Attempting to cross SCOTLAND in a completely straight line. (PART 3: PISSED OFF FARMER)

Here it is. A day late, but early. If that makes any sense.

*Watch in 1440p and with subtitles for full effect*
*COMMENTS MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS*

Join myself and Welsh Greg as we embark on a gruelling 6 day adventure in which we attempt across Scotland in a completely straight line. In Part 2 you saw us continue day one's fine progress, successfully negotiating some pretty gnarly obstacles and talking our way out of a pickle with a concerned farmer. Now though, having made it to a lovely secluded clearing in the forest where we camped the night, it was time to ascend into the remote and stress free landscape of the moors and make as much ground as possible before camping the night. Sounds straight forward enough, but a seriously pissed off farmer had other ideas..

Covid restrictions are never going away mate

Please try this again when Covid restrictions are gone. This time, use it in some form as a fundraiser, perhaps for Addison's Disease research; that way if you do get caught, folks are far less likely to have any problem and even if they do object, they won't be as strict or mean about their reactions.

What happened to bonus footage episode 1? I got the email today that it was uploaded but when I click the link I get a 404 error =(

So proud of this attempt and the decision you made! Can't wait for the next one.

Nova Scotia in Canada would be a good idea! There are parts where it's only about 80km across from side to side. There are also just plenty of other options in Canada, lots of room

My sister and I (who have been following this) decided to watch this one with our whole family, and our parents especially loved it. My dad said "they have such fun language!!" and everyone's general consensus was that you did the right thing (though my dad's doctor-opinion was that the farmer shouldn't have been worried about COVID since the odds of you all passing it to him was slim to none. We reminded him not everyone is a scientist.) My mom wants to know if you're sponsored (with the camo suit. She things you definitely are!) Thanks again for sharing all this with us, you both are the best!

it all makes the achievement feel more illusive and prestigous. what are the other destinations? if you try in Qatar or Bahrain you really need to worry about the local police because they are brutal. and the heat is even worse than them. i think Latvia is a good option, super flat and if you go north-south from/to bay of Riga it's not that long, maybe 70km. also a very rural place! just need to check local laws.

Did not see that twist coming at the end after the farmer interaction! Gutted there’s not gonna be an episode next week but you did the right thing.

I guess you think about the narrow stretch between Schleswig and Husum. While not a big distance, I think there might be quite some obstacles. I wouldn't recommend crossing the A7 motorway during the day, due to heavy traffic (it is the main traffic axis to Denmark/Scandinavia after all) and a good amount of cars driving at insane speeds. Even at night, it will be tricky to stay clear of oncoming speed junkeys. If it ever happens, I'd happily help in making that mission reality, though.

Sebastian

Scotland too has a 'right to roam', however covid superseded that in this case, more to do with crossing the border illegally too, though even a native scot would have likely got in trouble if they had attempted the same thing

I actually think, he called the cops before he went up there - he couldn't know what these guys are up to and makes sense in this way. Because of Covid, they had to act, even if the farmer was cool about it. If the Farmer had problems with it, they wouldn't be allowed to stay on his ground for the night. I don't think, he is to "blame" - if one could say blame anyway. ;)

I switched to Solo Stove, burns like a gas stove as well when the secundary burn comes in place - but is fired with wood. But Gas might come to favor, if you have to cool it down fast ;)

Germany might be a great choice as well - on of the biggest countries, but in Schleswig Holstein kind of tight with 33km from baltic- to north sea. Camping is not allowed, though biwi is kind of accepted. If not in a nature protection area and most people would be very pissed about making a fire... Also I wouldn't go too military =D

Go on a mission in Sweden. With our "freedom to roam" law, you will avoid many problems!

Robin Fredriksson

That farmer was an arsehole. He wasnt afraid of covid at all, he just used it as an excuse to fuck yous off cause he is a crank. He also trapped yous there and called the cops, which is awful form. Speaking with the cops gave me flashbacks to my youth, was very uncomfortable. Look forward to future content !

Honestly I would have thought that by a) doing the trip in the first place then b) posting it all online, that you were aware and prepared to accept potential legal consequences. For you it's your job and passion, breaking the law comes with the territory unfortunately. Maybe next time if you want to take the risks it's got to be solo :/

I agree, telling them to piss off originally would've been okay, but it was bizarre that he said they could stay and then later called the cops

Whatta go at it. I can’t say I’m upset at all with the way that ended. As much as I want Greg to get that victory, it’s just a classic ‘live to see another line’ situation. Not worth whatever wild charges they would’ve ended up throwing at you. Great series and I can’t wait for the line review.

Jake

Gas stove is a must next time IMO, more concealed spots to camp... and maybe binoculars are needed! Re-ignite that paranoia you had from the original wales video and I think you would have made it. Sorry it didn't work out, but thank you for the great content, none the less. The videos wouldn't be the same if it was a guaranteed success each time

Not going to lie, I feel you absolutely could have pulled off just finishing the trip. It would've added an extra layer of tenseness to it, but I think you were spot on about them warning you that you'd get caught and how they just say that when it might not be the case. Also that farmer was a total dick, even if he changed his mind it's a dishonorable thing to do in my opinion. Regardless, another amazing adventure and I can't wait for the next one. Wales 3 would absolutely be awesome to see. Never get tired of it.

Absolutely. Almost like he made all of that up just so he knew they would get caught and not run off.

I mean, that's just not true. Shiey uploads far sketchier stuff.

It was the right choice for sure, but man, it hurts to see all that effort put in to have it end like this! Good job as always, and I look forward to the next one!

Well now you know that once you're spotted, it's time to go, also I'd recommend using a gas stove for cooking since it has no flame in sight.

João Costa

Scotland has very similar laws, it was more to do with covid restrictions than camping laws

Thats the advantage of Sweden and Norway. You may camp and walk free, as long as you are not in someones yard. But in the forest or in a field, its legal.

Thinking about the feasibility of a straight line mission across a US state, the law would be a major issue. While the cops tend to be a bit more laid-back in rural areas, depending on their moods and state law you could get into far worse trouble if you were caught on someone's land like that. Great series, regardless of how it ended, looking forward to Welsh Greg one day getting his successful attempt.

It’s public on YouTube now <3

Was working, watched half the video. Paused for 5 mins. now says private video

Terry Shiells

^^ same. Wish I had went to watch it earlier now...

Sierra Shellabarger

Video is private :( ah my Sunday night plans :(

Same, can’t play it :(

^ same

Private video?

Adam William

This will be your most divisive series in the eyes of a few, but this is all a learning experience. Nice work.

You definitely made the right decision. If you were even spotted, and called in, the police have your info, and would know exactly who the subjects were. We'd rather have you back safe and sound, to tackle another straight line, then end up wrapped up in a bunch of legal trouble.

Exactly what I was thinking :D

Aside from the legality of many other things like crossing high speed railroads, motorways, factories, ... ;-)

Don't think it would count, although would be fun to watch.

I hope they continue the mission from where they left off after the covid situation gets better. The record would still count in my opinion

no

But wait, it doesn’t say END in the title… episode 4 foreshadowing?

Eurekify!

Damn :/ Didn't expect that from the teaser - thought it was just going to be a little bit of action that amounted to nothing. Once the police get involved though, absolutely the right call to follow their direction, and call it off. Great series anyway - thanks for all the content. we're hanging out for your next crazy mission :)

Absolutely gutted for you and Greg but you definitely made the right decision. Even with the disappointing result you still gave us 3 epic videos. Look forward to the teased missions in the future. 🤟

Mark Furniss

Sad to see the series come to an end so quickly, and to have it end on such a quick note such as that, although I do understand the reasoning behind it. Glad you guys made the right decision, because the beginning of the conversations was very tense and had me feeling very nervous, and didn't want to have to worry about watching more of that😉😂 I'm excited to see your guys' next mission tho! Thanks for everything Tom+Welsh Greg;) you guys are truly the best! Cheers! - Ethan from Utah, USA

Ethan Page

As long as lockdown is over then it’s probably okay to do. You did see quite a few people but mostly they were far off. When Scotland and the rest of the UK are completely out of lockdown it’s very doable. Seeing your pace in the bits you did do I think it was either going to be a completed line or this as the ending.

I had wondered about the legality of doing this during lockdown, to be fair. You made the right call though and, failed mission aside, it made for a great three videos!

Podey Williams

Proud of your decision but tough after all the work you both put in. If it is any consolation, it seems that you accomplished the toughest part of this mission only to get snagged with bad luck, but it so easily could have happened early in the trip. Fully believe you guys would have cruised to the finish at a different time covid wise.

JJ Hennessey

Its called Patagonia Bioceánica, basically its the southern part of Argentina and Chile

HDdiamonds

That farmer needs to relax - he told you it was okay, then called the cops later? I respect your take on it, and you handled it well. But I'm not going to sit here and pretend he wasn't being unreasonable by calling the cops on you after telling you it was okay to camp on his property after giving you a (fair and well deserved) telling off. Just a rotten thing to do imo.

Meat_Flapz

Nobody commenting about that absolute strike of a snowball toss to the center of Greg's back.

Guessing the wife or something told him to do it.

William

Aww, great episode. Sorry it ended like it did. The main thing that bothered me is the irrational fear of covid transmission. I'm all for safety and minimizing transmission. But there's sooo little risk with the great outdoors. Also the farmer literally came over to you guys to say he was scared about covid and then got two other guys to come over to you guys. He could have just let it go. If he was really worried about transmission he shouldn't have come close to you. I know you were really polite and were really good about not blaming him and stuff, but it irks me. It's irrational fear, and it makes people make bad decisions. You're not tourists just coming in and being cavalier and whatnot. You had a mission. You were reasonable and respectful. I really hope the farmer sees these videos somehow and feels a nice big pang of regret for calling the cops on you when you weren't harming anyone.

https://www.crwflags.com/FOTW/FLAGS/ar_pbo.html the actual flag - Patagonia Bioceanica

Nuno Salvaterra

Where are you guys seeing the teaser flags? Is he actually doing Patagonia?

Better and better with each mission (gloves [this has to be a meme by now], glasses, overall preparation and scouting), you are giving strength to a lot of people sitting on their arses since the start of pandemic, hell I want to do (much shorter) straight line mission on my own. You are inspiring, exciting and truly mischevious! I bow to you Tom!

Well done to the both of you! Definitely made the right decision to not go on. Looking forward to what you have planned up next!

bloody sad mates, proper sad right now. Understandable, but still kinda cheecky from that farmer. Big ups still, hope you get to finish one with welsh greg soon.

I saw a post about you today on the Guardian website. Mentioned you and Greg and your crazy adventures. At first I was like wtf no, this is my little niche. I love this content and I dont want you to spoil it with public attraction... but then I realised no, I want you to achieve as much as possible, you are quite literally the best content creator on YouTube. I tune into every straight line mission as soon as it comes out without fail. There has never been a series on TV that has had me as hooked as this. You are the future of YouTube and Entertainment. Love you guys. Always remember... Only those who dare to fail greatly will ever succeed greatly. EDIT: I wrote this before I watched episode 3 and now my final sign off comment seems a bit cheeky. You guys did the right thing packing up there and you get massive respect for that. But more imortantly, you really did dare to fail. Hats off to you. Can't wait to see more content.

Josh Stevenson

You guys did the right thing. It’s obviously not the outcome we were looking for, but you said it. It’s the right the to do. For me a reason to support you even more. Doing the right thing is not always easy but it makes you a good person, which is more important then making this mission and being a dick. I am excited for the next adventure with you guys. Great work. Thank you.

Alex M.

Fantastic series! There's no doubt whatsoever that you made the right decision. Regardless of the final result, you've given us all loads of solid entertainment and kept us on the edges of your seats throughout the series. Thanks from Canada.

SeaJay

You just know that farmers wife had a go at him and made him phone the old bill

Shaun saunders

Gutted you boys got so far into this one without any trouble to hit that snag near the end. But you definitely made the right call packing up and heading home. It's easy to sit here and say you could have finished the mission but it wasn't worth the potential legal trouble if you were stopped again. Wasn't meant to be this time but another top effort. There's definitely a platinum run in there for you lads in the post covid future!

Part of me was hoping you’d just carry on regardless 🥲

Absolutely gutted for you both. But you did the right thing.

I know you must feel defeated. But I'm proud of your decision. Good job on befriending the police, but perhaps you must not have instantly explained that you are about to commit several trespassings in the next days. After this the police had no other option but to disallow your mission. Hope the next attempt will be soon.

Atticus Mato

Sidenote: As a non-native speaker it was *so hard* to understand what the heck those police men were saying. What an awesome accent.

Sven Grunewaldt

Oh man, I'm a bit sad this ended now. Especially after seeing the plan what would come after stash two. BUT: I think you did the right thing. If the police men were correct and you'd stumble over people left and right further along the line, the ONLY right thing to do was abort the mission. We have to support and take care of each other during this pandemic. Thank you for all the work you put into those three episodes. I enjoyed them a lot and am looking forward to the next mission!

Sven Grunewaldt

I'm assuming he must of spoke to a family member who was disapproving of his decision not to call the cops. He did seem torn between being sound and being pissed off, so I reckon he'd be easily swayed on it by someone else..? Just a thought though obviously and still gutted about the result, even if it made for some great content !

You couldn’t have posted it to YouTube if you decided to go on from there. You would have been in some legal jeopardy if you did. Good call.

Ryan Krasman

Looking forward to the Qatar straight line mission. Couldn't recognize the other flag.

I feel like if the police wouldn’t have gotten involved and you’d finished the mission, a gift basket would be in order for that farmer.

I thought the same thing with the "can I help yoos" farmer from the day before, who implied they were endangering an at-risk person on the farm by "touching fences". That is obviously ridiculous. I myself strictly quarantined during the pandemic, but not to the point of not touching things outside. The disease is airborne, it isn't tetanus. My hypothesis is that the real reason the farmers were annoyed was that there were "Southerners" traveling on their land when they they themselves were not permitted to travel. While the Scottish farmers are very different from American farmers in they believe in the seriousness of the pandemic, I think their interpretation of the pandemic is more in terms of a inequality of freedom between them and urbanites. In America, that difference is in farmers hating being told what to do to prevent the pandemic's spread. In Scotland, it seems to be others not listening to what they should do.

Shane Ewing

Live & Learn - Hopefully we can get through this pandemic and you can return to doing this without that obstacle. I enjoyed the series Tom and I look forward to your Geoguessr videos in the future :-)

As soon as you started explaining the remaining obstacles for the next three days at13:28 I had a feeling this would be the final part :/ Nonetheless loved the series & excited for what's next!

Gutted for you both, but I did worry you might be scuppered. Best decision for you I think to abandon the mission, Scotland will welcome you back with open arms when things are safer

Allan McPhail

I'm a bit sad but only because I love these missions so much and would have loved to see more. However, you made the right decision. you don't want to disobey the police publically on camera on youtube haha. What I don't really get though is the covid scare. I too am really careful and don't go anywhere, but you guys didn't plan on making any contact and just crossed the land. Even if you had it, why would that be an issue when you dont leave anything behind and stay in areas that are distanced enough from the main farm. how would a mask and 6 feet distance be "safe" (e.g. when shopping) but this very significantly higher distance be unsafe? if anything he seeked out the danger by approaching you?

Amazing straight line attempt!! And these kind of stories will even stick longer with you then if you do not have such obstacles. Now you can tell your grandchildren about the time you were stopped by police on a mission in the middle of the night !

I am seriously pissed off at how it ended! But in all seriousness, right call made lads even if it was heart-wrenching

Damn! You guys should carry business cards next time! That way they know you’re legit

Incredible video and don't kick yourselves too hard for failing at the mission. According to Gary "Lazarus Lake" Cantrell, the Director of the Barkley Marathons, it's much more rewarding when you do finally complete the challenge if you fail along the way. Still a great story, and the way you made it so far is success on its own! You'll adapt from this and learn lessons from this you can carry forward on future challenges. keep it up!!

Oh my word, how gutted you must have been! I feel so sorry for you. As many others have said though, much respect to you for the decision you made. Can’t wait for the next adventure 😁.

Marte Kjelsberg

Unfortunate result lads, I look forward to the re-attempt. Something to consider perhaps is to not have campfires on unsure land as in the darkness it is a big giveaway. Items like hand warmers could be a substitute for this to stay warm in the winter months (of course not as fun or sustainable), but if those are included within your stash bags - it could be the difference between failure and success. I really enjoyed this one, though and your straight line performance has certainley improved with all of these missions. Good luck for the future gents x

Daniel Alvares

Hi Tom! That’s disappointing. I’m surprised at the farmer doing that. I can’t get my head around why he’d say he doesn’t want to get in the way and he’ll let you stay then leave in the morning so long as you don’t go down to the farmyard if what he really meant was, I’m calling the police. What a strange thing to do. I’m 50/50 on how I feel about that because I would’ve supported him more in his decision if he’d said when he spoke to you that he was calling or had called them already instead of pretending he was cool if he wasn’t, but then again, it’s his land and he can do what he wants - and it was in a lockdown. I wonder if it would’ve made a difference to the police if you’d gone prepared with some sort of printed pass such as the ones the tv and film industry would use that would confirm you are travelling for work. That might’ve helped, I don’t know. Ahhhh, the frustration. That being said, it didn’t make the episodes any less enjoyable. A great watch as always. Please try again, and if you’re thinking of moving the line please come and see us in Galloway, my previous offer still stands. You could do right along the border, Hadrian’s Wall sort of area or slightly higher. They’re called ‘missions’ or ‘straight line attempts’ for a reason. It’s a very difficult thing to try and there’s always a chance it will fail. These things can’t be helped, you just need to keep trying, which we know you will. Brilliant effort guys, well done to both of you. Hold your heads high 😎

Hannah Samuels-Lyons

Absolutely gutted by this, but it will only make your next victorious mission all the more special. Quite sad with how the farmer handled things all together, but I think you made the right decision.

Tyler Wrage

So unfortunate that the cops were called even after speaking with the farmer. I respect the decision to call it though. I'll be eagerly waiting for your next straight line mission! Thank you for the amazing content Tom! Much love from Puerto Rico!

Had you disobeyed the police and carried on, it would have gone from negligence to recklessness, which would have jeopardized your channel. So I guess the lesson is... don't get caught. ;)

Daniel Forssten

oh wow, would love to read it, do you have a link or some keywords to search for?

Daniel Bohrer

almost, it's Qatar :)

Daniel Bohrer

As they say, it's the journey, not the destination.

It’s a flag for the southern South America region (Patagonia). Tom’s planning to tackle that as well as Qatar

May I ask what this new carreer Greg has? I am very intruiged! Also, dear Mr. Farmer: you are a proper cunt. Great episode anyways!

Can't figure out what's the first flag you're teasing. But anyway great job following the line during that mission. Cheers from France

judging the comments i am now worried

beautiful thing to wake up to !

Now I understand why Day 1 was split into two videos

March I think

Alrose

Without spoiling too much: It may be good to avoid campfires in the future, especially so close to people and houses. It may not have made a difference, but it does attract attention and people generally don't want campfires on their land. Better luck next time! All of this is part of the adventure.

That farmer was nice at first but then backstabbed you and called the bizzies when its pitch black, why would he do that?

ChazWalker

The guardian wrote a story about this mission!

What a dick - the farmer could have at least told you to move on if he didn't want you there. Easy to second guess but maybe a fire on visible land isn't the best idea.

What month did this take place in? I remember Tom mentioned in one of his videos a long while back that the Scotland attempt was complete, but don't remember exactly when.

MrVacuumBrainBimbo

Mate, you deserve some some mad respect. Not only for the feat of the line crossing, but the guts it takes to take the right decision here! Mad props! Keep it up!

Peter Marenthyu

Gutted to be honest, but definitely the right call. Class series though mate as always!

Disappointing but I think you made the correct decision. The police gave you a break so it would have been churlish to break your promise. I'd like to see you come back and try the same line again after lockdown. The excitement and adventure levels in that episode were off the scale though, great stuff.

Josette Reynolds

Glad it turned out okay in the end in terms of legal proceedings! We don't watch you to succeed though, it's about the adventure

Awesome content!! The subliminal flags… Bahrain and something else I can’t work out. Either way, sounds good to me!

Hey Tom, Great video! I really enjoy the series. Are there any updates concerning the signed poster? I ordered first day but haven’t heard anything so far.. no worries though.. just wanted to ask! Cheers from Germany

Henrik Duemke

was so looking forward to this as my mate lives in fintry and worked at the farm cafe you were about to cross. unfortunate but great videos still

Tag your spoilers in the comments everybody!

Did you pull an all-nighter or what?

I shouldn't have read the first few comments before watching 😪

Brutality mate. Love how you gave us the farmer spoiler only to double down on it. Absolutely blindsided! Looking forward to the next videos.

Tough call but serious respect for the choice you made. Was a great series all the same, please come back up to Scotland when you can!

Correct decision lads, shame though! Awesome as always!

Bless!

It is very very strange to see you trudging through North Third and beyond. I live in Stirling so have been up there countless times with my mates and walking my dog. I wonder what I was doing the day you filmed this.

Finlay MacDonald

get in! needed this!

Bahrain? Are you mad Tom? Great video once again!

Hi Tom, I just wanted to thank you personally for all the content you have gifted me over the past 2 years. I've been in a really tough place in my life that has left me depressed and suicidal. Your content has helped me get through some of my darkest days and reminds me of why I want to keep going: traveling and exploring the world. Now I'm taking a two week road trip through California with my sister in August. Going through Yosemite National Park, traveling west to San Fransico, and then riding the California coast down to Los Angeles. To say I'm excited would be an understatement. Thank you for reminding me of my love for traveling and adventuring. I'm still struggling, but I'm struggling a little less because of you, Verity, Greg, and Ben. Thank yall for everything. ❤

Sad that you couldn’t finish the mission mate! Definitely the right choice thought I think, you wouldn’t want the unknown of affecting someone’s livelihood or even their well-being hanging over your head! Hopefully 2021 goes better than 2020 and you and Greg can smash this one soon!

Oh well, how would you have known it would end that way :(. Better luck next time!

So sad😢

Alrose

Sad to see it end so early :(

So stressful ah man

Get in!

Viniter

i love you Tom

Haris

Cheers Tom, you legend, Hope to get a pint some day

Niall Walsh

Nice! Time to see what that old Scottish farmer is so pissed off about...

Kane Newall

Dude I literally just checked to see if this was up cause I didn't see the time it was meant to be up. Closed the app after seeing it will be up at 5am my time. Literally instantly I get the notification that it's up! Epic
