Triggerman- Thank you so much for another great reaction for an episode I actually really love a lot, Reds! I can certainly understand why you feel as you do regarding this episode and its abrupt ending, but I actually quite like it for the overall storyline, as well as for both Riley's and Annie's characters. I really like their characters throughout this episode a lot, and I even feel sympathy for Riley, and sad that he's killed, even though I did have a pretty good feeling that he wouldn't survive by the ending too.
I really love this episode a lot, especially for the main story and seeing Reese struggling to deal with whether or not he should save Riley, because he struggles with whether or not he's worthy of being saved himself. I also really like how Finch starts to call Riley bad code, but immediately cuts himself off upon realizing that he was using the exact words Root used to describe someone people not consider worth saving. And if you remember from the previous episode, titled... Bad Code, Finch actually tells Root that Reese is proof that people can change and be better men no matter their background. He's proof that not all humans are bad code. And I believe that by the end of this episode, after talking with Reese about Riley and how they should deal with him, Finch most certainly comes to understand that he had been wrong to assume the worst in Riley too. Because he remembered his own words to Root about Reese. I absolutely love this!! :)
As for why Reese comes after the hitman in the end... It's because the guy killed Riley. While Riley is as much a perpetrator as he is a victim, Reese sees himself in Riley and it once again makes him doubt whether or not he too is worth being saved. So, failing to save Riley has become personal to him, and Reese felt he owed it to Riley and Annie to avenge his death. And I really appreciate this a lot. Because I do sympathize with Riley. And yes... he made some terrible mistakes, but Annie did change him for the better. And had he been given the chance, I do believe that Riley and Annie could have been happy together, in spite of Riley also being the man who killed her husband. I think that in the ending, she knew that he had killed her husband, and yet she understood and still loved Riley anyways. Which is really kind of beautiful, even if it is somewhat twisted. It's complicated. But this is proof that people can always change for the better if given the chance to.
Overall... I really love this episode a lot, and like always... I absolutely love seeing Elias again too. A way to remind us that he's still around, and that he is still very much a threat and/or an ally. I love seeing Finch's first meeting with Elias. And I really love seeing Finch return to the prison to play chess with Elias upon making a deal with him to be his chess partner. It establishes a new relationship between these two cunning men who prefer to stay in the background of their operations. Very interesting. :)
Thank you so much, my friend! Until next time...
Sincerely,
Heidi
