End of Month Loose Ends: July 2020

Another month is over, and thus on the afternoon of 8/2/2020 I will be answering questions live regarding everything that has been discussed this month.

YOU are my patrons - put any questions you have below.  If they are thoughtful, well written, and interesting I may just get to them!

With AMD and Ryzen starting to get more market share, how long do you think before EVGA creates an AMD motherboard?

Right after this successful venture, let's all sing a song to make climate change skadaddle!

Do you believe that the Hopper architecture is the revolution in GPUs we will all be looking for?

Hey Tom, hope you are well. I've been increasingly sadded and frustrated by how much the tribalism of the "fanboys" (Sony, Xbox, AMD, Nvidia, etc) does have an impact by limiting rational and educated conversations on gaming/tech. In particular, sometimes I get the feeling on some of your podcasts / videos that you "hold back" on some comments for fear of fanboy backlash. So to educate people, could you please speak a little bit about why fanboys make a disservice to themselves if they reach fanatic lines of thinking and how much better informed tech purchases can be if you aren't a fanboy and take some time to analyse the products you are looking to buy. Thank you for all your work.

I've been thinking a lot about prices recently with where the consoles are going to be in terms of price to perf and how it will impact the GPU prices. If both consoles are going to be in the RTX 2080 to 2080 Ti performance bracket (maybe even a little better) for $500-ish, does that mean that AMD will release a similar performance card at that same price or lower? What would be the impact it would have on the GPU market? Thanks in advance.

What's you thoughts on next gen consoles dlss (directml?) Implementation? Seems like Xbox is trying to push native 4k which is weird since they would still be gpu bound? so even with 900 more cu's there wouldn't be a performance difference between the Consoles in that respect, but I see Sony taking a multi attack strategy to gain performance with kraken, unified memory pool, 2.25 frequency, and ssd. Your thoughts?

With the new GPUs from AMD and Nvidia having TDPs in the 300 to 375 watt range, what do you expect the cooling solutions to use to keep noise down while keeping the GPUs from throttling? Nvidia and AMD do not want to be like the Fermi cards that were hot and loud.

We all know the next GPU's, consoles are going to be big, and exciting, but there is one thing that no one is really talking about that should be addressed for everyone waiting for the next GPUs . What do you think the availability will be like and what SKU's will be launching? Are these going to be LIVE launches or Paper launches? If I sold my video card now for top dollar, how long would I be stuck before I could actually get my hands on a new GPU?

I know you don't generally discuss stocks and mentioned you have divested to stay unbiased, but how do you much growth do you expect to see in AMD's stock over the next 2-3 years? Any small-to-medium companies you think are worth highlighting as likely to grow in that same timeframe? Lastly, how do you see things shaking out for the other big players (Nvidia. Intel, MS, apple, Sony, etc)?

Tom: Your thoughts on Xbox Game Pass in its current form and future form? The biggest mic drop for Xbox on the last game reveal wasn't the game list, or HALO Infinite (Sarcasm on halo), but the fact that %90 of the games listed was going to be free on Xbox game pass to both Xbox and PC. Destiny 2 and ALL expansions, all the new titles, such as Halo, Avowed, Flight Sim 2020, game previews such as Grounded, and all many of the new Indie titles coming. PC game pass current $5 monthly, Xbox and PC with live price $15 monthly, and you only need one person in your household to purchase, for everyone to get it, if done properly.

Tom and NXGamer discussed this on Broken Silicon 59 starting at the 1:44 mark.

What are your thoughts on Ryzen APU's launching for vendors only?

Brian Steiner

Hey Tom, with the next gen consoles coming loaded with fast SSDs when do you think game devs start requiring SSDs for their games on PC and if so, do you think they would settle for any old SSD or require Nvme from the get go? I'm in the market for an M.2 drive myself and I'm wondering if getting one with 3400Mbps write speed should be enough to compete with the consoles down the generation when they start really using them to their fullest.

Any thoughts on AMD AIB partners launching new RX 5600 XT/5700 XT SKUs in the past month? Seems like odd timing with RDNA 2 getting closer & closer to launch.

Cleansweep

Could you go into further depth about the PS5 scalable GPU patent? On the surface to me it doesn't seem like that wild of an idea. How does this compare to SLI/Crossfire? It just seems odd to me that no one would not have already had a patent for this.

Jeremy Lamb

Hi Tom, is there any news on a potential X670/B650 chipset? The guys at HWUB don't think a new series is warranted but every generation of Ryzen has brought about a new series, X370 (Ryzen 1000) X470 (Ryzen 2000) and X570 for Ryzen 3000. I can see their reasoning but at the same time the motherboard vendors will want to release new products, what's your take ?

Jack Peterson

Hey Hey!! :) Just a strange thought with the Zen 3 launch incoming, to which we have been assured 3-4 times officially now, the X570 launch, B550 launch looking so stretched, not to mention backward compatability (I bet AMD will not be putting firm dates of support again... Maybe CPU gen cycles) can you imagine an New MOBO variant such as X570-XT with support for DDR5 and anything else or will they draw a line in the sand and say that is for the upcoming AM5 platform. If I were AMD, I would save DDR5 for AM5, but thought it may get thoughts a rolling...?! Appreciate the shout out from your Broken Silicon Podcast. Cheers guys :)

Do you hear about SR-IOV? There are some updates in amdgpu driver for Linux, which indicates that Navi 10 could support it in future. This is big news to folks that use Linux as a main OS, but prefer to play games on Windows. What's your thoughts about this and gaming in virtual machine in general?

Nintendo always staggers console releases with the others. Nintendo also just released the switch lite, essentially killing off the 3DS just last year.

pyroxide

How do you think ratchet and clank ;ooked so fasty with raytracing???

To what degree if at all is the Samsung's 8 nm inferiorto tsmcs 7 nm an will it show during gaming.

Which next generation console is going to win, and why is it the Atari VCS? Also, is Star Citizen going to launch in the next gen console timeframe, or the generation after that?

TSPCFS

I am pretty sure we already answered this in a podcast. Please stop asking it.

With the next gen consoles around the corner along with RTX 3000 Series and RDNA 2. Do you think Nintendo Switch has done enough to sway developers over to their platform? I am a long time PC gamer, but outside of console and PC exclusives, it feels like a missed opportunity to exclude the Nintendo Switch Successor this generation.

Hey Tom, Happy August to everyone! So with the next generation of GPUs right around the corner, what do you think the chances are for a mainstream(non-titan) card to be released with 16GB and more of VRAM? Ampere or Navi Love my Radeon VII, but I can not get another at a decent price for my new build and need that higher VRAM for work. Hoping to not have to burn money on the Titan RTX, but newer leaks are looking like conservative VRAM amounts again for the next generation. Cheers man

Was the Hellblade 2 in-engine footage actually real-time? I think it looks just as good as the UE5 demo maybe even better. Plus why the heck didn't microsoft show Project Mara during their July presentation!

Ankith

Does it really matter if the rtx 3000 series Ray Tracing is orders of magnitude better if the games that fully take advantage of it will only be able to target a small fraction of the gaming player base? It seems like features that actually need the rt performance would be things like total path tracing or rt global illumination which can't really be tunred off unless you had a whole another rendering pipeline for non rtx 3000 series cards
