Anamorphose - Background

Finally here's the finished version! Previously I've posted the different steps I took to construct this piece in Photoshop https://www.patreon.com/posts/anamorphose-wip-30545690 And then also the Animation we added on top of the cleaned up lineart https://www.patreon.com/posts/falling-33122572 And now here's the finished shaded version with an added quick color wash (done digitally)

This is the piece I mentioned in the breakdown of https://www.patreon.com/posts/zombie-thing-33647819 as possibly being the reason why I feel now a bit more confident in my shading, having spent hours just focusing on treating the different values correctly and with the continued feedback of my teacher; who really hammered down the importance to just spend the time necessary to really polish the shading. Keeping the shapes correct, making sure what is closest has higher contrast than what is far away (which I now realize is a much better shading rule than "close things are darker than things that are far away" Because that rule is only applicable for the atmospheric perspective effect; and becomes really limiting when planning out the values for any other setting :'I

To think that I would've hidden away at the mere thought of non-organic interior scenery a year ago is really weird when seeing the result of this assignment.

The "Tonal" aka shading, was all done with pencil and graphite powder. We were shown how to sharpen our pencils with box-cutters, how and where to balance out the different shades, how to use a kneadable eraser to add sharp countours and highlights, or how to roll the eraser over a section to "lighten" the shade, and how to use a piece of cloth to rub areas to lessen the contrast (amazing how quickly that particular trick made things look better in certain areas! Will be applying that corrective trick digitally as well with large soft brushes)

I really appreciate that particular background teacher, because no matter how often you make an error, he would always come sit down and show you how to correctly do it again. Certainly learned to plan out cylinders with more attention to perspective in the future!
