Wonderful! i'm so glad to hear you weren't offended, and that this performance didn't affect what you thought of the overall movie.
Thank you so much, Reds! And yes... I am excited to continue requesting more movies for you to enjoy!! Until January, and until more of your reactions for my favorite shows too...
Sincerely,
Heidi

Holiday Inn- First and foremost... thank you once again for another beautiful movie reaction for a Christmas I just absolutely love and adore, as I have for as long as I can remember. Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire are phenomenal actors, as well as geniuses within what they do best... sing and dance. And I am truly happy you enjoyed this movie for the most part as well. I know it wasn't a great movie for you, but I am happy that you atleast laughed and had fun throughout it.
And secondly, if not equally... I do sincerely apologize to you for requesting you to watch a movie for me that many today would sadly see to be controversial because of the scenes and musical number they performed for Lincoln's birthday. I honestly thought nothing of it. Like I said above... I have watched this movie every year at Christmastime with my family or on my own for as long as I can remember, and it's a movie I love. In my eyes... I see nothing wrong or inappropriate about this musical number. Although, I know that many would disagree with me.
yes... the stars, Bing Crosby and Marjorie Reynolds do a Black face number. This music number shows the characters' way of honoring Abraham Lincoln for his birthday on February 12th. And to show this... they paint their faces black as a way of showing the men and women back them honoring and praising the man who made it possible for them to become free and equal. This is all. Nowadays, there are many people who sadly don't see Lincoln to be a good man and the hero he once was. And yet back then, in these days before all men were free, he was a hero. And in my eyes, he still is. And those who became free thanks to him saw him as such too. The former slaves and all Black men and women praised Lincoln. This is simply all this song shows. It was never, ever intentioned to offend anyone.
I do sincerely hope I haven't offended you by trying to defend a song that to me is innocent even now, Reds. I just want you to know this. It's just that it was a different time back when this movie was made. Back when people weren't so easily offended by things that were never meant to offend anyone. There was no controversy in the forties. Or at least, not like there is today and it's so, so sad. And in my opinion, people should not condemn or slam a movie today that was made so long ago when this was so.
Now... I absolutely love both Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire. They are both brilliant actors, and more so... brilliant in how they both perform. Bing Crosby's voice is unique and absolutely beautiful. I could most certainly fall asleep listening to his soothing voice as he sings. And Fred Astaire is definitely one of the best dancers to have ever lived, along with Gene Kelly... another sensational dancer and actor I love very much too! Fred Astaire amazes me with his dancing talent every time I watch his movies.
Also... Marjorie Reynolds who plays Linda Mason, and Virginia Dale who plays Lilla Dixon are really fantastic throughout this movie as well. Marjorie Reynold's voice is absolutely gorgeous, and I am always amazed at how well Virginia Dale is able to keep up with Fred Astaire in their dance numbers. She's fantstic! And I love their characters very much as well.
Just as I love Walter Abel who plays Danny Reed as well. He's so funny all throughout this movie. And I can't help but laugh whenever he's onscreen.
As for my favorite songs and musical performances throughout Holiday Inn... my absolute favorite is of course White Christmas, sung and performed by both Bing Crosby and Marjorie Reynolds. Now.. this is the very first movie in which White Christmas has ever been performed in, and no one deserves the honor to sing such a powerful and beautiful song more than Bing Crosby, who easily sings my favorite version of this song. I also really love I'll Capture Your Heart Singing, first sung and perfromed by Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire, and Virginia Dale, then is joined by Marjorie Reynolds when this number is reprised in the end as well. And the number performed for Washington's birthday... I Can't Tell a Lie is absolutely hilarious because of Jim's (Bing Crosby) efforts to sabotage Ted (Fred Astaire) enough so he can't kiss Linda (Marjorie Reynolds). And of course... I absolutely love Fred Astaire's dance number with the fireworks performed for Independence Day. This dance performance is absolutely incredible, and so much fun to watch! Honestly, I love every song throughout this movie, but if I have to list my favorites, these mentioned just slightly stand out above the rest.
And lastly... I just absolutely love the story and romances throughout this movie. I love Jim Hardy and Linda Mason together, and I love Ted Hanover with Lilla Dixon too. Yes... the romances within this movie are quite different than most romances are in the movies. But then... romances in movies throughout this classic era are all quite different and unique compared to how they're written in movies today. And I truly appreciate them for this reason. And love them for this reason. Oh... and Danny Reed is hilarious. I love this movie's humor, the banter between the men, the music, and I absolutely love seeing this movie in black and white just as it was originally made. There is absolutely something very special about watching these movies from the early days in Hollywood, just as they were made and meant to be watched.
So, thank you so very much for watching this movie again for me, Reds. I appreciate you watching this movie for me. And once again... I do sincerely hope I haven't offended you in any way. I most certainly don't mean to. I just wanted to try to explain why this number was written and performed within this movie.
You're amazing, Reds! And I am so grateful to be able to continue watching the movies and shows with you that I love. I cannot wait for your reactions for more Once Upon a Time, Lucifer, and Person of Interest too!! I wish you all the joy and happiness in the world, dear friend. :)
Thank you!
Sincerely,
Heidi
