PROCESS: Portrait from sketch to finish

Here’s my process for my semi-realistic portrait of Tanya. The video’s a bit long–the interesting bits are probably in the first 5 minutes, and the rest is me going back and editing/checking for errors. Because I’m going for a more realistic rendition, I think there’s less room for artistic anatomical liberties (although I definitely still took some), so I needed to be a bit more careful!

Additionally, since I’m inventing, I only have a rough idea of what the image should “feel like” to go by, which results in a lot of trial and error. A lot of it is me trying to figure out what are the quintessential features of a character.. And this being my favorite character, I’m rather picky! Do you guys remember the “visualize the apple test” that went around Twitter? Well, I don’t think I’m one of those people who can hold a really clear image of what they want to create in their heads!! So I have to draw or paint it out (usually on a new layer in Proceate), of course using a lot of references. Often times I’ll end up with many layers (60+). And now with the new Procreate, I seem to have unlimited layers… oh boy.

In a nutshell, my process is a bit messier than I would like. Hopefully with more practice I'll be able to clean up my act XD
