Virtual Shooting Update

In my last discussion on virtual shooting I talked about models using a digital camera tethered to software where the photographer has control of the camera from his or her computer in a location remote from the model’s camera/computer setup.

Whereas this method produces the same image files as if the shoot were done in person, there are physical constraints on locations due to the model  having to be in proximity to internet and power source.

In  planning a recent shoot with Alexandra, I suggested she break from her usual tethered approach and try using her phone with FaceTime. Results from that session are in the previous post on remote shooting. This allowed her to move more freely about the house and was a welcome break from her studio.

I imagined that virtual shooting was relatively new and came about due to the COVID situation stopping people traveling.

As it happens remote shooting isn’t new, it has been around for a bit and fashion magazines have been using it where photographers couldn’t be on location.

In recent weeks I happened on the app that allows remote shooting with a phone, but does not rely on the quality of the internet connection. It allows the model the freedom to work outdoors, unhindered by the need to be close to WiFi.

So, in my latest shoot with Alexandra, California to Texas, we ventured outdoors, this time with her husband’s iPhone X, and the results are incredible. Stay tuned for an upload of this gallery soon.
