Die Shrink Telegrams - Immediate Reactions to AMD's 10/8 Show

Comments

Hi Tom. Were you as disappointed as I was that the CPU's are $50 more at launch than their Zen 2 counterparts. The most disappointing was the 5800x at $450 because there is no non x sku's for better values.

Brian Steiner

The amd video was corny and lame up until 9min and 6 sec. Sure, the 3950x is amazing like it is pretty dope but I built a 3800x /16gb 1th rx490 for a fr8end and had just as much fun playing call of duty and total war. I think amds real accomplishment for 2019 was delivering a full desktop for 1000 that literally any college debtor can buy and be happy in 3 years. I get the bringing 32 mb kf direct ca he to every core is huge , but it doesn't seem like the cpu equivalent of direct fuel injection for the expected performance boost. Like I want to belive but this is one of those " expect a slight dissapointment but otherwise perfectly practical products. the great thing about the 3950x is you can drop it in a laptop so it'll age amazingly if amd isn't hype. 4.8ghz boost is pretty great as that will likely be the engine of the 8 core inbuikd in 2 years. As far as taking intel market share, well its not 5 ghz. Its not 5.2 but im sure there are ways to do stupid cpu boosts for whatever reason. As someone with a 16core, , if the 5950x doesn't do 5.2 its not ground breaking, it's just a game boy SP , to the advance.19%is good but call me petty, I want to see 25% because 8ntel can afford to drag ass. Amd is only cool whenever the push the envelope. 14:44 that provides hope for theb16 core variant but Im really hoping they have a 24 that is just insane. 28% there we fucking go AMD, thats something to brag about. Make my strategy games play pretty in 4k finally!26% increase and I can keep the same pc ? Ok 3950x lap top here I come when they drop that stimulus lol. A score of 631 is impressive but its like having the world's best cricket team in the Olympics. For my part, im excited for the 6000 series as 2019 to 2021 will hopefully push the 8 core over the big 5gb hump. 16:56 Amd sound aloy like Honda riders at the racetrack explaining why there motors can be 15hp less for mequivalent displacement and still be fast. We behead 5 for years, if AIOs can get these to 5 then cool but without 5 , I have no impulse incentive. 17 :16 1080p is irrelevant. Im sure these are amazing improvements but there underwhelming for the built up hype. The 5800x willfor 500 better price drop 70 bucks in the first 6 months. Otherwise this inflation aint cutting it. 20:40. The 16 core finally up to 4.9. Hmm this is technically 5 ghz with an overclock and maybe a good fan? Feels like a narrow in. Like i can honestly wait another year for AMD to comfortably cross 5ghz for the halo product. 21:01 slow clap for AMD not buying but ide recommended. 23:26 4k looks clear but im not impressed. I would need to see 4k 120 to 144 to be sold. Ok 88fps in Cod is a big improvement. They get a back pat but I would need to see numbers approving 110 to 120 to make it a must have impulse for me. Finished the video, im good till 2021 .granted I have your pc basically and amd just didn't outshine the magic of 2019. By odd numbered ryzen products if you want to be impressed is the take away. Yut yet!

Michael Costa

This is it. Zen 4 will be Am5

Dominik Koc

Making an X670 really makes no sense if the X570 is "Optimized" for Zen3 AM4 as a socket is EOL after Zen3 anyways. No upgrade path.

Stephan Hart

I'm disappointed that we aren't getting a new chipset. Buying x570 this late in its life cycle is not something I want to do but I'll definitely be getting a 5950x anyway.

Bondsmith

I'm curious on the performance of the GPU that was announced. Brad Charkus (idk about spelling) on PCworld's show said AMD called him to tell him they were including big navi performance benchmarks. He also said that when he asked about which specific sku this was, AMD wouldn't tell him. Do you think those performance numbers are from the top die or is there one even higher? AMD being so tight lipped about what card those numbers came from has me wonder if this wasn't the top card. Do you have any insight to share? Another interesting point, Brad also said that AMD must be confident in their GPU if they were willing to show benchmarks at 4k ultra because Nvidia's architecture is engineered to keep the shaders fed when 4k gaming but performance actually falls off at resolutions below 4k. Perhaps we will see AMD have better 1440p coming cards while also being competitive in 4k? Thanks for all the work you do to keep us informed and entertained. And thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Zackary Schull

People will be mad all the time :)

People mad about the 5600X pricing need to realize that it probably outruns a 3700X in virtually everything and is cheaper.

John Dorman

On the topic of stock levels... Since AMD has a browser built into AMD Radeon Software, what if they locked "early" pre-orders of RDNA2 to people running AMD cards? Verify against the GPU model and all. Could be a way to stop the GPU scalpers and clear out old stock of Polaris...? Thoughts?

extramossy

I'm not thrilled by the price hike, but that's Intel's fault. They had to drop prices to stay competitive with 10th gen and just didn't Now AMD gets to be the performance leader, the budget option and the price to performance champ. 11th gen looks like a wash, but hopefully they at least drop prices if they're going to put it on the incredibly well worn 14nm ++++.

Durmij

I felt two things during the stream: 1) The urge to get a 5900X and possibly a 5950X despite owning two 3900X builds. 2) The urge to splurge on top RDNA 2 GPUs. That's right, more than one. November's going to be an amazing month: New Xboxes, PS5s, Zen 3, and likely RDNA 2. As hyped as I am, I also know I'm gonna have to stack several 3x3 pallets over 4 feet tall for the consoles starting around the week of the 25th of October. I'm also going to be hunting for Zen 3 or RDNA 2, likely the latter first. Due to COVID-19 messing up logistics plus the consoles launching, my location's been getting increasingly larger shipments earlier than usual. Oh, and Oculus Quest 2 stockpiling started yesterday (Wednesday the 7th) which shall also continue for another week. Oof.

The Immortal Cameraman

My question is: why everyone assumes the GPU that was teased is the top RDNA2 SKU? It's Navi21 aka Big Navi that's all we know really. Quote from pcworld article "Herkelman stressed that AMD didn’t state which Radeon RX 6000 graphics card ran these benchmarks." Why would Herkelman stress that if this was indeed the absolute best AMD can do. This is teasing, AMD wouldn't show all they have 20 days from their actual event.

Nobody will stop using 1080p for benchmarking cpus anytime soon. For cpu's it removes other limiting factors so you can see a real result for cpu performance to make comparisons to other products. As you go up in resolution/quality you stop measuring the CPU and start measuring other components. For GPU's it's not going away either, since in limited scenarios there will always be people that think going from 1080p 240hz to 1080p 360hz will make them a better gamer. Doesn't really showcase new technology in current gen gpus, but at least it gives an idea of the horsepower under the hood.

Those "Big" Navi benchmarks sure look convincing, but are they jebaits? Also the HUGE price increase for the 8 core part makes it hard to swallow. Perhaps with a bit of BCLK it could reach the fabled 5Ghz.

Eduardo Villanueva

AMD talked about 1080p performance today in the presentation, and 4k obviously, as basically every manufacturer does. With the majority of gamers either already making the jump or starting to transition from 1080p to 1440p, when do you think 1440p will become the leading performance indicator used by manufacturers?

MyNameIsCrease

You shouldn't. In fact, you should be happy you have an Intel motherboard. The 5900x and even the 5950x don't have a significant increase in performance compared to the i9-10900k except in some games. That means 11th gen i9 will most likely have better numbers by the time it rolls out, so you'll have a motherboard you can stick that CPU in at least.

Anything you know/can say about how long AM4 will still last us? Is it worthwhile to get a 570 motherboard if I don’t have one yet? When is the last upgrade to an AM4 cpu expected to be released?

Very disappointed tbh. Sure, the Ryzen 9 is a tad bit better than the i9-10900k in some games, the difference is not very significant and this just goes on to show that the 11th gen intel processors will most likely beat Ryzen AGAIN in a few months time. With all the hype surrounding Zen 3, I was expecting something far more better. And for crying out loud, when will they STOP USING 1080p for benchmarking man. Don't even get me started with the Radeon 6000 'sneak peek'. Performance does not come anywhere CLOSE to the 3080. All hype is pretty much dead at this point. Not such a good year for hardware after all...

I’m excited for the new chips, the performance improvements sound good on paper. The price bump is a little disappointing but they did earn it if their performance claims are true. Bummed at having to wait another month to actually get my hands on one, and a little bummed at how low the clocks stayed. Side note- I just heard about AMD link, do you have any thoughts on it? How does it perform?

Erik-Anders Nielsen

The recurring point to me was reducing memory latency even further with Zen 3, which games benefit from. Also, I am interested in learning more about the increased bandwidth to the branch predictor aka "Zero Bubble" Branch Prediction to increase performance.

Steven M

Considering the market share of the Threadripper in HEDT and the problems of Intel do you think that we will see 5000 Threadripper till the end of the year or AMD will wait a little bit more like Q1 2021?Also do you think that ZEN 3 will age well?

Valko Milev

Not exactly keen on the slight power bumps (mostly because being Australian, the difference is amplified). But at least I am happy about the launch, some info got confirmed but a lot of lacking. The "pathway" for the future really isn't talked about like when Ryzen was launched, not a lot of future projection of where they are going even beyond Zen 4. Was hoping for at least something since it felt like they were going to show us the next steps of their plans. Oh well.

Treble Sketch

As most here have mentioned, I am also a bit disappointed of todays presentation. I think the price increase of Zen 3 almost nullifies its IPC gains and Big Navi also "only" stacks up with a RTX 3080 (though that's more then allot of people expected). I guess it has become the norm that we expect AMD to pull out a Renoir on every presentation. Speaking of, why do you think AMD skipped the 4000 naming scheme? Is renoir coming to desktop?

A little while ago (maybe a year or so) there was a lot of discussion in the community and by yourself, if AMD needing time to milk so we can get long term competition, do you still believe this with the launch of Zen 3?

PotatoesAreLyfe

Brad from PCWorld said the performance numbers AMD showcased for Big Navi were in line with an RTX 3080 paired with an i9 10900k. Wonder if that was the XT or XTX that AMD showcased

no hint on raytracing? is that weird?

Id say probably because NVIDIA used it as a benchmark on launch as well, and this rx6000 gpu seems slightly faster than the 3080 in this particular game

With Zen 3 having +$50 price increase and it's IPC improvements compared to it's Zen 2 counterparts, will this make Intel's Rocket Lake in Q1 2021 be the "value" option for the first time in decades or will Rocket Lake force AMD to bring Zen 3 prices to Zen 2 prices?

MultiNati

I still don’t think BL3 is the best game to showcase “Big Navi”

Kameron Alexander

My immediate response to the news is that the performance is impressive but they seem to be just slightly better than stock intel with way better efficiency. My problem is that efficiency does not matter that much to most gamers and AMD added an additional $50 on top of no non-X cpus.

AdanFS

How's the spoilered GPU performance compared to Ampere?

digital_dodo

Sup Tom, I’d say that this new generation was what I was expecting for months ~25% performance increase . But I’m disappointed in the lack of “non-X” SKU’s and the $50 price hike. I was excited to upgrade from my Haswell/1070 system early next year. I wanted to double my performance at a similar price so I can have the option to later get a 4K or OLED monitor but I might just go for Zen 2 with a stronger gpu or wait for Zen 4. Paul is right in saying we should demand lower prices.

Kameron Alexander

Availability is going to be the key to this launch. I am confident that AMD will have stock ready for November. That being said, this generation is what I believe to be a statement from AMD. They managed a significant performance jump on the same process node while not touching power. The idea of a unified cache is great, we need to see some independent verification of its actual impact though. The rearchitecting of the core is also a great thing to see. Its powerful to be able to come in and say 'we fixed the latency issues by adding and improving LD/ST'. In addition, they made ALUs wider. This is not just some kind of clock bump/ increment arch. This is entirely new and I cannot wait to see this sent to 5nm with even more improvements.

Dan Allman

Mostly an improvement in IPC because of Cache that will get those 5 FPS everyone is crazy about? Happy with my 3950x and my next build will be Threadripper. So interested to see how latency improvement does with the TR 5000 series.

Austin Baldino

Finally they're in the lead again. Can't wait for Intel to pull of some garbage

Meritorius

Still waiting to see what kinds of changes they made inside the cores...

qhfreddy

What do you think about AMD going all in on 5800X as an 8 core, vs the rumored 10 core that was floated? I know part of it is trying to keep the naming and pricing scheme intact, but Ryzen #800X as an 8 core has historically been pretty mediocre price performance vs the supposedly worse #700X 8 core SKUs.

Cleansweep

The 450$ eight core is a hard pill to swallow Though Zen2 is almost dirt cheap already and will probably fall in price even more. I hope they at least bundle their cooler again (unlike with the XT chips...)

Sandro Evertz

I liked the detail in the chart where they had -3% improvement (I believe it was Battlefield V). I take this as AMD's attempt of being transparent and admitting that some games do not benefit from the CPU improvements. Thoughts?

I will say I don’t understand why they used BL3 as a “benchmark” given how it is not a great benchmark, and they didn’t show any metrics on screen during the stuttery and aliasing video

What are your thoughts of the overall conference? What are the benefits of 5000 series over the 3000 and the cons of 5000 in a summary format? With the teaser of Radeon 6000 series, any thoughts so far?

DeusNightFire

$379 Ryzen 5700X when? Months after November launch? Once they finish selling off Zen2 stock? Is RDNA2 Big Navi a 1440p card that hits bandwidth problems at 4k? Or will we see them stay as a value proposition versus Nvidia, as opposed to their shift with their pricing of CPUs?

Bow to the masters 😎

What about the big Navi sneak peak, I think what a lot of people don’t realize is that that beginning sequence in Borderlands 3 benchmark is known to stutter.

John DeLuca

The small price hike is to be expected. The 5700x will come, looking at that stack, there’s space for that CPU there, and space for a 200-250 chip. If the claimed 20-30% gaming increase is true, I’m impressed. Personally more interested in the RX6000 GPU’s though as I don’t feel a need to upgrade from a 3700x yet.

Danny

Performance seems good but I really don't like the prices.

Was originally going to hold out for 3090 and 5900x before anything had been officially released, but now I’m just thinking about waiting for a 3080 20gb and getting a 5950x for 4k and 1080p gaming across two different monitors. Figure the price delta won’t be that much different.

I wonder how much the GPU scores of Big Navi are helped by the better Zen 3 Ryzen CPU.. 5-10%?

I like what I see, would love to know how non-X skus will be priced if they exist. Also, the RDNA2 stuff looked quite solid - I'm in the market for a new GPU next year and the top factor for me atm is a DLSS competitor though.

Is the X parts only at launch purely meant to increase margin, or also meant to help discourage people who are on the fence about upgrading from buying at launch to minimize supply issues?

TSPCFS

I expect AMD to gain another solid chunk of market share given what they've shown us.

Prices seem high though

TransTechGirl

I wonder what would be the good chip to buy for the long run? The 5900X over 5800X seems decent, but is the 5950X makes sense other than the bragging rights? and if the 5950X is already like this, I wonder what will happen to the XT CPUs, or even Threadripper?

After everything that has been said about RDNA2, what are your thoughts about the benchmarks that Lisa Su teased?

Do you think we will see the release of new X570 Motherboards coming out due to the release of Zen 3?

I'm pretty happy with a 19% IPC improvement.

TransTechGirl

Charlie @ S|A has said not EUV. Don't think there is an official source on it :(

TSPCFS

The Video card looked underwhelming. The price hikes are sad but the 5900X is less than a 10900K and better, so its understandable. No 5700X? Eat shit AMD.

Matthew Lane

I'm REALLY regretting my July 10900K build. :(

Matthew Griffin

Very much wondering the overclocking potential, especially given the TDP didn’t change

After seeing price hikes from amd, can't believe I'm saying this but we need Intel to come back strong, competition is the best thing in the world and amd seemingly has none for the time being.

Alex Smith

Does Intel have any chance of a good response?

Does AMD saying it’s on the same node means there are no EUV Layers? No 7N+?

John DeLuca
