BTS Pics: 'Death'
Added 2024-07-22 19:49:47 +0000 UTCHello lovely Patrons!
We just wrapped on our next episode, working title Death! Here's some pictures from the set!
Here's our first look - I just called it The Angel!
We'll be talking about the philosophy of death - not only how individuals confront it, but also how it factors into nations and communities, hence the book about Diana
Brian Conway returned to style the outfits these time
He did an amazing job, as always! Although not-so-fun-fact, those heels were REALLY painful! :( Not sure why but my poor feet just didn't want to do heels today

For some reason this shot is kindof giving Eddie Redmayne in The Danish Girl... that's kindof a self-own lol but hey ho

And we called this one The Croc! Philosopher Val Plumwood famously wrote some work after encountering a crocodile, so this outfit was inspired by that!

Nicki Buglewicz returned to do the makeup and she BROUGHT IT. To get the scales pattern on my head she first painted it with black bodypaint and dark eyeshadow, then held fishnet stockings over it and put shiny eyeshadow in the gaps to look like reptilian skin! Incredible!

I will say though that being in a greenhouse in a leather jacket was PUNISHING I was SO warm
This look was actually a B-option for The Croc, but it ended up being my favourite I think!
That's Judith Butler's Frames of War on the ground there: I had some leftover thoughts on Butler after the previous episode so they're included this time
Those claws are by OnyxNailsDesign, you might recognise them as the same ones I wore to the premiere of Identiteaze
The "dirt" on me is a trick of Nicky's that we last did in our AI video: she sprayed me with coconut oil and then dusted me with cocoa powder
Somebody made me laugh here while we were shooting the stills

Okay so this one requires some explanation. When I'm designing titles and thumbnails I use a special tool that tells me what the top questions people are searching for related to a given topic. Turns out the most searched questions on the topic of 'Death' are all to do with the Death Note anime. And I've also heard that if you put a recognisable brand or symbol in the thumbnail of a video it massively increases clickthrough rates, so I have a plan - YouTube enables me to A/B test thumbnails now, so I think I'll try comparing two thumbnail designs, one with the Death Note book in it and one without, and we'll see which one does better! Influencer strategy baby!
I'm really pleased with this episode. The pictures don't show it but I've taken some fairly big creative risks with this one and I hope they pay off - you'll see more when I post screenshots from my editing phase, there's actually more to this video than you can see here!

2024-08-12 07:06:44 +0000 UTCThe timing on this video showing the universe's sense of humour - I hadn't logged into Patreon for months, I just saw the post on the 'Gram saying the new video was on Nebula and the topic is 'Death' and I ran to watch it. I lost my Mum to pancreatic cancer in June, today was her '40 days' (a big marker in eastern Orthodox funerary tradition) and we marked the occasion by choosing today to inter her ashes (NOT a very Orthodox custom). As we only found out she was ill in January we all had time to consider and ponder the ways we and others around us think about death and dying - both as individuals and as a family. The process of discussing all of this with Mum this year, as well as other tidbits - planning the funeral with her, answering questions about our future plans, making assurances that we'd look after Dad - reminded me of what your Better Cities video discussed round deploying phantasms as well. If we plan out our own funeral, are we really dead? If you have a family dinner and home movie night the evening before a medical euthanasia appointment and all go off to the hospital together, then even once it's over and you all go home, it's kind of like they're still here, right? We took control of the death event by standing on both sides of the contradiction - she's still here, but she's not here. Recounting yours and others' personal experiences with losing loved ones and explaining the philosophy behind how we process these kinds of events I feel is really insightful and helpful, and those who are a bit spiritual may say this video popped up when I personally needed to see it (the universe and everyone in it continuing to revolve around me personally, of course, lol) Seeing this philosophy pulled apart to dissect the way that we treat people in war zones, climate change disaster victims, and people endangered by others due to prejudice, reminded me that there's a lot of work to be done. Thank you for another fantastic video!

2024-08-04 09:45:29 +0000 UTCMy room mate of 11 years died in may 23. I am angry about that. But listening to your video and thinking about it. I am not mad that she died. I am sad she's no longer here. I am mad that she deserved better in her final years. She deserved more happiness. She deserved brighter times with more possibilities. She deserved more laughs and joy. Getting old and dying are separate things, but they're not. Poverty is also not the same thing, but when it's there, it colors everything. getting old is much scarier bleaker than dying. I think your nxt video should be about which is your favorite flavor of ice cream and why. You mentioned Princess Di and the Iraq war. And then you summarized them "For those too young to remember" .... I wanted to make a joke about how I was dying of old age watching the news, the stories and the tragedies of my late 20s and 30s have to be explained to people who were not yet there. It is my dearest hope for you that age takes it's time to get to you. and must happen quickly because it ignored you for so long. Not just Abigail, but you reading this. too. Move. Eat well. Enjoy the good things. Maybe some day we can arrange things so getting old doesn't have to suck so badly.

2024-07-22 23:00:11 +0000 UTCThe Croc is giving post-apocalyptic antihero; like Snake Plissken, except with actual reptile cred.

2024-07-22 22:05:14 +0000 UTCOh I absolutely love the topic of death, it's a really interesting concept to dig into because it relates to everyone, and everyone has their own interpretations of it. So excited for this episode!

2024-07-22 20:16:26 +0000 UTCThe only thing I'd be careful of if you use the Death Note one for basis of a thumbnail is that you'll almost inevitably have random people coming in thinking it's a video only about Death Note.
