You can both watch the opening as it has no spoilers. It's 4 years from where we left from season 3, that 9 years was when Reiner, Annie & Bertholdt first went to Paradis island and spend 5 years there before coming back.

I don't agree with just plain tell this information. I saw the series without any spoilers or little details and just figured it out myself, I think it's more fun that way, no matter how little the info. Just my opinion mate

just an overview of information that is already available which is nice to have imo: this is 9 years after episode 1 of the series, 4 years after the fight in shiganshina and 3 years after the S3 finale, which means that Reiner is now 21 years old while Eren and most of the other cadets are around 19 years old. Gabi, Falco, Udo and Zofia are 12 years old.
