High Tide, Chapter 71: High Tide

First Moon, 132 AC

Comments

Yes it was a very fitting death for Corlys and Viserra and oh did they go out with a bang. Stay tuned for the next chapter to see what the death toll is! And yeah the Dance of the Dragons absolutely is a tragedy.

Tertius711

I had feeling that if some people had to die it would be Corlys and Viserra it just seemed like the time of story where the protagonist wouldn’t live to see the end and it was the case. At the very least they took out a two dragons off the board a child and dealt a blow to both Rhaenys body and morale wonder who died the family took out in Storms End. Final note this chapter left me feeling like Rhaenys on the inside just from how bad of an idea it is for dragon lords to go to war with other dragon lords and I appreciate how you made me feel that as this dance of dragons still feels like a tragedy.

Ryder

Wow. Glad you followed me for so long! And yeah Corlys and Viserra were the protagonists from the beginning and they went out epically. Let's see if they get that happy ending in another life. Stay tuned for the next chapter and story!

Tertius711

Just today I just decided to come here and support you, but I read you from the first 10 chapters in spacebattle.. What can I say? Corlys and Viserra are definitely the protagonists of this story! From the first moment until now they always shined brightly. Their last moments were too strong, although they had a full life I can't help but want to see them again in another life. There's a reason Hollywood always has those cheesy endings I guess. I can't wait for the next chapter, and your next story! Great job! You're the best!

Rdgc

Tbf there is an aspect of legend to Corlys and Viserra as well. And Aemond, Helaena, and Gael are only minorly injured unlike Rhaenys. How the rest of the war proceeds and how the Velaryons deal with their victory will be an interesting question.

Tertius711

That fire bending is no joke I would not be feeling good at all about my prospects if I am the Targaryens. If even with a 5 to 1 dragon edge (with the largest dragon in the world in Vhagar being one of the 5) none of their riders can escape unscathed and 2 of their dragons die and 1 is maimed then they are in serious trouble in the coming dragon duels with Velaryons who will be in far greater numbers and have combined fire magic attacks in addition to their dragons, are far better trained (I hope you make it evident how much of an advantage that is) and have their Valaryian steel armor suits as well. The question I am curious to see is how you write the Velaryon aftermath in how they deal with their victory in defeating the Targaryens(I think I can confidently say you are not going to have your protagonists family lose after spending 70 + chapters writing on him/them lol) because whilst I think they will and should kill most if not all of the adult riding Targaryens and Aemond by wars end, after that is where gets kind of tricky in their calculations.

NJ

They are injured as well yes though nowhere to the same degree as Rhaenys is given how all three of them ganged up on Dreamfyre at the same time. The details will be revealed in Ch73.

Tertius711

How injured are Aemond, Gael, and Helaena? Sure they managed to beat Dremfyre and Corlys and Viserra with their dragons, but they presumably had to get close enough for their dragons to do so, which means they had to also take some of the firebending attacks/injuries too as well right?

NJ

Now will long-term demands win over short-term considerations given the price they'd have to pay in order to wipe out the Targaryens, both in the cost their consciences and the cost in the lives of their family members. Especially since time will increasingly favor the Velaryons not the Targaryens with their number advantage.

Tertius711

The Velryons can't let the Targs keep any dragons unless they want dance of the dragons 2.0 in 100 years. I dont see them murdering children like Elaena so I'm wondering how it will all go down. Can't wait for the next one! Great job as always!!

Dragon Queen

What Targaryen branch in Storm's End do you speak of? There isn't one. SE is now held directly by the Iron Throne. Legitimizing bastards doesn't guarantee they'd rise up. Daemon Blackfyre getting the support he did is an exception, not the norm.

Tertius711

In order for the situation with the Blackfires to happen, all that is needed is a king like Aegon the Unworthy, who will legitimize all his bastards. As for the Baratheons, the Targaryen branch in Storm's End must rise up against the iron throne. Yes, they will not have the surname Baratheon, but the essence does not change. So I asked if the Targaryens would still have dragons. Without dragons, such a situation may well arise, but with different characters and names.

Tariel Khalvashi

How could there be? Baratheon is extinct. How would a Blackfyre situation even arise when all the circumstances that created it cannot possibly be replicated?

Tertius711

I wonder how far you will deviate from the canonical fate of the Targaryens. Will there be a war with the Blackfires and then with Baratheon?

Tariel Khalvashi

An interesting question. What made you ask that?

Tertius711

So the Targaryens will have dragons?

Tariel Khalvashi

No the epilogue will mostly be focused on the Velaryons not Westeros. The Others may not ever wake up with dozens of dragons in the world.

Tertius711

Will the epilogue contain information about the Night King and how Westeros can deal with this threat?

Tariel Khalvashi

Tbf we dk how strong the Others are but if they do actually end up defeated by just three young dragons in the books then yeah, not that big of a deal. Others might realize this too so they don't even wake up and become active in the third century like they did in canon.

Tertius711

I do not see Others as a problem, because if Velayrion wins the war and for my sanity let's assume so. They would have at least all the Dragons Rhaelle took with her even if by some miracle all the the other dragons died. By the time GOT start, they could have 20 to 30 fully-grown dragons. Which is enough to take care of this problem I do not even consider their fire magic

Tushar Srivastav

I mean Vhagar and Silverwing have no confirmed offspring cause Martin is lazy not because they don't. It's very strongly implied that several of the dragons we know in the first 130 years of Targaryen rule were laid by them. They never gave Aenys an egg, they gave him a hatchling and he was like what a toddler? Laying eggs in the cradle wasn't a fixed tradition at that point. Also Aegon the Uncrowned AND Viserys both didn't have dragons while Rhaena claimed a hatchling and their youngest two siblings had cradle eggs. I guess that as the elder two sons it was intended for them to claim Balerion and Vhagar before the whole plan got screwed up to all hell and back. It's not a big deal. Dreamfyre is a fertile dragon yes but we say that only because we are explicitly told about her laying eggs a few times while that is only implied for the other female dragons. Excluding Dreamfyre, the Velaryons still have no less than eleven female dragons, even if none of them are as fertile as Dreamfyre, collectively they will outproduce her. Eggs are not an issue. There's also no point having eggs and no one to ride them and the Velaryons already outnumber the Targaryens and that gulf is likely to only grow over the next few chapters.

Tertius711

I'm aware that female means "has laid an egg." But there's a difference between Dreamfyre and Syrax who keep laying eggs, and Vhagar and Silverwing with no confirmed offspring. If all female dragons were as productive as Dreamfyre then why did Aegon and Visenya wait so long to give Aerys an egg? Why did Aegon the Uncrowned need to claim his father's dragon? Loosing the easing access to future eggs, while House Targaryen still has Syrax, is a big issue.

Robin

Thank you so much for the praise on Jaremy! Though I'm afraid I can't accept most of the credit. Jaremy is an expy of Jeremiah Gottwald from Code Geass so if you loved Jaremy I 100% suggest you watch Code Geass for Jeremiah Gottwald! Here's a video of his best moments! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQvKYqxA3G4&t=5s FIREBENDING DRAGONLORDS! HURRR Let's see how it goes with the battles ahead for the war and your predictions!

Tertius711

Let me leave my own review One, shoutout to my favourite character ever created in any fanfic I have ever read (trust me, I've read quite a bit) Ser Jaremy Gotwell. This dude's soul is beautiful. I love the relationship he had with Corlys and Viserra as their lieges. Like Corlys is the type of lord who would never confuse Arryk and Erryk Cargyll (in canon). He cares and pays attention to these people/subordinates and in turn, said subordinates give their souls and lives for them. Ser Orange is the greatest example of this. Fun fact, the only chapter of this fic that has ever gotten me to tears was Chapter 29: Loyalties, when I was reading Jaremy's POV. From being a street urchin to becoming Lord Commander to marrying the right hand of a Princess, dude has made his life really really good. It's like the head of The Secret Service with humble beginnings marrying the Chief of Staff of The First Lady Also a testament to Corlys, he's very much an improvement on the his dick of a grandfather. Does right for his people, and his family and Lord Jaremy and Pina is very much part of it. An omake on the Adventures of the Orange Knight would be beautiful. From him being an orphan and a street kid, to his days Breezehome, to him earning his knighthood and then being recruited as a Tide Guard, to him meeting Pina and the love story there, to the children and grandchildren they have, to the heartbreak he must have felt when Rhaekar died, to him taking Luke as a squire, then meeting Sandoq The Shadow and the friendship/wholesome rivalry he would have had with him. (It'd be the whole young blood vs experience type thing. And they'd bond on the suffering they had as children). Then him training little Corlys and Baelor and the rest of the newest generation. Ah, it would be a beautiful story. Maybe I'll write such an omake, even just for my own consumption as I practise my writing skills, but even envisioning it makes my heart happy. Let the dragons and the dragonlords who think themselves gods dance their meaningless dances, The Orange Knight is the true hero of this story, the secret background character who's journey stands head and shoulders above even most of the main ones. Now turning to said dragonlords. 😂😂 I'm glad that the Targaryens have learnt that they are not only fighting dragonlords, but Firebender Dragonlords, and that, that is a fearsome combination to go up against. Me to Rhaenys: "That's rough buddy." This is my prediction for the off-screen Dances in Storm's End and Summerhall. In Storm's End, the eleven dragons have already made the dick-looking tower into another Harrenhal and the two Viserys' + Rhaenyra are probably all dead, along with their dragons. I don't see any of them doing any harm to our Firebenders, especially Jacaerys. Those ones should be the easiest kills, as they had no particular relationships with them. At most maybe one dragon is injured a bit. Prolly Daemon Velaryon's Saffyre. In Dorne is where things are dicy. IDK why, but I'm seeing Luke dying by the hand of Daemon. Because of that, the dragon twins turn on him. Baela and Rhaena with the help of Jacaerys killing their own father would be the type of heartbreak I'm looking for in such a story. Daeron and Laena vs Aegon will also be a good duel. I want Aegon to survive this war though, to see what his nonsensical hate wrought. So, Lucerys dies, Daemon and little Jaehaerys die as well. Aegon left alive, alone, burnt, battered and sunfyreless. Rhaena going into a deep deep depression; regretting not reconciling with Luke + killing their own father. Or maybe Daemon tries the whole "jumping off a dragon move" with Jacaerys and Jace is like, "what are you doing dude?" before immediately incinerating him. I hope during the Conches purge, they take as many Targaryens as they can. Maybe some of the children, especially Aelyx; his Cannibal will remain a challenge to the Velaryons. Another thing, Aemond vs Corlys II shall be a good duel as well. Maybe a mutual kill, or by luck, Vhagar is the only survivor and Aemond dies by Firebending. Eagerly waiting on the next chapter. PS: Please know that calling the pyromancy fire magic, firebending is not in anyway an insult to you or your story, it's the image I immediately got in my head when Viserra was walking around in High Tide in the darkness with a fireball as her only source of light, and the moves fit.

Neyra

I wonder how they mate lel.

Tertius711

Dragons have no visible genitalia. So a dragon's gender is judged by whether the dragon has laid eggs or not; both in canon and ITTL. Vhagar, Dreamfyre, Meleys, Silverwing, Syrax and Tessarion are classified as female because they have laid eggs. The entire dragon dynasty of House Targaryen originates from Vhagar. Vermithor, Dreamfyre, Silverwing, Cannibal, Sheepstealer and Caraxes were sired by her, proving her a female. Silverwing probably sired Meleys, Grey Ghost and Syrax, proving her a female. Meleys sired Seasmoke, proving her a female. Syrax sired Vermax, Arrax, Tyraxes, proving her a female. Dreamfyre sired the rest lol😂. And so on and so on. Dragon lays egg(s) = Female Dragon never lays eggs = Male

Neyra

Just because a dragon isn't mentioned to be laying eggs doesn't mean they don't. For reasons only Martin knows, the locals have a hard time figuring out the difference between male and female dragons so they use egg laying to determine the sex of the dragon most of the time.

Tertius711

So my impression is there is a difference between a female dragon and an egg laying female dragon. Vhagar and Silverwing are both female but we have no confirmed eggs though most people guess Vermithor is Vhagar's and Grey Ghost is Silverwing's. So when the story started each side had an egg laying female: Dreamfyre and Syrax. But now Dreamfyre is gone. I suppose her offspring could have inherited the fertility. But it would feel a little contrived to me since how rare the fertility seems to be.

Robin

2) Tbf they are younger than Aemon but yeah. They're likely dead. Nice. Let's see how those blitz attacks went. Don't forget her son is in Dorne too :) Prisoners aren't really possible to take when you fight a thousand feet in the sky lol.

Tertius711

Oh for sure. Though it may not even be a problem.

Tertius711

Did Corlys mention the Others in his last memoir?

Omar

2) Well, those two were last seen in 109AC, so you're right, they should be dead. About what I think? I think it started with a BANG, and regardless of length, it will be one hell of ride for all participants ;) I'd say that Targaryen's reckoning started succesfully, though it's too early to say without results of Storm's End and Summerhall blitz attacks.......though especially if 1st attack fully succeed , Rhaenys will be futher incapacipated with grief (given it's her husband, daughter and another grandson we're talking about). Futher speaking about attacks, am I right thinking that neither side is interested in taking prisoners, even if possible?

Maciek

1) Mostly only the result of their extraction attempt for their fallen Conch. That's the main priority now. All other operations are bust for the immediate future. 2) I never decided if Vaegon and Maegelle are still alive. Honestly they are probably dead by this point given how everyone doesn't even think of them when they are supposedly in King's Landing. 3) It's only been two years but yes they have started preparing some infrastructure and laying the groundwork on those islands for their voyages. Btw, I remember you raising concerns for the Dance and all that way back. Now that we are two chapters in, wdyt?

Tertius711

OK, if you want Dance or War against Tyranne, let it be so :) By the way, few more questions for author about wider world than only dragon duels: 1. Will we see or hear about planned intelligence operation in KL in some future chapters? 2. Are Daella and Saera only remaining Jaehaery's children still alive, or Vaegon and/or Maegelle are still somewhere too? 3. Had Western Alliance started preparations for planned exploration of Western Seas? By this time they shoild at least prepare some infrastructure on Lonely Light and/or Conqueror Islands.

Maciek

An interesting idea but I think I have one that would be even cuter. Stay tuned for it!

Tertius711

I have an idea. It's super cheesy but really cute. After Viserra dies, you can have her reincarnated into the body of the woman who ends up being Corlys' wife in his first life on our earth.

Neyra

Rhaenys has already gotten the news from Storm's End and Dorne. I just didn't want to give away the next chapter too much. And nah they probably won't. The Velaryons know all too well that their parents wanted to die and rest in the waters of Driftmark.

Tertius711

You did it and more. Wonder Rhaenys received news from Storm end and Drone the velayrion should demand the bodies back to give a proper burial

Tushar Srivastav

I'm glad I was able to surpass expectations!

Tertius711

Oh, this is much better than what I had in my head. The emotion in this was......

Tushar Srivastav

It's implied that she already has.

Tertius711

I wonder when Rhaeny will here what happened in drone and storm end

Tushar Srivastav

Indeed Neyra, great points. Dreamfyre the gigachad fr. And yeah they have loads of eggs in storage and several other egg laying females and there is indeed a high possibility those females will have fast-growing offspring like their mother Dreamfyre. Stay tuned for the next chapter!

Tertius711

I'm glad I was able to make you feel!!! We salute indeed. Yes, Rhaenys got what she deserved. Let's see how it goes in the south next chapter!

Tertius711

We salute indeed! Stay tuned for Ch72, 73, and 74 for the rest of the war and the battles!

Tertius711

Thanks! I'm glad you liked it! Our beloved first protagonists have died, but there's still a few more chapters left before this tale ends. Let's see how it goes.

Tertius711

Don't forget the three dragons and riders in Dorne too. Let's see what the butcher's bill will be next chapter and how things proceed from there. Great points!

Tertius711

Well let's see about that epilogue ehh? Stay tuned Jack!

Tertius711

Yeah Jordan, great point there. I for one much prefer 'The Dance of the Dragons' though 'War Against Targaryen Tyranny' is a suggestion from the server I quite like too.

Tertius711

We had to have the musings and reminiscing to make it really hit hard. This is Corlys and Viserra's end after all. Let's see how it goes for the epilogue! Dragon duels tend to be awfully quick tbch and per my choreographing for this one I couldn't quite figure out how to prolong it while getting the desired result. That being said for next week's chapter I will try and make it grander and more prolonged if I can! Stay tuned to see how the operation in the south went! Visenya, Vermax, Meleys, Corlys, Viserra, and Dreamfyre are all dead as a result of the Battle of Driftmark. Syrax has been half-blinded.

Tertius711

Sorta. Driftmark was reduced from its height when they returned from Tyrosh but it was still in a salvageable state and they did much to restore its former glory for 15 years until 115. That's a lot of time and investment sunk into it. A lot of sunk cost fallacy. Ultimately Viserra and Corlys' fatal flaw has always been pride, one they did best to suppress for many years but not one they could ever fully purge because it was part of who they were, the reason why they had accomplished so much. They could never have accepted abandoning Driftmark and letting the Targaryens have it without a fight. I mean the Velaryons still have Tessarion, Moondancer, Morning, Shrykos, and Terrax for prime and adult female dragons as well as quite a few females from their children's dragons as well. They're not lacking in egg layers OR eggs.

Tertius711

It was worth it. Dreamfyre took two dragons and a potential third dragon with her: Vermax, Meleys are for sure dead. Syrax is wounded and will be out of the war for some time. That's 3 dragons for the cost of 1. They have dozens more eggs from Dreamfyre in storage in Tyrosh and/or Myr and the Eastern Territories. Plus, Tessarion, Terrax and Shrykos lay eggs. After the dance, if the Velaryons win and obliterate the Targaryens, they won't need such fast growing dragons anyway. Rhaelle is probably in Velos right now absolutely drilling her younger siblings/cousins in blood magic and dragon riding and shall be doing so for the next few years. Those siblings have Dreamfyre's children for dragons, so the steroid growth applies to them as well. And of those dragons, one of them might have Dreamfyre's genes that produce eggs of fast growing dragons like Dreamfyre. Velaryons are pretty alright all things considered, even if all the 11 remaining of their adult/semi-adult dragonriders are killed, for those 11 will for sure take at least 1 or more Targaryens with them to their deaths.

Neyra

And I still don’t know if it was worth it to loose Dreamfyre. Isn’t she their main egg layer? And since the Targaryens still have Syrax. She might not have the fast growing eggs but she still lays a good number of eggs.

Robin

Thank you so much!

Tertius711

But wasn’t there a whole thing how Driftmark was a ghost of what is was after they had children and that’s why their kids preferred Tyrosh?

Robin

Now that would be telling. Stay tuned for the next chapter!

Tertius711

They were only away from Driftmark full time for ten years. For almost 35 years, Driftmark was their home together. All those other wonderful decades you speak of were spent on Driftmark. Rhaenys didn't miss that much tbf.

Tertius711

Would Corlys find her or would it be the other way around hmm? Anyway I was tempted to put something in there but there was a careful balance I had to maintain for the scene.

Tertius711

No but she did get blinded in the eye that got hit by bloodfire so she didn't escape unscathed.

Tertius711

Three more actually. 72, 73, and 74 will wrap up the Dance and the main storyline. 75 is the epilogue. Let's see if our beloved Corlys and Viserra will ever meet again!

Tertius711

Dang, what a way to go. I hope that they meet again in the next life, or the one after that. You said The Dance was only going to be like 5 chapters, right? So only 4 more? Plus an Epilogue...hopefully? Lol.

Edmeister

i kind of disagree with that, the Velaryon Liberation War feels a bit too modern for me and gives me American and French revolution vibes, which doesn't really fit here, this war is centered around a dynastic dispute so the Dance of Dragons or something like it work because it is a clash between two powerful dynasties.

Jordan Redstark

Did Syrax died?

Felipe Astur

Wow :) perfect

ksri

I love the “Velaryon Liberation War” Epithet and agree on the epilogue suggestion, definitely gave me vibes that they might get reincarnated. Possible sequel book idea for the author if he ever wants to return to this universe.

Jack K

Only thing I missed would be Corollys promise to Visera to find her again in his next life time. I know it's cliché but it would be sweet.

Tom Tat

Okay, so dying from pride over just a little stupid which makes Corlys and Viserra’s choice frustrating. Additionally, they had the twins only a year or so after getting married right? And then the boys were toddlers when the Conquest of the Stepstones happens and everything happened. So they’re dreaming of a time that was probably only 5 years long? And bemoaning the other wonderful decades? It comes off as shortsighted. Which is also frustrating to read. I did like the fight and I’m said we missed so much of it since Rhaenys was knocked out.

Robin

The apparent end of Vizera and Corlis. They made it epic. I know that you won’t reveal the plot until the next chapter, but at least tell me how many Targaryens the Velaryons were able to kill before Rhaenys woke up. P.S. I hope these will be the only losses of the Velaryons in this war.

Tariel Khalvashi

Gloria Corlys and Viserra !! Vae Rhaenys ;) Excellent update :) Didn't expect so long musings and remembering old good times, but it was very moving moment - especially about being reborn again. Maybe sth to include into Epilogue? Though I wouldn't like to be in Jaehaerys's place when Corlys and Viserra arrive in afterlife....... Battle sequence was a bit too short, but no one can disagree that MCs went down with a style and extracted heavy price ;) Rhaenys Crippled - not very glorious title.......... First blood of Dance of Dragons (or Velaryon Liberation War, as I called it in my mind) has been spilled, and first "battle" fought. Awaiting for more - though given last paragraphs one could assume that rest of Velaryons succeeded at least partially. In the end, one crucial question for my infobox - Visenya probably died, but what about Syrax? Was he injured moderately (half-blinded) or only superficially?

Maciek

The Targs are in serious trouble and have already lost strategically(they will be unable to accomplish their stated end goal of re-establishing their unquestioned superiority over the Velaryons, if anything this war will now firmly and officially establish the Velaryons as officially their peers and or now superiors due to their Valryian fire magic in the mind's of the world). Corlys and Viserra just by themselves have managed to kill 2 dragons, possibly maim a third in Syrax and the rest have likely killed the 3 dragons and their riders in Storm's End. This is all in the first 2 days of the conflict. Not to mention the Targs now know they can do scary fire magic in the sky that can take out the Targ riders and hurt their smaller non Vhagar dragons at a distance too. Any delusional hopes they had that they could take out the Velaryons(without they themselves also being taken out) have been brutally disabused.

NJ

All I can say is I can’t think of anything that would have made this farewell to the Final Lord and Lady of Drfitmark any better. They were our beloved protagonists through and through till the very end. Now the torch has passed to the next generation, and it’s time to see how the impact of the old has influenced the new.

Jack K

Salute Corlys, Viserra and Dreamfyre. Hope to see the Targs get their shit kicked in and the reaction to how Corlys and Viserra went out by the Targs

Grey Heart

My heart!!! I salute you, fallen Si At least that bitch Rhaenys paid for her pride. Here’s hoping their sacrifice did not go in vain.
