Couple of progress shots and a layer breakdown of a recent commission!
I know with these high detail headshots I usually just go through the slow process of doing thin linework and carefully coloring in the flats, then rendering ontop - and more often than not, softening the linework, or replacing it fully with shading. But with the recent more illustrative works I've been doing, I felt it apt to just adopt the methods from there since they feel quite a bit more fluid; just focusing on color groups and shapes first and foremost, does help keep the rendering process as the primary source of detailing - You just gotta manage the layer splits to make sure you still can organize your work wisely and avoid having to clean up edges 4 separate times hAH

The split layers are in a hierarchy of what is "in front" of smth else, with one of the last layers then also including some final over-painting
