Even if Patreon is demanding more money, it's not like they keep it for themselves. The extra simply goes into the creators' pockets, which is kind of the whole purpose of the platform to begin with. And while making the 'customer' bear this burden might seem problematic or unfair, people need to keep in mind this is exactly what VAT does. That being said, any sort of public outcry was because, at the end of the day, nobody likes being forced into anything without warning, regardless of how 'good' it is. This whole 'donator handling the charges' thing is by no means original, as other payment platforms also incorporate it. However, it's been more as an opt-in feature rather than a mandatory thing. If Patreon made this thing optional so that each patron can choose whether they wanna give that extra bit of monetary support to content creators, I imagine it would've been accepted more readily. So to sum it up - I think Patreon had a good idea, but executed it poorly.
