to troubleshoot Linux. Because of this I think the mass appeal will be limited.
Windows 11: This one really came in under the radar for me and I was not expecting it. I honestly think the most impressive things Microsoft has done with Windows over the years have been under the hood which is what makes the Windows 11 reveal so frustrating as most of the changes reavealed were purely superficial. Aesthetically and organizationally, I think Windows has been a mess since Window 8, although I did like the OS under the hood. I think Windows 11 is an opportunity to make more changes under the hood, perhaps some that fundamentally change security, the way the kernel works, and the way APIs interact with developers. The UI aspect is simply what they need to show first to appeal to the masses. I try to remind people all the time to not to mistake "unfamiliar" with "difficult". I don't mind a UI changing as long as it's decently thought out. What I don't like is the state of Windows now. Things being split between the legacy control panel and the settings app is an absolute mess which is both unfamiliar AND difficult for most.
I will hold judgement on Win 11 until I see more what's going on under the hood. If they don't take this opportunity to make bold changes, I will be very disappointed if it's solely a facelift. There is no reason they couldn't have just rolled that into Win10.
EDIT: Oh and the only good thing Games For Windows ever did was mandate that games support the Xbox controller and that the interface adapt to show you the actual buttons when one was connected, which thankfully is now common practice as a result.

You are putting down win 11 a lot. Install and form an opinion based on it real and your own thoughts. Why are judging a video presentation?
