My Fair Lady- Yay!!! Thank you very much for your reaction to such a beautiful movie, Reds!! I absolutely love this movie, and I love Audrey Hepburn, as well as Rex Harrison who plays Professor Henry Higgins. And I enjoyed your reaction. Please don't feel bad for feeling so tired, or for perhaps not really enjoying this movie as if you should feel any differently about it. I most certainly understand your annoyance with Professor Higgins. I may love his character and Rex Harrison as Higgins, but he is absolutely infuriating. In a strange way, this is the charm of his character. And I appreciate his character and his actor for this reason.
Audrey Hepburn is a phenomenal actress, and she's one of my very favorites. And her role as Eliza Doolittle is beyond reproach. She's beautiful in this movie. Funny, witty, and I just adore watching My Fair Lady over and over as she goes up against "poor Professor Higgins."
Professor Henry Higgins makes me laugh so hard in this movie and while he's conceited and thinks only of himself, I can't help but admire his tenacity. And I love his songs as he sings about why women can't be more like him, or how he's too good to let a woman in his life. Rex Harrison's way of singing is so different from anyone else in other musicals, including back in the early days of musicals. And I just love it.
As for my favorite songs... I love Eliza's songs, Wouldn't It Be Loverly and I could Have Danced All Night. I also love Henry Higgins' song, I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face. I love all of the songs, but these just stand out to me a bit more so than the rest.
Now... I absolutely love how Eliza doesn't wind up in love Freddy, as she returns to Henry Higgins in the end because the two have found love. Not so much a romantic kind of love because their relationship is beyond just romance, even if the hint of romance is there. But a very deep friendship built up from respect and admiration. It's quite beautiful and the ending couldn't be more perfect for two such strong willed characters. Henry Higgins doesn't deserve to have Eliza come back into his life with how he treats her, but in the final scenes and in their final songs together, you can see that Henry has grown and even changed a little. He isn't able to admit it or even understand it in one afternoon, but I feel over time... had this movie continued on to expand on their relationship after Eliza returns to him, I do believe we might have seen a much bigger change in him too, much like we see the change in Eliza as she grows throughout this movie. And this is the theme and message within this movie. Both Eliza and Henry are good for one another. Despite his inability to see past himself, Henry has helped Eliza grow a backbone and to think for herself. And he even admits to her that he likes the changes in her. And Eliza has most certainly changed his own outlook, and has made him see that he's not perfect like he likes to believe he is. I love their relationship. I absolutely love seeing Eliza finally put Henry Higgins in his place and knocking him down when no one else has ever been able to do so including his own mother. Eliza needed his help to learn how to speak properly so she could become a lady and to find her voice, while he needed her help to discover that he isn't the most perfect human being alive and to show him that he can treat others with respect and kindness without people seeing him as weak.
And lastly... Audrey Hepburn sadly doesn't sing any of her own songs in this movie. Her singing voice is actually Marni Nixon who is known for not only being Eliza's singing voice, but also several other actresses' singing voices in classic musicals such as West Side Story, The King and I, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Alice in Wonderland, and Mulan. Audrey Hepburn was disappointed they wouldn't allow her to sing for herself, but the director of My Fair Lady felt that Eliza Doolittle needed a stronger voice than what Audrey had. It's seems sad, and I feel bad for Audrey Hepburn because she couldn't sing for herself. However, Marni Nixon is phenomenal and so I understand the director's decision too.
Overall... I love this movie so much, and I easily consider it to be one of my all time favorite musicals, along with Singin' in the Rain, Fiddler on the Roof, The Music Man, etc... So, thank you very much again, Reds! I am so happy you watched this movie for me, and I enjoyed watching My Fair Lady again with you so much. :) And now... I look forward to your next reactions like always, and will continue to request more classic musicals down the road, so long as you're interested in watching them, of course. Until your next reactions for more movies, as well as for more Once Upon a Time, Lucifer, and Person of Interest, dear friend...
Thank you!!
Sincerely,
Heidi
