INT. ANA'S BASEMENT LAB - MORNING - THREE DAYS AFTER THE FUSION
The lab is unusually quiet. Ana sits at her workstation, but instead of dimensional calculations, she's researching sensory overload management and adaptation therapy on her laptop. The ring device sits powered down and covered.
Dimitri hasn't emerged from the small adjoining room she's claimed as her space since the transformation.
Ana approaches the door and knocks gently.
ANA
Dimitri? I made coffee.
DIMITRI (O.S.)
(muffled through the door)
Too strong. I can smell it from here.
Ana winces, realizing her mistake.
ANA
I'll make it weaker. Or tea?
DIMITRI (O.S.)
Everything smells too strong, Ana. Everything.
Ana leans against the door frame, concerned.
ANA
Can I come in?
A long pause.
DIMITRI (O.S.)
The door's not locked.
INT. DIMITRI'S MAKESHIFT ROOM - CONTINUOUS
Ana enters to find Dimitri curled up on a makeshift bed, wearing loose pajamas with the back seam split to accommodate her tail. Blackout curtains block most light, and she's wearing noise-canceling headphones around her neck.
Dimitri's ears are flattened against her head, and her tail is wrapped tightly around her body. She looks exhausted.
DIMITRI
(without looking up)
I can hear your heartbeat from here. And you're wearing that lavender lotion again.
ANA
(sitting carefully on the floor)
Is it too much?
DIMITRI
Everything's too much.
Ana notices clothes scattered around the room - shirts with holes cut for her tail, pants with awkward modifications, nothing that fits properly.
ANA
How long since you've eaten?
DIMITRI
Food tastes different now. Wrong. Like I can taste every individual ingredient.
ANA
That's not necessarily bad..
DIMITRI
(sitting up abruptly, ears flicking with agitation)
Ana, I can't leave this room. I can't go outside. I can't wear normal clothes. I accidentally bit my tongue this morning because I forgot about the fangs.
Her voice breaks slightly.
DIMITRI (CONT'D)
I adapted to being a woman. I was starting to like it, even. But this... this is different.
ANA
How is it different?
DIMITRI
(touching her ears unconsciously)
When I changed gender, I was still human. Still me. But now I'm... what am I, Ana? Am I still human?
Ana considers this carefully.
ANA
You're still you. You're still Dimitri.
DIMITRI
Am I? Or am I part Echo now?
INT. ANA'S HOUSE - KITCHEN - LATER
Ana experiments in the kitchen, trying to prepare food that won't overwhelm Dimitri's enhanced senses. She's working with very mild ingredients, minimal seasoning, trying to create something palatable.
She carries a simple bowl of plain rice and lightly steamed vegetables to the basement.
INT. DIMITRI'S MAKESHIFT ROOM - CONTINUOUS
Ana enters to find Dimitri attempting to modify a shirt, but her new claws keep catching the fabric. She's growing frustrated.
ANA
I brought food.
DIMITRI
(looking at the ruined shirt)
I can't even sew properly anymore. These claws...
She holds up her hands, showing small, retractable claws that have appeared at her fingertips.
ANA
Those are new.
DIMITRI
They appeared this morning. Along with this.
She points to a small patch of fur that's started growing along her forearms.
ANA
(setting down the food)
The transformation isn't complete.
DIMITRI
(panicked)
What do you mean, not complete?
ANA
I mean you're still changing. Echo's integration is ongoing.
Dimitri stares at her arms, then at Ana.
DIMITRI
How much more am I going to change?
ANA
I don't know. But maybe... maybe we should work with it instead of fighting it.
DIMITRI
Work with it how?
Ana sits down and pulls out a notebook.
ANA
Let's start with the basics. What exactly feels wrong about your current situation?
DIMITRI
(counting on her fingers)
The clothes don't fit. The sensory input is overwhelming. I can't control my new reflexes. I don't know what I am anymore.
ANA
Okay. Those are all solvable problems.
DIMITRI
Are they?
ANA
The clothes we can fix. The sensory issues we can manage. The reflexes you can learn to control.
DIMITRI
And the existential crisis?
ANA
That one's harder. But we'll work on it together.
INT. BASEMENT LAB - EVENING - ONE WEEK LATER
Dimitri emerges from her room wearing a beautifully designed outfit that accommodates all her new features. Her tail moves freely, her ears are perked up and alert, and she looks more comfortable in her own skin.
Ana looks up from her work, surprised and pleased.
ANA
You look...
DIMITRI
Different?
ANA
Confident.
Dimitri moves to her workstation and begins tinkering with equipment, her enhanced dexterity and senses actually making her more precise than before.
DIMITRI
I've been thinking about what you said. About working with the changes instead of fighting them.
ANA
And?
DIMITRI
Maybe being part Echo isn't the worst thing that could happen.
She pauses, testing a component with her enhanced senses.
DIMITRI (CONT'D)
I can detect dimensional energy fluctuations by smell now. I can hear electromagnetic interference. I can sense things about our equipment that I never could before.
ANA
That's incredible.
DIMITRI
I'm not saying I'm ready to go back to dimension hopping. But maybe... maybe when I am ready, I'll be better at it than I was before.
Ana smiles, relieved to see her friend adapting.
ANA
What about going outside?
Dimitri's ears flatten slightly.
DIMITRI
That's still... difficult. Too many people, too many questions.
ANA
What if we started small? Just the backyard?
DIMITRI
(considering)
At night, maybe. When it's quieter.
ANA
We can try tonight if you want.
DIMITRI
(tail swishing with nervous energy)
Okay. But if it's too much...
ANA
We come right back inside. No questions asked.
EXT. ANA'S HOUSE - BACKYARD - NIGHT
Ana and Dimitri step outside together. The backyard is small and private, surrounded by tall fences. Dimitri's ears swivel constantly, taking in new sounds, but she doesn't seem overwhelmed.
DIMITRI
(breathing deeply)
I can smell everything. The neighbor's barbecue from this afternoon, car exhaust from the street, flowers I didn't even know were planted here.
ANA
Is it too much?
DIMITRI
(closing her eyes and listening)
No. It's... complex. But not overwhelming.
She opens her eyes, which reflect the moonlight.
DIMITRI (CONT'D)
I can see perfectly. Better than perfect.
ANA
How do you feel?
Dimitri considers the question, her tail moving in slow, thoughtful patterns.
DIMITRI
Like I'm still me. But also like I'm more than I was before.
ANA
Is that good or bad?
DIMITRI
(small smile)
I think... I think it might be good.
She looks up at the stars, her enhanced vision picking out details invisible to Ana.
DIMITRI (CONT'D)
Echo chose me for a reason. I don't know what that reason is yet, but maybe I don't need to fight it.
ANA
What about dimension travel?
DIMITRI
I'm not ready yet. But maybe someday soon.
She turns to Ana, her golden eyes reflecting determination.
DIMITRI (CONT'D)
When I am ready, I want to find out what Echo really was. And why she chose to become part of me.
ANA
We'll figure it out together.
DIMITRI
Together.
They stand in comfortable silence, Dimitri gradually becoming more comfortable with her new senses, Ana supportive and patient beside her.
DIMITRI (CONT'D)
(after a moment)
Ana?
ANA
Yeah?
DIMITRI
Thank you. For not treating me like a freak. For helping me figure this out.
ANA
You're my friend, Dimitri. No matter what you look like or what abilities you have.
Dimitri's ears perk up, and her tail curls in a gesture that might be the equivalent of a smile.
DIMITRI
I'm lucky to have you.
ANA
We're lucky to have each other.
They head back inside, Dimitri walking with more confidence than she's had since the transformation.
