I tend to avoid using pure black in my images, since I used to depend very heavily on it to make my colors look even somewhat passable - way back when I first was learning digital art. So I've been afraid of using it as a crutch. But even after I started to get more comfortable with colors, I still have been avoiding making my images too dark. There obviously have been exceptions, but it's something different to start a piece with the explicit intentions of making it dark in a literal sense, trying to ignore those thoughts of what is "good" or "bad" and just do what I like doing
