Episode 5: Connection
INT. DIMITRI'S APARTMENT - MORNING - FIEW DAYS AFTER EPISODE 4
Dimitri stands before her bedroom mirror, struggling with a sports bra. Her frustration is evident as she adjusts the unfamiliar garment. Her body has changed again, curves more pronounced, chest noticeably larger than before.
DIMITRI
(muttering)
This is ridiculous.
She attempts a few jumping motions, wincing at the discomfort and lack of support.
DIMITRI (CONT'D)
(to her reflection)
How do women deal with this every day?
A KNOCK at the door interrupts her self-examination.
DIMITRI (CONT'D)
(calling out)
Coming!
She throws on a loose hoodie and opens the door to find Ana holding coffee and a small shopping bag.
ANA
Morning. Brought reinforcements.
(holding up the bag)
And solutions.
DIMITRI
(suspicious)
What kind of solutions?
ANA
The kind that will make our next jump more comfortable for you.
She hands Dimitri the bag. Inside are several properly fitted sports bras and athletic wear designed for women with fuller figures.
DIMITRI
(embarrassed)
Ana, you didn't have to..
ANA
Yes, I did. You can't keep pretending your body hasn't changed last time. It's affecting your mobility, and that could be dangerous.
Dimitri examines the items, her expression conflicted.
DIMITRI
It feels like... giving up. Like accepting this.
ANA
(gently)
It's being practical. We have a job to do.
After a moment, Dimitri nods reluctantly.
DIMITRI
Thank you.
INT. ANA'S BASEMENT LAB - LATER THAT DAY
The lab is organized and ready. On the workbench sits a secured case containing the materials they retrieved from their previous universe.
Ana checks the power levels while Dimitri, now wearing properly fitted athletic gear, moves with notably improved comfort and confidence.
ANA
Power at 100%. Obviously enough for a two-hour visit to Jade and Morgan's universe.
DIMITRI
(examining the materials case)
Still can't believe we found these so quickly. We really were lucky.
ANA
Yes we were, at least me...
DIMITRI
(hesitant)
Are you sure we need to go back so soon? We could spend the time exploring new universes, finding more materials..
ANA
(firmly)
Dimitri, you need to see their progress. And they might have new information that could help us prioritize which materials to search for next.
DIMITRI
(sighing)
I know you're right. It's just... every day we spend not actively searching feels like a day wasted.
ANA
Sometimes the best progress comes from collaboration, not just action.
Dimitri considers this, then nods.
DIMITRI
Two hours. In and out.
ANA
Two hours.
They activate the machine, step into the ring, and vanish into a interdimensional void.
INT. JADE AND MORGAN'S BASEMENT LAB - CONTINUOUS
Ana and Dimitri materialize in the familiar cluttered lab. The space has been reorganized since their last visit - new equipment, more sophisticated monitoring devices, and what appears to be the beginning framework of a large temporal manipulation device.
JADE looks up from a complex equation on a whiteboard, her face lighting up with surprise.
JADE
Ana! Dimitri! You're back already?
MORGAN emerges from behind a bank of computers, equally surprised.
MORGAN
We didn't expect you for at least another week. Did something go wrong?
ANA
(holding up the materials case)
Something went right. We found the first items on your list.
Jade and Morgan exchange amazed glances.
MORGAN
Already? That's... incredible.
As they gather around Ana and the case, Morgan's eyes widen as she notices Dimitri's continued physical changes.
MORGAN (CONT'D)
(tactfully)
Dimitri, you look... different from last time.
DIMITRI
(uncomfortable)
My body keeps changing. Guess not all the universe appreciate our presence.
JADE
(concerned)
Are you ok ?
DIMITRI
Just... constant adjustment. Nothing fits right, movement feels different, balance is off.
ANA
(opening the case)
Which is why we need your temporal reversion technology to work.
The materials catch the lab's lighting, all eyes on it.
MORGAN
(awed)
These are perfect. The quantum resonance signature is exactly what we calculated.
JADE
(examining them closely)
Where did you find them?
DIMITRI
A big half abandonned hangar full of strange device. It was laying there.
MORGAN
(to Ana)
Your interdimensional travel technology is going to revolutionize everything. Not just for science, but for resource acquisition, cultural exchange..!
ANA
(interrupting)
Let's focus on the immediate problem first. How much progress have you made on the temporal device?
Jade leads them to the framework they observed earlier - a complex arrangement of rings and conduits, similar to Ana and Dimitri's travel device but with different energy patterns.
JADE
We've made significant headway. The basic temporal field generator is functional for small objects.
She demonstrates with a wilted flower, placing it in a small containment field. Energy pulses around it, and the flower slowly rejuvenates, petals unfurling, color returning.
JADE (CONT'D)
We can reverse approximately 72 hours of time for organic matter this size.
DIMITRI
(hopeful)
And for larger objects? Humans?
MORGAN
That's the challenge. The energy requirements scale exponentially. With your materials, we might be able to extend the field to cover a human body, but—
ANA
But?
MORGAN
(hesitant)
The temporal displacement for complex organic systems is unpredictable. We'd need to test extensively.
DIMITRI
(frustrated)
How extensively?
JADE
Weeks. Maybe months of calibration and testing.
Dimitri's face falls. Ana places a supportive hand on her shoulder.
ANA
We have time. And we can keep gathering materials to help accelerate your research.
MORGAN
(brightening)
Actually, that reminds me—
She retrieves a small bag from a desk drawer, identical to the gold they'd collected before.
MORGAN (CONT'D)
Payment for this one plus interest for future materials.
ANA
(accepting the bag)
This should fund our next several jumps.
JADE
(sitting down)
Can I ask you something personal, Dimitri?
Dimitri tenses slightly but nods.
JADE (CONT'D)
What's it like? Living in a completely different body?
DIMITRI
(after a pause)
Imagine waking up every day in a house that looks like yours but all the furniture has been rearranged. You know where everything should be, but you keep bumping into things, reaching for handles that aren't where you expect them.
MORGAN
(thoughtfully)
And mentally? Do you feel different?
DIMITRI
That's the strangest part. My thoughts, my memories, my personality - they're all intact. But the way I move through the world, how people react to me, the basic physical experience of existing - it's all changed.
ANA
(curious)
What's been the hardest adjustment?
DIMITRI
(with a rueful laugh)
Running. I used to run every morning. Now I need engineering equipment just to jog without discomfort.
(gesturing to her sports bra)
Ana had to teach me about... structural support.
JADE
(sympathetically)
I can imagine. The learning curve must be steep.
MORGAN
Do you ever think about... what if this is permanent? What would you do?
ANA
(quickly)
Morgan ?!
DIMITRI
(interrupting)
It's okay, Ana.
(to Morgan)
I can't think about that. If I accept this might be permanent, I'll stop fighting to change it back.
JADE
But what if fighting to change something unchangeable prevents you from living?
A heavy silence falls over the group.
DIMITRI
(quietly)
That's a luxury I can't afford right now.
Ana checks her watch.
ANA
We have about an hour left. What else can you tell us about the remaining materials?
Morgan pulls out their research notes, and the conversation shifts back to technical details. Over the next hour, they share information about their respective universes, scientific discoveries, and the challenges of their work.
JADE
In our world, time manipulation research is considered theoretical at best, dangerous at worst. We've had to be extremely secretive.
ANA
In our, it's not even a thing. If the military or government found out...
MORGAN
It's nice to have colleagues who understand the work without needing explanations.
DIMITRI
(smiling for the first time)
Or judgment about the risks.
As their time winds down, the four scientists have developed a comfortable rapport, sharing stories about their respective universes and the differences they've observed.
JADE
In our world, there is wars everytime, I don't think it is common...?
ANA
(laughing)
Yeah, but no, war is also too present in our world.
MORGAN
What about music? Do you have the same artists?
DIMITRI
( approaching Morgan )
I knew you would be curious, here is the top 10 artists of all time, at least for me.
( Whispering ) Don't ask for Ana's opinion, she have terrible tastes.
JADE
(fascinated)
This look similar, will need to hear it one day.
Ana's watch begins to beep - fifteen minutes remaining.
ANA
We should start wrapping up.
MORGAN
(to Dimitri)
Will you be okay waiting for our research to progress?
DIMITRI
(with new resolve)
I have to be. And knowing I'm not alone in this... it helps.
JADE
You're not alone. We're all working toward the same goal now.
Ana and Dimitri gather their equipment and payment. The mood is warmer than when they arrived.
ANA
(to Jade and Morgan)
Thank you. For everything. Not just the technical collaboration, but...
(glancing at Dimitri)
For being understanding.
MORGAN
Thank you for trusting us with your story.
The watch beeps again - five minutes.
DIMITRI
(to Jade and Morgan)
We'll be back in a few days with more materials. Try not to blow up the lab while we're gone.
JADE
(grinning)
No promises.
Ana and Dimitri position themselves for return transport. The familiar energy builds around them.
ANA
(to their new friends)
See you soon.
The interdimensional void opens, aspirating them.
INT. ANA'S BASEMENT LAB - CONTINUOUS
Ana and Dimitri rematerialize in their home lab. The familiar surroundings feel both comforting and confining after their visit.
DIMITRI
(sitting down heavily)
I didn't expect to feel... connected to them.
ANA
They're good people. And brilliant scientists.
DIMITRI
It's been so long since I've had a normal conversation with anyone besides you.
ANA
(sitting beside her)
How do you feel about waiting for their research to progress?
DIMITRI
(considering)
Frustrated, but... hopeful. For the first time, this feels like a real plan instead of just desperate searching.
ANA
And having other people who understand what we're doing?
DIMITRI
(smiling slightly)
That part feels good. Really good.
Ana checks the materials case and their equipment.
ANA
Next jump in three days?
DIMITRI
(nodding with renewed determination)
Next jump in three days. We have more materials to find.
She stands and moves to the workbench, but her movement is more fluid now, more natural. The physical adjustments, combined with the emotional support from their new friends, have given her a subtle boost in confidence.
DIMITRI (CONT'D)
Ana?
ANA
Yeah?
DIMITRI
Thank you. For the clothes, for pushing me to visit Jade and Morgan, for... everything.
ANA
(smiling)
That's what partners do.
DIMITRI
(with determination)
Then let's get back to work. We have a timeline to fix.
