Apparently a few ex-gainax animators worked on these episodes and it really shows. There are a lot of direct homages to classics like Evangelion (the design of the Mecha is literally an EVA-02, and that kick from above scene is uncannily similar to a classic scene in the series) and Gurren Lagann (the pigeon viola attack with all the colorful lasers, and all the shiny elements that you were talking about :D
