Shyam's Back Brace
Added 2021-10-15 05:46:22 +0000 UTCI decided that there's no way Shyam's hyperflexible noodle spine doesn't cause her issues under gravity, so I made a back brace for her to wear while she's working or doing a lot of walking. This normally goes under her clothes and it passively supports her upper body weight through compression and a vertically rigid but horizontally flexible hydraulic pocket fabric. The latter concept and sketch is courtesy of Sevoris from the ToughSF discord server.
Shyam's neck attaches further back on her skull than a typ human's, which makes the back of her head appear weirdly flat.

It was actually originally designed by an artist for a character in their sci-fi comic who has a hyper-flexible spine, but the idea really took off from there!β

2021-10-17 00:29:59 +0000 UTCthey do make back braces similar to this for regular humans! they're mostly marketed as PPE for heavy lifting or as posture correction, but the hydraulic fabric i don't think is something you'll find on the market irl. They usually just use compression and stiff inserts around the lumbar spine.
