GeoWizard drunkenly debates his whereabouts on an 1668 map of London

*EDIT* The $4 crew couldn't name the pub so I'm handing it over to the $1 army to see if they can get it.

This weekend just gone I was down in London with Verity. The main purpose of the trip was my appearance on Jaackmaate's happy hour podcast which was thoroughly enjoyable (and should be released in the next couple of weeks).

On Saturday evening, Verity and I met up with an old friend of mine, George Jones (from the kayak trip story) for some drinks. After 3 pints we ended up in a somewhat strange pub in West London. Inside the pub on the back wall was a giant map of London which was clearly very old as there was only one bridge and hardly anything south of the Thames. St Pauls Cathedral was on there though so it can't have been too old. Whilst trying to figure out when exactly the map was drawn we got into a debate with a group of middle aged (Lebanese?) men about where we physically were on the map. A half pissed Irish landlord staggered over and told us off for touching the map, before fully engaging in the debate. I was adamant that we were in fact off the map and to the left, but others disagreed. Depending on what extent you trust my judgement, maybe you can figure out which pub we were in? (I bleeped out any mention of the pub in the video)

Soon after this jolly scene, the Lebanese man seen at the start began saying that George's friend (female) was the spitting image of a "girl he knew". He then proceeded to ring her up and invite her down to the pub. Half an hour later a rough looking prostitute walks in and stands at our table for 5 awkward seconds while the two girls are introduced. She bared no resemblance to George's friend what so ever. Neither of them were pleased.

We then got on some Boris bikes and hit a club in Mayfair, danced to some pure cheese dancefloor classics, and me and George wrestled drunkenly on the street afterwards.

Apologies about the shit video format.

Correct! sorry for the late response! well done. Didn't see Thomas's guess though?

tom davies

Love it how this is kind of the reverse of ‘Guessing the exact location of my fans’: fans guessing the location of Tom!

Nout van Deijck

I agree, has to be.

https://goo.gl/maps/HHiSM5CgbVqzFpRH6 Has to be, looks like they've just given the wall a lick of white paint

I think it's the Monkey Puzzle since they have a picture of the landlord on their website who looks pretty similar to the chap in the video. (Thomas Milner guessed Monkey Puzzle 2 days ago so if it's right credit to him.)

I suppose there isn't really much of a definitive way of knowing when you've found it is there.. well, I'll leave it open just in case someone somehow works it out. Thanks for trying!

I've just spent far too long searching all the pubs in Mayfair/Marylebone/Paddington... I give up, back to work it is.

Paul Roddam

I googled pubs near Marble Arch and came up with The Heron. Also, can’t wait to listen to you on the happy hour podcast!

Mark Furniss

have you let jay foreman have a go at it?

Wow good find Joe. Fascinating map reading isn't it.

tom davies

hahaha mate as if. Yeah looked at my bank statements and it weren't pretty.

tom davies

not far off

tom davies

Can't find the pub but I did manage to find the map, though controversially it says 1682 on it! (In the tree on the left hand side) https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/ec/London_actually_surveyed_by_Wm_Morgan_1682.jpg

I’m paying you back for the drinks at loop bar by subscribing to your patreon. Should be even in around 18 months…

I looked at the map for 30 minutes and couldn’t find anything that looks like it. You must be in the back of Tesco right?

Kito

"So what do you do?" *Proceeds to point at giant map and debate everyone in the pub about where we actually are* Yup, pretty much sums it up.

Shane Ewing

I was going to say somewhere near Paddington?

Not too far off!

tom davies

Thanks man I’m hoping it won’t disappoint. We bounced off one another quite nicely!

tom davies

Haha I know man. You got to be so careful these days. Dreading the day something awful leaks 😬😅

tom davies

Still remember back those days when you got boozed and nobody was able to film you 🤣

Lad you have no idea how excited I am for your apperance on Happy Hour, been a die hard of that podcas for the last year, I am so excited for this!

I think there was a St Pauls before the rebuilt one post fire of London. Not sure ill be able to figure out what pub youre in though... I am guessing its near Marble Arch?

Can't wait to hear you on happy hour. A great podcast and I shall wait eagerly for it's release!
