Alice's answer:

"Well... I know that many many many people were sad about Oliver's absence in the show, and this was a really easy way to get him back in. Oliver is a big presence in the This Winter novella and it was a very easy solution to turn him into a cousin and then let him have almost exactly the same role as he has in that novella! It's a really great way to get Oliver into the show because it's very contained, it functions like a cameo; we don't need to worry about things like the actor aging quicker than the story, and he doesn't take away massive amounts of screentime from more important storylines (as he would if he was a brother and had to be present every time we are at the Spring house). It's also in many ways just a really lovely nod to the fans of the comics and the Spring sibling relationships!"
