My graduation that our school district does is basically only for the current graduates, and it is not an event every individual will be in. Of course, there are some people who knows some senior who is graduating, but there is no awkward moment as you are not required to show.
Surprisingly enough, in my high school life, I was familiar with many seniors. This was due to many factors: (1) I was in Orchestra, which did not care if you were a 1st year student or graduating senior; (2) Some classes favored older students, but it was possible to sign up for them as an incoming student, so it was accidental; (3) Clubs have a tendency to have students of any grade level show; (4) Sometimes, you recognize students outside of school in public places that are nearby the school. I was lucky enough to live in an area that had commercial spaces surrounding the school, so you can imagine how many students hung around during lunch or after school; (5) if you habitually go to the library during lunch or before school, then you will meet seniors there, no questions asked!
