Attack on Titan | The Final Chapters: Part 2 - FULL REACTION!

Well, that's it! Attack on Titan is over... The finale left us feeling pretty damn exhausted and at a loss for words, even though we desperately tried to find them during the discussion lol. In the end it was all about the journey these characters went on, and we are so happy we got to experience it with you all!

Oh, and yeah MAPPA Studio hasn't been known for going easy on their animators or treating them fairly.

Yup, the nuking of future Paradis happened generations and generations after Mikasa died. One person's or a handful of individuals' actions is unfortunately not going to change the whole of humanity's way of always being. It's sadly realistic. The "Battle of Heaven and Earth" is in the long-forgotten past for the people who lived in that future. Eren managed to make peace for the people he loved for all their remaining years alive. I don't think he could've done so in perpetuity. Especially not when his way of going about things was by massacring most of humanity. Nevertheless, we shouldn't stop fighting to make things better, even if we can't completely change the way things are for everyone, everywhere

My comment below is not meant to attack you or anyone in particular but just to bring to the discussion on how I feel about the ending. I think AOT and Isayama fall in the same trap as so many other shows and people. This idea that things could be better if the people in power were different completely strips away what the actual root of the problem is, the systems in place. Its why I have such a hard time enjoying the direction Isayama took AOT. Systemic issues can not be fixed by just replacing those in power and I think this idea that power itself is destructive is just naive. I would have loved Isayama to maybe take AOT in the direction where Eren recognizes the revolutionary potential of using the Founding Titan and its powers to bring down those very systems. That can be done without genocide. I mean for example, the world of AOT clearly is inspired by the period after WW1, and Eren even spends time with the colonized/exploited people in the refugee camps of Marley. Could have actually included their material struggle in that as well. Now tbf to Isayama, it can be hard to not be nihilistic sometimes when you realize that the world has always been built by exploitation, violence, and genocide. That being said, it doesn't have to be that way. All my critiques of the ending aside, I still love AOT and am a little sad its over. It's certainly a wild ride that I think anyone who loves animation should experience. Apologies for the long comment XD

The ending certainly takes some time to digest. It isn't surprising to me though considering Isayama as a person. He seems to have a very pessimistic attitude on humanity on the macro level. It seems like he has more hope for people on a 1 to 1. My read on the whole thing is that we can't ever stop striving for trying to understand each other, but that it'll likely never change because as you said, people forget history and forget the sacrifices in the past. Eren likely did try to stop the outcome, but as he said, he was dissapointed by the outside world once he found out about it and wanted to level it all. It's a mix of both I feel, because he's just as human as the rest of them when it comes down to it. Ymir was seeking connection, and I feel it was seeing Mikasa do what she couldn't that allowed her to move on: Allow/kill the person they loved. All in all, do I love the ending? I don't think I'd describe it that way at least. I'm satisfied with it however, I think a happier ending would feel untrue to the rest of the material. I do think, like Armin and Hange, that it's always worth striving to understand each other even when it looks bleakest.

I also wondered a lot about whether the Rumbling was the only solution. And when Eren said he was "a garden variety idiot who got his hands on power" - it kinda clicked for me. Of course, this is to only 'solution' when/if the power was his. What if the power was in the hand of Amin or someone more pacifist? Only to remind us how power can be so destructive if used by the wrong people. And i dont think there was a point to the Rumbling (beside illustrating the point above, plot-wise) because there is no justifications for it at all. I also love the parallel between Mikasa and Ymir - especially Mikasa's ability to breakaway from her blind loyalty to Eren and do the right thing - unlike Ymir. Anyway, thanks for AOT reactions guys! Hope your little one gets better soon

About the Mikasa OVA and alternate timeline thing, the anime did confirm they have a multiverse. In the manga after almost every chapter isayama would add extra comic strips of the gang in school during a modern time like ours. It would seem like a fun "What If" version of the show but then Mappa actually added 2 scenes of them during the scene where Gabi shoots off erens head and zeke catches it. You see a "goth Mikasa next to a nerdy Armin with glasses" and also "Rainer eren levi jean armin and connie in a sauna" . For reference search "AOT School Caste"

I cant remember whether it was before the Coup d'etat in S3, or just before Erens trial in S1, but, Erwin and Pyxis had a conversation above the wall, talking about humanity - Pyxis said he had heard a story that one day humans would stop fighting and he wondered when that would be? Erwin replies, he doesn't think that'll ever happen until there is one human or fewer. It just rings true of the horrible cycle of Humanity, both with or without the Titans; I would assume the time lapse shows a Paradis many many hundreds of years later being destroyed.
