And I want to share an article I just read that reminds me, “It takes two to make a locker room!”
Alexandra Petri’s article in the Washington Post is about about Rep. Gaetz, who shows photos of his female sexual ‘conquests’ to colleagues on the House floor. But really, it's more about those on the receiving end of such behavior and how their responses continue a culture.
Petri asks us to step up, and change the future by making 'small awkward no’s’….
"I am not writing this for Matt Gaetz. I am talking to the person who was on the receiving end. The person who was presented with the photos and had a choice of how to respond. I am talking to the person whose nervous laugh, chuckle or back-slap normalizes this behavior.
I plea for those small awkward no’s. The moment will inevitably come for you to offer one. And just one person, one guy in a locker room, or around a campfire, or even on the floor of Congress, saying, uncomfortably, “What?” or “Why would you show someone that?” —can make a difference…It could reshape this whole place, if it happened enough."
I’m poised for my small awkward no’s, they are important. Love you, Charla
