2023-06-15 17:46:35 +0000 UTCThis is just my interpretation but I think what Canute meant by "saving" the Vikings is to show them a better way than what they were. This is obviously from a belief that believes in God/paradise/heaven. So he knew the Vikings will never reach paradise for all the shit they've done. But he also realized that God has been playing with people and testing them. Basically he saying to God: who are you to test us and make us go through all this shit just to deny us to paradise. He wants to save these Vikings who no longer have a chance to reach paradise and will forever be trapped in this hell. In a way he has been doing it. Under his rule, he prohibits duels, plundering and other Viking traditions. Him "fighting" against God simply meant he is going against what God set for them. And instead of being tested to be let into paradise, he will build a paradise on Earth to save these Vikings and defy God's will. Essentially saying that humanity no longer needs God's guidance since he will take care of them. Ofc, to an atheist, this will sound like nonsense as God was never real to them. And to someone who does believe in God, this will sound like blasphemy as Canute acknowledges the existence of God and yet openly rebelling against him. Peace through force is what hes trying to go for. Imo, both Canute and Thorfinn are going for the same idealistic goal but Canute is using more realistic methods.
