Blue Eye Samurai | 1x5 The Tale of the Ronin and the Bride - FULL REACTION!

Comments

I loved this episode. The use of Bunraku puppet theater as the narrative structure and the reveal of Akemi meeting her fate as the prospective bride in the Shogun's court. Teeth blackened and all. She was a brat but doesn't deserve the life her society and her father have set out for her. The last 2 episodes I came to really like her character. Mizu means water in Japanese and I love the thread they pull throughout. Her eyes are blue like water, her mother says she wanted her to be like water so that she could survive. I am not certain if Mikio or her mother was the one to betray her but regardless of who called in her bounty, they both betrayed her in the ways that really matter. Mikio's pride was definitely injured by her besting him but I also think he was legitimately scared of the euphoria she took in the fight and how she was all of sudden on top of him as the sexual aggressor was too much for his already fragile ego. It was side he hadn't seen and wasn't prepared for. He is wrong to react that way but I partly understand it. Him coming back makes me think it wasn't Mikio but it really could go either way. I find it interesting that her mission is to kill the gaijin who sired her but in an earlier episode she prays at a shrine and swears to her mother that she will avenge them but the mother she speaks of betrayed her. So she is essentially speaking of the ideal she had of her dead mother before she found her on the rainbow bridge and it all went wrong It is really well done and incredibly sad. Every episode strips Mizu down more and more. She is the villain and the hero; the bride and the vengeful samurai. Very layered writing.
