Oh nahh I already know we're about to get crazy scenes where someone is on the verge of death but pulls out the "I was hiding my true power.....BANKAI 2.0!!!"

2024-11-05 02:04:09 +0000 UTCOf the three ways Tosen explained that it's possible to become a captain, the "Defeat a captain in a challenge with 200 witnesses" one is the only one available if there isn't a captain position already vacant - the other two (pass the exam or get voted in) are used for filling captain positions that are already empty. It's also (perhaps unsurprisingly) a tradition primarily associated with squad 11. Also, Bleach LOVES the "I was hiding my true power" trope, and Yumichika is my favourite example of it. He's not hiding his zanpakuto's true ability because it's forbidden or "too dangerous" or anything like that, but just because he thinks his friends would judge him for having a zanpakuto that's not a pure combat type, and he's so vain that he couldn't stand it if that happened.
