Console hardware was definitely weird at the time. One thing that I'm surprised wasn't mentioned more during the discussions was the fact that both the Cell and Xenon in the PS3 and Xbox360 respectively were IBM PowerPC ISAs. If you throw Wii into the mix, that makes every console during the era PowerPC, which is why modern consoles rely on emulation for backward-compatibility.
