It was mentioned in the first movie that Haymitch had won The Hunger Games. That is why he is a mentor for Katniss and Peeta when they were reaped for the 74th Hunger Games. It was also mentioned that District 12 doesn’t often have winners, so Haymitch’s victory was a surprise to a lot as well. In this movie it’s clear that before Katniss and Peeta, there weren’t any other victors after Haymitch. So imagine mentoring tributes for many years, to see them killed in the Hunger Games every single year. As you mentioned, it’s clear why he is a drunk. Even in this movie he claims no one really “wins,” the Hunger Games because yes, Haymitch won, but at what cost? The terror in Snow’s eyes when he can no longer see the games 🤣 Can’t wait for Mockingjay Part 1 😁
