Fate/Extra: Last Encore Episode 9 (UNCUT REACTION)

I told you it was gonna be a fucking wall of text.

OneTrueReason

Holy shit.

CrypticBoss

Fuck this anime is SO WEIRD to explain without context.

OneTrueReason

Okay, now for the anime adaptation, Fate/Extra Last Encore. First episode starts during the final battle against Twice Pieceman, year is 2030 and the female version of Hakuno (in the community, we nickname her "Hakunon" to distinguish her from her male counterpart) alongside her Servant Nero lose their battle against Twice and his Servant, Saver, Buddha. That's why we said the anime follows a bad end from the game: you lost, Twice and his Servant seal off the Angelica Cage with its Noble Phantasm. Twice intentions are to make humanity keep fighting against itself, as he believes that war is the primary way by which humans evolve. So yeah, the girl you see in the first minute of the anime, armless and legless, is this series true MC, and now she's dead. After being sealed off, the Angelica Cage tries to reboot time and time again, each time recreating the events of the Holy Grail War, bringing back to life all data it has observed on Hakuno's Holy Grail War. So basically, the Moon Cell is trying to correct the events of Twice and make the Holy Grail War come to an end, but each time anyone makes it to the Angelica Cage, Twice ends up killing them. The regrets and hatred of all the dead Masters accumulate and eventually start creating these errors called Dead Faces, which are wraiths of pure hatred (basically, think of them as Jack the Ripper from Apocrypha). Okay now, our MC Hakuno, is one of these Dead Faces. He's a wraith created with Hakunon as a base, but containing the souls of hundreds upon hundreds of dead Masters.By this time, the rebooting process has been going for a thousand years, so the time is now 3030.and this is where the events of the anime start. This is why other people are calling this a time loop: while the original game does not have any time loop elements, the anime definitely does. This is also why Hakuno says in this episode he "is Hakuno Kishinami, but not the Hakuno Kishinami that Julius actually knows". Julius fought Hakunon in the past and. As Julius has also become a Dead Face (and this is why Li Shuwen is now corrupt and a Berserker class), he remembers having fought her (you know, the female version of Hakuno).

The plot of the game from that point "follows that of the anime", as you ascend floor by floor by exploring the dungeon of said floor (for exp and items) and face against another Master to qualify for ascending another floor. Keep in mind that there's no concept of "Floor Master" in the game, the competition is a bracket style tournament of 1v1s for 128 competitors, thus 7 floors being needed (128-64-32-16-8-4-2 and the 7th floor victor would be the winner). Either way, the face-offs (for the most part), remain the same, Floor 1 against Shinji and Rider Francis Drake, Floor 2 against Dan Blackmore and Archer Robin Hood, Floor 3 against Alice and Caster Nursery Rhyme. From this point on, the matchups are actually different: Floor 4, Run Ru and his Servant Lancer Vlad III, Floor 5 is against Julius B. Harway and his Servant Assassin Li Shuwen (yeah, in the anime, Li Shuwen is a Berserker, but that's because of it being corrupted), Floor 6 against Monji Gatou and his Servant Berserker Arcuied Brunestud (yeah, the Arcueid from Tsukihime is a Servant) and 7th Floor against Leo B. Harway and his Servant Saber Gawain. Once defeating Leo in floor 7, you're to make a wish to the Moon Cell inside its mainframe, the Angelica Cage. However, before ascending towards the Angelica Cage you encounter that Twice Pieceman is guarding it alongside his Servant, Saver, Buddha. This is the final boss of the game and you're to defeat him and then finish the game. The thing is, at floor 5, while facing Julius and Li Shuwen, Hakuno discovers that he/she is not actually a Hacker like the rest of the participants. They are an NPC based on a human named Hakuno Kishinami, who is comatose at a hospital on Earth suffering from amnesia, that somehow gained consciousness. That human's doctor was Twice Pieceman. It is also revealed that, because of the Moon Cell's firewall, any NPC that accessed the Angelica Cage would be deleted from existence, as NPCs are not supposed to interfere, and even less supposed to have desires of their own. So, in sumation, the Fate/Extra events, which elapse during the 2030, follow an NPC based on a comatose human on Earth that somehow gained consciousness and joined the Holy Grail War despite not actually qualifying for it. As I said previously, the goal is to wish for the restoration of Earth's mana and save the world from a slow decline and death. You get a Servant, win against every Master you face, including Twice, then make a wish to save Earth and get deleted. (Joke is on you, Extella exists and is a direct continuation of these events). THE END.

Okay, from the top. This is gonna be a long one, boys. First I'm gonna have to talk about the Fate/Extra game, which differs significantly from the anime. In the game you start handling a random unnamed student arriving at school for the day. Throughout the day, you start discovering strange things happening at school: you find Rin at the rooftop but she doesn't seem to acknowledge you're there, you hear other students talking about bets on who is the next one that's gonna end up dead and, by the end of the day, you catch someone (not gonna say who) literally phasing through a wall at the end of a hallway. So, you follow him and also phase though said wall and find yourself in kind of a gym storage room where you find a mannequin. When interacting with the mannequin, it springs to life and follows you. Then you exit through another door at the back of the room and find yourself in a labyrinth. This is the dungeon and combat tutorial of the game. At the end of the labyrinth you find a room full of student corpses and another mannequin standing in the middle of said room. No matter how you plan that fight, you're programmed to lose and die. Okay, so now that you're dead, the camera just jumps to ANOTHER student arriving at school the following day. THIS, THIS one is the protagonist of the game. You can choose the gender of your character before they appear on screen, models are non-customizable, and there's already a predetermined name for that character, Hakuno Kishinami, but you can change it to whatever you like. This is the magic of japanese language in that "Hakuno" is a gender neutral name in japanese, so it goes for both guys and girls. Now that you're in control of Hakuno, you're free to roam around the school but the game leads to follow the previous character's track and end up back at the labyrinth, to that room filled with corpses (your previous character is lying there too). Again, you lose, but this time, while agonizing, your willpower calls upon a Servant (again, you can choose from 3 Servant classes that will accompany you and this determines which "route" you're playing). At this stage is when everything about the Moon Cell is revealed to the player: that this is not the real world but a simulation inside a supercomputer placed inside the moon, that there's a Holy Grail War and that memories of living on Earth are blocked until you qualify for the war by killing another student. After the contract, Hakuno qualifies for the war despite not meeting the requirements to do so, as he/she hasn't technically killed anyone.

I figured you'd ask that lol. Essentially her reality marble is not infinite, it still requires mana from the master to function and lots of it so eventually it will run out. Also Neros base stats arent all that great, a lot of her power comes from her Imperial Privilege skill, in the end she was just a human so her reality marble is more of an equalizer when faced with servents that are much stronger, which tbh is a lot of them

Jarm957

I can't think of an instance off the top of my head where we've seen two reality marbles opposing each other, but apparently Nasu confirmed in an interview that that is basically how it would work, yeah. The stronger reality marble would override the other one.

Lex Garrett

CU WINNING FOR ONCE?! HOLY SHIT

CrypticBoss

We've seen other Servants resist the debuff of Aestus Domus Aurea. In the 5th Singularity, where Cú Alter and Queen Medb are the main antagonists, Nero is helping us. Nero along other 2 Servants ambush Cú Alter and manage to trap him inside her NP and even then, Cú defeats all 3.

OneTrueReason

Can anyone trapped in her domain expansion use their own domain expansion to override it?

CrypticBoss

So how can someone possibly win if they're trapped in her reality marble?

CrypticBoss

Yeah that makes sense since she was our first MC

CrypticBoss

So, since we get to see Nero's NP here (and from what I remember, Last Encore doesn't really give much more explanation of how it works than what we got in this episode) - Aestus Domus Aurea, or Golden Theatre of Debauchery, is a reality marble that's a recreation of the theatre Nero had built. In practical terms, it basically functions like a Domain Expansion in JJK. Everything within the theatre works to Nero's advantage, her attacks ignore enemy defences, and her enemies are progressively weakened over time.

Lex Garrett

Her Nobel Phantasm - Aestus Domus Aurea, is a reality marble that recreates the Domus Aurea aka the Golden House. It was a theater that Nero had built over the homes of the nobility after the great fire of Rome burned them down. It is a place where Nero can achieve her aspirations, an absolute imperial zone. Enemies in the realty marble get weaker and are not able to defend against Nero. Love the Nero love out here, she really is the best

Jarm957

Last Encore is a kind of sequel to the first Fate Extra. I don't recall if it's outright stated but it's implied that in game allows you to have a new game+ of sorts is that you're in a time loop. Last Encore seems to go with that premise but in one of the loops that had a bad end for Hakuno. This is why we get flashbacks of the female Hakuno and Saber that line up with Extra's storyline, all except in the very first episode where they lost to the BBEG

TheBelieveit1

LMAOOO don't worry man trust me I know cuz literally everyone warned me that I'll be the most confused I've ever been watching Fate if I check out extra last Encore without playing the game 💀 But I must say tho it doesn't "ruin" the fun for me tho like I still enjoy seeing these new concepts and characters. Of course knowing exactly what's going on would better the experience but it's been pretty fun so far! Also thanks for the explanations but don't stress it if you don't wanna get into it 😭

CrypticBoss

Cryptic, ma man, it's clear you're not understanding almost anything at this point, which I don't blame you for. The anime doesn't care for explaining much of anything for anyone unfamiliar with the Fate/Extra game, but, for real, is SO DAMN LATE HERE. I CANNOT be bothered to write the essay needed to explain all this shitshow of an anime this late at night. Prepare yourself for tomorrow, though, the wall of text might be dropping tomorrow morning, which roughly translates to around 2 AM in Canada, so sleep sound for a dissertation tomorrow morning.
