Midnight came and it was different than usual.
The dark night was filled with lights from fireworks. The noises that firecrackers made were ringing in my ears.
This night was lively as fuck! So much that my adrenaline was rushing.
I looked around and found my two children jumping. Just like I said last time-- If you jumped in New Year, you will grow taller.
I don't know where this superstition came from but there are trying it. Now that I think about it... Why don't I jump as well?
I'm already tall in my opinion, 5'11 feet. However, another inch would not be bad.
So in the end, I decided to jump as well.
My wife saw me jumping and giggled. She watched us jumping like crazy while the fireworks were shimmering.
Now, you're probably wondering why the village can light up fireworks. The answer is no, the village didn't have enough cash to buy fireworks.
However, the city next to us can. The fireworks that were seeing right now were from the city... So yeah, we're joining their fun.
Because the kids had a proper sleep earlier, they were still lively and awake.
Minutes passed and the noises gradually faded. Even our house became much quiet. Of course, before we take a rest, Alberto and Corazon invited us to dinner.
The food was delicious as always. I chopped the woods by the way. Life in the province was simple and fulfilling.
I remember what my friends told me-- It was impossible to be hungry in the province unless you're a picky eater.
I tell you, we have an endless supply of green vegetables! Heck, even on the side of the roads you can find malunggay leaves! Enough to make soup.
However, the food in the province was not usually delicious. They mostly eat vegetables.
Even a can of sardines was a delicacy back in the early 60s. Nobody had it better. I even heard a rumor that people would kill for a can of sardines. Thank God I didn't reincarnate in that era. I'm already good with 1999.
"Honey."
I turned to my wife who was calling me. She smiled and gave me a peck on my cheek.
"Happy New Year."
"Happy New Year too! I love you."
"I love you."
It was a good thing that the dining room was lively and everyone was busy with their lives, or else our quick flirting would be awkward.
"Jajjy, I want cwake!"
"Sweetheart, eat what's in your mouth first."
"Yesh!"
Sophia was surely feasting on the cake this time. Unlike last time when the cake easily disappeared, Corazon specifically ordered two big cakes this time.
The kids were like piranhas slowly devouring the cakes.
After eating a sumptuous meal, we returned to our room and fall asleep. The first hour of New Year was hype, but then the next hours would be boring and tiring. So of course, sleep was the best answer.
Even though we slept after the New Year Celebration, we were still tired when we woke up.
Sophia was sleepy and she only woke up after noon.
"Mommy, I want milk... Haaam..." She yawned and wiped her face adorably.
"Aww, how's my cute little princess?"
"Mommy, I don't want to stay up all nwight again."
"Fufu," Penelope giggled hearing her answer, and kissed her forehead.
"I'll prepare one for you?"
While Penelope came downstairs, I was left with my two children.
"How's the New Year? It's great right?" I asked them to ease the atmosphere.
"Dad, we look like a monkey jumping for food."
Roman shook his head and frowned. There were clear dark circles around his eyes.
"Roman, I advise you to sleep again. You really look like a monkey right now."
"..."
He didn't bother talking to me again and solved his Rubik's cube instead. Perhaps my son saw me as a nuisance.
Out of all of us, I was the only one who had it better. Because of the Energy pill that I took yesterday, I was not affected by the lack of sleep.
We are going to leave the Province on January 3. Roman has to return on Monday so we can't stay in the province any longer. Thankfully, the kids had enough days to spend time with their relatives.
When Penelope returned, I realized that she looked disheartened.
"What's wrong Honey?"
I frowned and asked her. Penelope shook her head and she didn't know how to answer.
"It's nothing... I just saw Billy outside, crying over something. I tried to approach him but Señorita was next to him."
"Waaahhh--!! Waaahhh--! Mama! I don't want it! I promise I'll be a good boy-! Waaahhh--!"
Speak of the devil.
The voice was from Billy, screaming hysterically as if he was getting beaten.
My wife and I looked at each other. Should we stop what Señorita was doing?
"You bastard! Who told you to touch these things? They are dirty! They came from that prodigal aunt of yours! The one who spread her legs just to hook a rich man! Hah! Look what happened then?"
Señorita snorted and kicked her child.
"The rich man was disowned by his family and became poor! I tell you! Don't ever get close to them again! They are bad luck! Don't ever accept their presents! They are bad luck! Look what happened to me because your aunt failed to finish college? Hah!"
"Waaahhh--!"
This bitch! I can't believe that she would say something horrible like that.
Suddenly, I looked at my wife and she was mad. Her red eyes were glowing deeper and more dangerously.
I subconsciously gulped.
Penelope gave the milk to Sophia and went downstairs. Her steps were slow but heavy.
"Oh God, I have to follow her! Roman, take care of Sophia while I'm gone!"
