Sharpe's resolve is severely tested with the return of an evil villain from his past. In addition, he loses his hard-earned captaincy, his company lose their Green Jackets, and they are brutalised under the command of Sergeant Hakeswill. The soldiers are then ordered to attack Badajos, where Sharpe's child has taken refuge.
