Taking the risk - ep2

Episode 2: The constent

INT. DIMITRI'S APARTMENT - MORNING - ONE WEEK LATER

Sunlight filters through half-drawn blinds. The apartment is cluttered with clothing scattered across furniture—men's jeans and t-shirts alongside new, hastily purchased women's basics.

DIMITRI, now fully female in appearance, stands before a bathroom mirror. The transformation is complete—shoulder-length brown hair, softer features, a feminine figure. She stares at her reflection, eyes hollow from lack of sleep. Her movements are awkward, uncertain, as if her limbs don't quite belong to her.

She brushes her teeth mechanically, fumbling with the toothbrush, still adjusting to the subtle differences in her grip, her coordination.

A KNOCK at the door.

DIMITRI

(calling out, wincing at the sound of her own voice)

It's open.

ANA enters, carrying a tablet and a paper bag. She hesitates briefly at the doorway, still not fully accustomed to Dimitri's transformation.

ANA

Brought breakfast. And results.

DIMITRI

(drying her face)

Which one should I dread more?

ANA

(pulling out bagels)

Eat first. Talk second.

INT. DIMITRI'S KITCHEN - MOMENTS LATER

They sit at a small table covered with scientific equipment, notebooks, and empty coffee cups. Dimitri picks at her food while Ana opens her tablet.

ANA

The blood work confirms it. XX chromosomes, fully female endocrine system. The transformation was... comprehensive.

DIMITRI

(sarcastically)

No kidding. I've been living in this body for a week. I've discovered all sorts of "comprehensive" changes.

ANA

(ignoring the comment)

But your brain activity patterns are virtually identical to your baseline readings from before. Whatever they did, it didn't alter your cognitive functions or memories.

DIMITRI

Great. So I'm still me, just... not me.

(gesturing to her body)

I can't live like this, Ana. I keep bumping into things, dropping stuff. I feel like I'm wearing someone else's skin.

ANA

It takes time to—

DIMITRI

(cutting her off)

Time isn't going to fix this. I need to fix this.

Ana sets down her tablet, her expression serious.

ANA

The machine's energy reserves are finally recharged. We can jump again.

DIMITRI

(perking up)

Today?

ANA

If you're sure that's what you want.

DIMITRI

What I want is to be me again.

ANA

(cautiously)

You know we can't go back to that same universe. It's too dangerous. They were prepared for you last time.

DIMITRI

I know. But there have to be other places, other possibilities.

(leaning forward)

You said you've been working on something new?

Ana nods and pulls out her notebook.

INT. ANA'S BASEMENT LAB - LATER THAT DAY

The lab has changed. More equipment, better organization. The ring device sits in the center, modified with additional components, looking more refined.

Ana stands at a new control panel, displaying complex equations and dimensional coordinates.

ANA

After analyzing the data from your jump, I discovered something incredible.

(pointing to a specific readout)

Every universe has a unique quantum signature—I'm calling it the Universal Constant. It's like a dimensional fingerprint.

She brings up a holographic display showing multiple waveforms.

ANA (CONT'D)

With this, we can potentially target specific universes instead of jumping blindly.

DIMITRI

(examining the display)

So we can visit multiple universes, catalog them—

ANA

(finishing the thought)

—and find one that might have a way to reverse what happened to you.

DIMITRI

(nodding)

But not that first one. Not yet.

ANA

Not yet. We need more information, more resources.

DIMITRI

(with determination)

Let's do this. But this time, I'm not going alone.

ANA

(nervously)

I was hoping you'd say that.

They exchange a look—fear mixed with resolve.

INT. ANA'S BASEMENT LAB - HOURS LATER

The lab is dimly lit, the ring machine glowing with pulsing energy. Ana and Dimitri stand before it, dressed in matching utility jumpsuits. They've packed small bags with supplies. Both wear the specialized watches.

Dimitri adjusts her watch, setting the timer.

DIMITRI

Forty-five minutes. No more.

ANA

(double-checking her own watch)

Agreed. We get in, we explore, we get out. No heroics.

DIMITRI

(with a half-smile)

Says the person who refused to jump last time.

ANA

Yeah, well, look how that turned out for you.

DIMITRI

(sobering)

Fair point.

Ana moves to the control panel, activating a sequence.

ANA

I've set the coordinates for a universe with minimal deviation from our own baseline. Should be relatively safe.

The machine hums to life, energy crackling around the ring.

ANA (CONT'D)

Ready?

DIMITRI

(taking a deep breath)

Ready.

They step into the ring together. The air around them distorts, the familiar black void opening.

ANA

(gripping Dimitri's hand)

Here we go...

The void engulfs them—a rush of darkness, pressure, the sensation of falling through endless space.

INT. UNKNOWN BASEMENT - CONTINUOUS

A FLASH of light and Ana and Dimitri CRASH onto a hard floor. They land in tangled heaps, groaning.

The room is dimly lit, cluttered with equipment not unlike their own lab, but with different technology. The air smells of ozone and something sweet.

DIMITRI

(whispering)

Where are we?

Before Ana can answer, a SOUND comes from nearby—footsteps approaching rapidly.

DIMITRI (CONT'D)

Hide!

They scramble to find cover, but it's too late. A door swings open and TWO YOUNG WOMEN rush in, holding makeshift weapons—a wrench and what looks like a modified taser.

WOMAN #1 (JADE)

(nervous but determined)

Don't move! Who are you? How did you get in here?

Ana and Dimitri freeze, hands raised.

ANA

We're not here to hurt anyone. We're... visitors.

WOMAN #2 (MORGAN)

(pointing to the spot where they appeared)

You just appeared out of nowhere! That's impossible!

DIMITRI

(stepping forward slightly)

Actually, it's not. We're from another universe.

The women exchange shocked glances.

JADE

(lowering her wrench slightly)

You're what?

DIMITRI

(taking a calculated risk)

My name is Dimitri Kalenkov. This is Ana. We built a machine that allows us to travel between dimensions.

MORGAN

(skeptical but intrigued)

Prove it.

Ana slowly reaches into her pocket and pulls out her tablet, displaying the quantum signature readings.

ANA

These are the dimensional coordinates of our home universe... and this

(swiping to another screen)

is yours.

The women stare at the display, then at each other. Their expressions transform from suspicion to excitement.

JADE

(dropping her wrench)

Oh my god. Morgan, they did it! They actually did it!

MORGAN

(still cautious)

If you're interdimensional travelers, why come here? Why our lab?

DIMITRI

It wasn't exactly targeted. We're exploring, looking for... solutions.

JADE

Solutions to what?

Dimitri hesitates, then gestures to her own body.

DIMITRI

I wasn't always like this. In my original form, I was male. Scientists in another universe did this to me.

The women's eyes widen.

JADE

That's... wait, you're saying you used to be a man? And someone transformed you?

DIMITRI

(nodding)

Completely. Down to the chromosomes. I'm looking for a way to reverse it.

MORGAN

(thoughtfully)

We might be able to help each other.

She sets down her weapon and walks to a large whiteboard covered in complex equations.

MORGAN (CONT'D)

We're working on something too. Not space travel, but time manipulation.

DIMITRI

(shocked)

Time travel?

JADE

Not exactly. More like... temporal reversion of matter.

ANA

(stepping closer to examine the equations)

You're trying to restore objects to previous states in their timeline.

MORGAN

(impressed)

Exactly.

DIMITRI

(understanding immediately)

If you could perfect that technology...

JADE

(nodding)

We could potentially revert your body to its original state.

A moment of stunned silence as the implications sink in.

JADE (CONT'D)

I'm Jade, by the way. This is Morgan.

MORGAN

The problem is, we're missing crucial components. Materials with properties that simply don't exist in our universe.

DIMITRI

(exchanging a look with Ana)

But they might exist in others.

ANA

(checking her watch)

We have about thirty minutes left. We need to be quick.

DIMITRI

What do you need? Specifically?

Morgan hurries to a desk and pulls out a notebook. She tears out a page and begins writing rapidly.

MORGAN

This is our current list. Elements with these specific properties.

She hands the list to Dimitri, who scans it with growing excitement.

DIMITRI

Ana, this could work. We find these materials, bring them back...

ANA

And they help restore you.

JADE

It's a fair trade. You bring us what we need, we'll help you become yourself again.

DIMITRI

(nodding firmly)

Deal.

Ana checks her watch again.

ANA

Ten minutes before we have to return. We need to prepare.

DIMITRI

(suddenly remembering something)

Wait—is gold valuable in this universe?

JADE

(surprised by the question)

Gold? Not particularly. It's common in computing components.

MORGAN

(pointing to a cabinet)

We have a storage box full of gold wiring and connectors we don't use.

DIMITRI

(to Ana)

Think about it—if gold is common here but valuable in our world—

ANA

(catching on)

We could fund further research without draining our university accounts.

With only minutes remaining, they quickly stuff their pockets with gold components from Morgan and Jade's supplies.

ANA (CONT'D)

We'll be back in about ten days. Our machine needs time to recharge between jumps.

JADE

We'll keep working on the temporal reversion equations.

The watches begin to BEEP in unison—one minute warning.

DIMITRI

(to Jade and Morgan)

Thank you. You don't know what this means to me.

MORGAN

Just bring back what's on that list.

Ana and Dimitri move to the center of the room, standing close together as the watches continue to beep.

DIMITRI

(whispering to Ana)

For the first time in a week, I actually feel hopeful.

ANA

(smiling)

One universe down, infinite more to explore.

The air around them begins to distort, darkness gathering.

JADE

(calling out)

Good luck!

The darkness envelops them completely—and they vanish.

INT. ANA'S BASEMENT LAB - MOMENTS LATER

Ana and Dimitri crash back onto the concrete floor of their own lab. They lie there for a moment, catching their breath.

Then Dimitri sits up, pulling the crumpled list from her pocket, eyes bright with determination.

DIMITRI

We need to start planning our next jump immediately.

ANA

(concerned)

We should rest first, analyze what happened—

DIMITRI

(interrupting, voice intense)

Ana, for the first time since this happened to me, I have a real chance.

(holding up the list)

These materials, their machine—this could be my way back.

Ana looks at her friend—at the fierce determination in those eyes—and nods slowly.

ANA

Alright. Let's get to work.

Dimitri unfolds the list, smoothing it carefully on the table, as Ana pulls out the gold they brought back. The basement is quiet except for the soft hum of the machine powering down.

DIMITRI

(thoughtfully)

You know what's strange? A week ago, I was terrified of what happened to me.

(looking at her hands)

Now I'm just... determined. It's like this body doesn't matter as much as what we're about to discover.

ANA

(smiling slightly)

That sounds like the old Dimitri talking.

DIMITRI

(smiling back)

Maybe I haven't changed as much as I thought.

They bend over the list together, the machine's lights casting long shadows across the basement floor.
